Diane Marie Ryan

Funeral services for Ms. Diane Marie Ryan, age 53 of Prattville, formerly of Clay County, will be Sunday, April 17, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville with Rev. Ray Milstead officiating. Burial will follow in the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery.
Ms. Ryan passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at the home of her daughter. She was born in Ohio but lived her early years in Clay County. Diane then relocated to Texas, where she worked for Dow Chemical Company for over 15 years as an electrician. In 1986, she returned to Clay County and worked for Wellborn Cabinet Company for over 10 years. Diane loved to work with her hands and enjoyed re-modeling homes as well as horseback riding.
She is survived by two daughters: Amy Phillips (John) of Dadeville and Tiffany Harkins (Jody) of Prattville; one son, Ty Ryan of Ashland; her father, Jim Studdard Sr. of Lineville; three sisters: Connie Thomas of Lineville, Sharon McDowell of South Carolina and Michelle Studdard of Lineville; three brothers: Everette “Bud” Leeper of Ohio, Jim Studdard Jr. of Lineville and Charles Studdard of Texas plus four grandchildren: Christopher, Corey, Kyle and Colton.
Diane was preceded in death by her mother, Shirley J. Teats Studdard; one brother, Roger Leeper and one nephew, J.J. Leeper.
Pallbearers will be Corey Phillips, Chris Phillips, Reginial Lundy, John Heath, Caleb Green and Joe East.
The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville on Saturday, April 16, 2011 from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. and until service time on Sunday.

Funeral Services for Mr. Dewey Bible, age 80, of Duluth, GA will be Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at 11:00 A.M. (CST) at Christiana Baptist Church, Lineville, AL. Burial with military honors to follow in the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Bible passed away Friday, April 16, 2011 at home. A native of Clay County, AL, and long-time resident of Gwinnett County, GA, he worked at General Motors in Doraville, GA and retired in 1963 with 30 years of service. He was an avid vegetable gardener and everyone enjoyed the fruits of his labors from his gardens and fruit trees. His most enjoyable days were spent working on family projects at his six catfish ponds in Lineville, AL. He was also a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Bible is survived by his wife, DeLoice Taylor Bible; son, Huey Bible; daughter, Donna Bible Howe and son-in-law, Chris Howe; grandsons Jonathan Bible, Joseph Bible; granddaughter, Kendra Adams Pendley and grandson-in-law, Tim Pendley; great grandsons, Ryland Pendley, Ron Pendley, Bobby Pendley, Corey Pendley, Marcus Pendley; great granddaughter, Kimothy Pendley, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Bible and Bell Smith Bible; four brothers, Lindsey, Bill, John and Joe Bible; two sisters, Easter Bible, and Francis Bible Phillips.
Pallbearers are Ronnie Waters, Jerry Smith, Benny White, Dale Taylor, Jimmy Higgins, Sam Zeigler, Tommy Adams, and Frankie Phillips.
The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville on April 19, 2011 from 5:30 to 8:00 P.M. (CST) and until one hour prior to the service time. He will lie in state at the church from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. (CST)
Ewart Andrew Speer Jr.

Graveside funeral services with military honors for Mr. Ewart Andrew Speer, Jr., age 75 of Milpitas, CA, will be held at the Ashland City cemetery on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at 1:00 P.M. Mr. Speer died unexpectedly on Saturday, April 9, 2011 in a motor vehicle accident in Mariposa, CA. He was pursuing his hobby of antique cars, touring with a club in his 1931 Model A at the time of the accident.
Ewart graduated in 1954 from Philips High School in Birmingham, AL. and went on to obtain a B.S. in Engineering from Auburn University in 1962. A U.S. Navy veteran, he was a member of the Silicon Valley Model A Restorers Club, where he served on the Board of Directors as Membership Director. Mr. Speer was also a member of the Santa Clara Valley Chapter of the Model A Club of America. Over the past few years, he enjoyed cruising to the Western Caribbean, Mexican Riviera and Alaska.
Mr. Speer is survived by his wife, Cathy; his three children: Ewart Andrew Speer III of West Palm Beach, FL, Lisa Nell Speer of Friendswood, TX and Edward Dean Speer of Acworth, GA; his sister, Anne Gregg of Youngstown, OH plus three grandchildren: Amanda Kirksey Speer, Garrett Kirksey Howard and Samuel Edward Speer.
The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland on Saturday, April 23, 2011 from 11:30 A.M. until 12:30 P.M.

