Nellie Jean Laird Rowell
(Died October 9, 2011)

A memorial service will be held at a later date for Mrs. Nellie Laird Rowell, age 77 of Lineville formerly of Saraland, Alabama. Mrs. Rowell passed away on Sunday, October 9, 2011 at the Lineville Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Rowell was a native of Bassfield, Mississippi, a former resident of Jackson, Mississippi and Saraland, Alabama. She had lived in Lineville for the past two years. Mrs. Rowell had worked as the Administrative Assistant for the Caduceus Club which was a healthcare facility for Doctors.

She is survived by her son, Mike Rowell (Laura) of Oxford; two grandchildren: Michael Rowell (Stacy) and Nicole Moore (Justin) both of Saraland, Al; two great-grandchildren: Hunter and Jacob Rowell; three brothers: Rev. Grover Laird, Dr. Reggie Laird and Dr. Douglas Laird. Mrs. Rowell was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas James Laird and Lena Broome Laird; one daughter, Susan Belanger; two sisters: Geneva and Gladys; three brothers: Jo Kenneth, Kermit and Aaron.

Evelyn Lorene Daugherty
(Died October 21, 2011)

Funeral services for Mrs. Evelyn Lorene Daugherty, age 87 of Lineville, will be Sunday, October 23, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville with Rev. Harold Pitts, Rev. Zenus Windsor and Rev. Bob Wood officiating. Burial will follow in the Lineville City Cemetery.

Mrs. Daugherty passed away on Friday, October 21, 2011 at the Lineville Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Calhoun County and moved to the Delta Community in 1936. In 1949, Lorene moved to Lineville where she and her husband, Cleman, lived the rest of their lives. She owned and operated the Ideal Beauty Shop in Lineville, retiring in 1979. Lorene was a member of Center West Baptist Church.

Mrs. Daugherty is survived by three daughters: Evelyn McVey and husband Doug of Stockton, MO, Sandra Lett and husband Ronald of Lineville and Elaine Wood and husband Bob of Montgomery; one foster son, Robert Daugherty of Columbus, GA; three brothers: Bradford Smith and wife Mary of Delta, Sanford Smith and wife Joyce of Delta, Edward Smith and wife Betty of Lineville; 10 grandchildren: Randy McVey, Alisa Bough and husband Neal, Kevin McVey and wife Shelli, Chris Lett and wife Geri, Melody Loveless and husband Dale, Robert Wood and wife Christine, Shana Jirik and husband Jason, Anissa Bonosky and husband Alex, Brittany Daugherty and Elizabeth Daugherty plus 21 great-grandchildren, 6 step-great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, and 1 step-great-great-grandchild.

Mrs. Daugherty was preceded in death by her parents: Robert Cleve Smith and Eva Woodard Smith; her husband of 55 years, Cleman Daughtery; one sister, Eulene Buckhannan; five brothers: Shackford, Lenwerd, Winferd, Clifton and Jimmy Smith plus one grandson, David Wood.

Pallbearers will be Neal Bough, Chris Lett, Dale Loveless, Connor McVey, Randy McVey, Johnny Summerlin, L.V. Summerlin and Robert Wood. Grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville on Saturday, October 22, 2011 from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M.

Mattie Elizabeth Sherrer
(Died October 29, 2011)

Funeral services for Ms. Mattie Elizabeth Sherrer, age 85 of Sylacauga, will be Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland with Rev. Charles Stone officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ms. Sherrer passed away on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at the Coosa Valley Medical Center in Sylacauga. A native of Shelby County, she moved to Talladega County in 1944. Ms. Sherrer worked as a waitress at several area restaurants, including the Old Hickory BBQ, the Center Point Restaurant and the “Squeeze In.” She lived in Clay County from 1974 until 2002, when she returned to Talladega County. Ms. Sherrer was of the Holiness faith and served along with her late husband, Henry Clay Sherrer, as an evangelist, traveling throughout the Southeastern United States.

She is survived by one daughter, Edith Williams (Rick) of Sharpsburg, GA; one son, Sammy Roberson (Kathy Gable) of Childersburg; two sisters: Betty J. Roberson (James) and Mary A. Anderson, both of Sylacauga; three grandchildren: Chris Wilson, Shaun Sherrer and Savannah Brooks; two great-grandchildren: Caleb Sherrer and Mikaela Brooks plus her companion, Alvin “Shorty” Culver.

