They met in the tenth grade and were high school sweethearts. They wed in October 1939. Clifford and Estelle Smith were baptized by Joe S. Hyde in October 1945. Clifford began teaching at the Jacksonville Church of Christ and leading singing. At the age of 37 Clifford began preaching for the Ironaton Church of Christ near Talladega. Clifford worked over 22 years on Fort McClellan as supervisor and U.S. Government employee before retiring to preach in full-time gospel preaching. Clifford left Ironaton to become the full time preacher for the Arab Church of Christ in Arab. Clifford was 42 years of age and spent four productive years with this good church. In 1966, Clifford moved near Decatur to preach for the Priceville Church of Christ for ten months. In late October of 1966, Clifford moved to Cedartown, Georgia to work with the Cedartown Church of Christ as their minister. Clifford viewed the "Cedartown Years" as some of his happiest and most productive. In Cedartown, Clifford preached via daily radio and promoted gospel singing by teaching "Singing Schools" and conducting an area-wide Gospel Singing every month with five Sundays. These "5th Sunday" Singings were a tradition that lasted well over 30 years.

In October of 1974 Clifford accepted the call to preach for the Elba Church of Christ in Elba. After two years of fruitful work Clifford moved to Walker County, Alabama to preach for the Cordova Church of Christ. 1976 and 1977 were delightful years working within close proximity to his younger brother, Bobby Duncan, who was the preacher for the 6th Avenue Church of Christ in Jasper. In 1978, Clifford moved to Selma to work with the Highland Avenue Church of Christ. His son Ed Smith was the preacher at Highland and Clifford accepted an associate position to encourage good singing and to promote evangelism. These were particularly happy years as he worked closely with his minister-son in the local work of the Highland Church of Christ. In 1980 Clifford moved to Columbus, Georgia to preach for the Warm Springs Road Church of Christ. Over the next six years Clifford worked with two other area congregations, namely, the Northside Church of Christ and the Edgewood Church of Christ. During these years he traveled thousands of miles to promote evangelism by means of television and radio. The SEEDSOWING program he supported was by the late Paul Kidwell Sr. The SEEDSOWING archives are still being aired on the Gospel Broadcasting Network via satellite and Internet streaming and this good work continues in 2008.

In 1986, Clifford moved back to Selma to begin his second tour of duty with the Highland Church of Christ. He also worked with the Selmont Church of Christ. In 1990 Clifford accepted another pulpit position with the Antioch Church of Christ in Snead. From 1990 to 1994 Clifford preached and lived in Altoona near Snead Crossroads. In 1994 until 2004, Clifford and Estelle lived in Anniston. During these years they worked with the Ohatchee Church of Christ and the Jacksonville Church of Christ. In 2004 Clifford and Estelle moved to Harding Place near the campus of Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas. For the last four years of his life he worked, loved and served with fellow retired preachers and teachers. He became known in Arkansas as the "singing preacher" much like he had always been known in Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, and Georgia. Clifford did some preaching in Texas in Gospel Meetings. Always a lover of souls and a promoter and supporter of good works, this "singing-preacher" lived to serve the Lord Jesus Christ. He loved God, his family, and his fellow men. Clifford and Estelle were married almost 69 years. Clifford departed this life Friday, August 15, 2008 at the age of 89. Gray Brown-Service Mortuary in charge of arrangements. (256) 236-3441