Mary Magdaline Hales

Mary Williams Kimbrough Hales was born June 27, 1938 and passed away on April 23, 2011. She is survived by her husband, Cliff Hales; daughter, Terry Stringer; son, Leslie Kimbrough; grandkids: Andrea, Daniel (Jefiner) and Jackson plus great-grandkids: Lane, Olivia and Addie. She was preceded in death by one son, Gene M. Kimbrough.
She was a devoted wife, loving mother and best friend to all, our “Melie.”
Mary’s hobbies were shopping for clothes and the perfect pair of shoes. She loved to feed the birds, watch the deer and snuggle with her canine companions. Most of all, she loved to fish.
Mary had a heart of gold, a generous soul and loved us all with a passion. Her shoulder was always there and she always knew the right thing to say and do. She was always looking for a way to brighten someone’s day. She was the sunshine of our lives.
She didn’t want to be mourned but for us all to celebrate her life and to remember the “good times.” In lieu of flowers, she asked that you go and do something special with a loved one in memory of her.
A memorial celebration will be announced at a later date.
Larry Paul "L.P." Jones

Funeral services for Mr. Larry Paul “L.P.” Jones, age 66 of Lineville, will be Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at the Liberty Grove Congregational Methodist Church with Rev. Greg Norred and Rev. Harold Pitts officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Jones passed away on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at his home. A Pensacola, Florida native, L.P. was a former resident of Texas and had lived in the Barfield area in Clay County for over 30 years. He moved to Randolph County in 1994. Mr. Jones retired from the Anniston Army Depot after 30 plus years of service where he worked as a mechanic, repairing and rebuilding heavy equipment such as the M1A1 Abrams Battle Tank. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and had served with the 24th Infantry Division in Germany. He was a member of Fairview Congregational Methodist Church but had been attending Liberty Grove Congregational Methodist Church. L.P. loved to garden and see things grow, he loved to work in his workshop and he loved life. But his greatest love was for his family, his children and his grandchildren.
Mr. Jones is survived by his wife, Kay Hewett Jones of Lineville; three sons: Douglas Paul Jones (Ellen) of Dauphin Island, Al; Larry Clint Jones (Jenean) of Lineville and Don E. Strickland (April) of Easley, SC; three sisters: Ruth Windsor (Bruce) of Lineville; Linda Watson of Pell City and Faye Cleckler (Dan) of Anniston; three brothers: Rev. Bobby Jones (Mildred), Ken Jones and Donnie Jones, all of Lineville; sister-in-law, Joan Pelletier of Greenville, SC; brother-in-law, Allen Hewett (Deb) of Oxford plus seven grandchildren: Shelton Jones, Will Jones, Andrew Adamson, Kaley McCain, Dakota Jones, Kayla Strickland and Haylee Strickland.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Paul Silas Jones and Lois Pitts Jones and a nephew, Michael Watson.
Pallbearers will be Shelton Jones, Johnathan Watson, Jeremy Character, Jeff Waters, Tim Jones and Donald Jones. Honorary Pallbearers will be Brent Watson and Vick Tankersley.
The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 from 5:00 to 8:00 and until one hour prior to the service time on Wednesday. He will lie in state at the church for one hour.

Robert Floyd Joiner

Funeral services for Mr. Robert Floyd Joiner, age 81 of Goodwater, will be Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland with Bro. Edward Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the Parkdale Methodist Church cemetery in Goodwater.
Mr. Joiner passed away on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at the NHC Health Care Facility in Anniston. He was born in Sylacauga but had lived most of his life in the Goodwater area, had worked for several years at Southern Casket Company, Sterling Lumber Company, and FMP Casket Company. Mr. Joiner loved to work in his gardens and was a Methodist by faith.
Mr. Joiner is survived by his wife, Edra Vickers Joiner of Goodwater; one daughter, Anita Naomi Parish of Anniston; one brother, Eddie Joiner (Ellen) of Alexander City; son-in-law, Michael George Parish of Anniston; two grandchildren: Samantha Michelle and Nicholas Ryan Parish plus several nieces, nephews and other extended family members.
Pallbearers will be Michael Parish, Nicholas Parish, Brandon Parish, Damon Vickers, Dewey Tate and Kevin Bishop.