Pallbearers will be Rick Williams, Shaun Sherrer, Chris Wilson, Brandon Gable, Corey Gable and Bobby Carpenter.

The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 from 11:30 A.M. until service time at 2:00 P.M. Flowers will be accepted; however, memorial contributions may be made to The Gideons International, P.O Box 140800, Nashville, TN 37214.

Frances Gladys McKay
(Died November 3, 2011)

Funeral services for Mrs. Frances Gladys McKay, age 90 of Lineville, will be Saturday, November 5, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville with Rev. Claude Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in the Barfield Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. McKay passed away on Thursday, November 03, 2011 at the Clay County Hospital. She was a native of Randolph County, a former resident of Anniston but had lived in Clay County since 1994. Mrs. McKay was a member of Saks Baptist Church.

She is survived by one sister, Myrtrice Baldwin of Woodland; two brothers: Doris Loveless (Mae) of Lineville and Reuben Loveless (Virginia) of Ashland plus several nieces and nephews. Mrs. McKay was preceded in death by her parents, James Henry Loveless and Eva Eleanor Lipham Loveless; her husband of 48 years, Thesley McKay; two children: Billy Glenn McKay and William Harvill McKay; two sisters: Cleone Hart and Caroline Stephens; four brothers: James H. Loveless Jr., Handley H. Loveless, Bobby R. Loveless and an infant brother.

Pallbearers will be Brad Loveless, Bob Kunickis, Brian Baldwin, Bobby Watts, Joey Loveless and Connie Mack Dobbs.

The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville on Saturday, November 5, 2011 from 12:00 P.M. until service time at 2:00 P.M.

Flowers will be accepted; however, memorial contributions may be made to the church or charity of your choice.

Linda Smith
(Died November 3, 2011)

Funeral services for Linda Smith, age 56 of Ashland, will be Sunday, November 6, 2011 at 12:00 Noon at Dingler's Chapel Christian Church with Bro. Jeff Taylor and Bro. David Davis officiating. Burial will follow at the adjoining cemetery.

Ms. Smith passed away on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at the Clay County Hospital. A native of Clay County where she had lived most of her life, she had been employed with Spring Valley Poultry Company and later with Wellborn Cabinet Company. Linda was a member of Covenant Life Church.

Linda is survived by two sisters: Jackie Davis and her husband, James and Rosie Miles both of Ashland; two brothers: William Miles of Oxford and James Miles of Lineville and a step-daughter, Linda Kennedy of Ashland. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alton Richard Miles and Betty Victoria Mitchell Miles and two brothers Jerry Miles and infant Troy Alton Gene Miles.

Pallbearers will be Charles Baker, Steven Miles, Jimmy Miles, Tony Miles, Joe Mullally and Mark Mullally.

The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville on Saturday, November 5, 2011 from 5:30 to 8:00 P.M. and until one hour prior to the service on Sunday. She will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to service time.

Larry McCormick
(Died November 4, 2011)

U.S. Veteran

Funeral services for Mr. Larry W. McCormick, age 62 of Lineville, will be Monday, November 7, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland with Rev. Jerry Colquett, Rev. Dorothy Webster and Rev. Phillip McVey officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the New Harmony Christian Church Cemetery.

Mr. McCormick passed away on Friday, November 4, 2011 at his home. Larry was a native of Randolph County, but lived most of his life in Clay County. He worked at Ace Products for over 35 years, then went on to work for the Clay County Road Department for several years. Mr. McCormick was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and also served in the Alabama National Guard (1208 Quartermaster Group in Lineville). During his service with the Guard, Larry served in Operation Desert Shield-Desert Storm and several other overseas deployments. He was a member of New Harmony Christian Church, the Lineville Masonic Lodge and an honorary member of the Cragford Volunteer Fire Department.