Wallace S. Horn

Funeral services for Mr. Wallace S. Horn, age 91 of Talladega, will be Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland with Bro. Gerald Hoyle officiating. Burial with Masonic graveside rites to follow in the Millerville Community Cemetery.
Mr. Horn passed away on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at his home. He was a native and lifelong resident of Clay County and a longtime member and deacon of Hatchet Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Horn worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1936 to 1937, retired after 38 years of service at Bemis Co. as a machinist, mechanic and department head. After his retirement he worked for several years as a security guard for the Clay County Hospital and Russell Manufacturing. Mr. Horn was also a member of the Talladega Masonic Lodge # 261 F & AM.
He is survived by one daughter, Kathy Carr of Millerville; two sons: Stanley Horn (Diana) of Ashville and Dr. Tim Horn of West Palm Beach, FL, three grandchildren: Clara-Leigh Evans (Oscar) of Idaho, Traci Morrow Braden (Jimmy) of Lincoln, and Bryan Carr of Enterprise, four great-grandchildren: Ashleigh Evans, Ainslee Evans, Garrett Evans and Madeline Morrow, two sisters; Mae Davis of Ashland and Betty Mayall (Harlon D.) of Lineville. Mr. Horn was preceded in death by his parents: James Elam Horn and Minnie Mae Johnson Horn, his wife of 63 years, Flossie P. Horn, son-in-law Roy Carr, five brothers; Ancil Horn, James Horn, Bram Horn, Lewis Horn, and Max Horn, two sisters; Helen Denson and Melba Jean Pritchard.
Pallbearers will be Bob Horn, Clark Patterson, Ray Camp, Jimmy Braden, Raymond Horne and Bryan Carr.

Sarah Robertson Smith

Graveside funeral services for Mrs. Sarah Robertson Smith, age 89 of Cragford, will be held Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 4:00 P.M. at the Bethel Baptist Church (South) cemetery with Rev. Fred Fuller officiating .
Mrs. Smith passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2011 at the Chapman Nursing Facility in Alexander City. An Alexander City native, Sarah spent her early years in Clay County, then moved to the Atlanta area where she resided with her husband, Cecil Smith. There Mrs. Smith was a homemaker but also worked as a beautician, operating out of a shop in her home. Upon Cecil’s retirement in 1975, they returned to Clay County.
Mrs. Smith is survived by one son, James C. Smith of Cragford; one brother, Robert Robertson of Las Vegas, Nevada; two grandchildren: Kenneth and Terri, three great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild plus two nieces: Jilla and Norma Jean. She was preceded in death by her parents: Homer Robertson and Dettie Smith Robertson; her husband, Cecil Smith; two daughters: Rebecca Thomason and Linda Faye Smith.

Mary Lucille Cook

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Lucille Cook, age 87 of Lineville, will be Monday, May 2, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at the Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville with Rev. David Holcombe officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Christiana Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Cook passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2011 at the Clay County Hospital. A Clay County native, Mary was born on November 1, 1922, the daughter of Harlem and Volley Hawkins East. Both parents were teachers and her father was also a preacher. She moved to South Carolina at the age of 14 and graduated from Greenville College with a degree in Mathematics. Mary enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and participated in the development of bombsights at Dahlgren, Virginia. Later she transferred to Patuxent River, Maryland where she taught naval aviators how to navigate and pilot their aircraft. Mary was also the first female promoted to Chief Petty Officer in competition against all other Navy personnel in her specialty.
While in the Navy, Mary met and married
a sailor, William B. “Bill” Cook, who would be her husband for 54 years. Mary continued to serve in the Navy for a total of 12 years during World War II and the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1954. After Bill retired from the Navy, he and Mary returned to Clay County, where they worked together running their egg farm for over 20 years. Mary also played Bridge all of her life and was a long-time member of the Anniston Bridge Club. She was a certified instructor of the American Contract Bridge League and had won enough Bridge tournaments to earn the ranking of “Life Master” in 2001.
Mrs. Cook is survived by her daughter, Sandra Cook of Lineville; her son, William B. Cook Jr. (Arlene) and her grandson, James William Cook, all of Columbus, GA. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and an infant brother.
Pallbearers will be Larry Bishop, Leroy Dempsey, David East, Gene East, David Holcombe and Cecil Smith. Honorary Pallbearers will be Staff of the Clay County Hospital Outpatient Department and the Nursing Service Department.
The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville on Sunday, May 1, 2011 from 5:00 to 8:00 and until service time Monday morning.