Mr. McCormick is survived by his wife, Patricia McCormick of Lineville; three sons: Terry McCormick (Cindy) of Wadley, Tony McCormick (Tonya) of Lineville and Jonathan McCormick (Jennifer) of Cragford; two step-sons: Tim Tucker of Lineville and Scott Tucker (Deanna) of Ashland; two sisters: Delilah Knopp (Tommy) and Delores Hill both of Ashland; two brothers: E.B. “Bo” McCormick (Delwyn) of Cragford and Charles McCormick of Sharpsburg, GA; two half-sisters: Nell Brown of Gadsden and Thelma Thornton of Rainbow City, AL plus 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mr. McCormick was preceded in death by his parents, John Britton McCormick and Mary Lucille Vinson McCormick and one brother, Quinton McCormick.

Pallbearers will be Cameron Tucker, Creed McCormick, Allon McCormick, Gavin McCormick, Kim Hester and Michael McCormick.

The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland on Sunday, November 6, 2011 from 5:30 to 8:00 P.M. and until service time on Monday.

Walter D. Farr Jr.
(Died November 7, 2011)

Funeral services for Mr. Walter D. Farr, Jr., age 85 of Lineville, will be Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 1:00 P.M. at the Bald Rock Lodge at Cheaha State Park with Dana Chandler and Rev. Zenus Windsor officiating. Burial will follow in the Lineville City Cemetery.

Mr. Farr passed away on Monday, November 7, 2011 at the Clay County Hospital. He was a native and life-long resident of Clay County whose life was rich and expressed the many talents he was gifted with. During the mid-50’s, Walt promoted and played in several bands as vocalist, musician, director and agent. After tiring of life on the road, Mr. Farr began a career as an educator. Graduating from Jacksonville State University and the University of Alabama with his Bachelors and Masters degree in education, Mr. Farr taught at Randolph County High School and Lineville High School and ultimately served as the Dean of Students at Southern Union State Community College.

During the last 30 years of his life, he shared his love and knowledge of the ancient Native American people of our area through his vast collection of artifacts. Walt travelled from school to school, showing and telling the students and all who would listen about the rich heritage of the earliest inhabitants of Clay County. He had served as president of the Clay County Historical Society, the Rebel State Archeological Society and was a member of the 1st United Methodist Church in Lineville.

Mr. Farr is survived by two sons: Mark David Farr of Ashland and Walt Farr (Myra) of Tullahoma, TN; five grandchildren: Jonathan Farr (Jessica), Justin Farr (Maribeth), Ashley Bailey (Ben), Marco Moyers, and Cody Farr; five great-grandchildren plus a number of nephews and other extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter D. Farr Sr. and Hollie Mae Prestridge Farr; his wife of 48 years, Jewell Gaither Farr; one sister, Imogene Farr and one brother, Elton Farr.

Pallbearers will be Ben Bailey, Cody Farr, Jonathan Farr, Justin Farr, Ricky Farr, Tim Farr and Marco Moyers. Jack Morrison will serve as honorary pallbearer.

The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville on Friday, November 11, 2011 from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Mr. Farr will lie in state at the Bald Rock Lodge from 12:00 P.M. to 1:00 P.M.

Albert Norrell
(Died November 10, 2011)

U.S. Veteran

Graveside services with military honors for Mr. Albert Norrell, age 84 of Ashland, will be Sunday, November 13, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at County Line Baptist Church cemetery with Bro. Jim Sims officiating.

Mr. Norrell passed away on Thursday, November 10, 2011 at Russell Medical Center in Alexander City. He was a native of Tallapoosa County but had lived most of his life in Clay County. Mr. Norrell was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. During his basic training, he qualified as a Rifle Marksman and served in the 2nd Airdrone Squadron in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations as a heavy truck driver. Mr. Norell worked for Koch Foods (formerly Tyson Foods) and retired with over 25 years of service.

Mr. Norrell is survived by three daughters: Bonnie Mitchell of Ashland, Betty Ward of Alexander City and Kaye Parker of Franklin, GA; two sons: John Albert Norrell and Johnny Norrell, both of Ashland; eight grandchildren: Kevin Norrell, Tonya Lynn Fuller, Kaye Mitchell, Lisa Mitchell, Debbie Mitchell, Christy Mitchell, E.J. Parker and Brianna Parker plus 13 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Blake Cantone, John Cantone, John Cantone, Daniel Goodroe, James Hall and David Miles.

The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville on Saturday, November 12, 2011 from 5:30 to 8:00 P.M. and until service time on Sunday.
