HOPPER
03-09-2006

Graveside services for Janice Hopper, 69, of Gadsden were at 2 p.m. March 3 at Crestwood Cemetery. Pastor Randy Gunter officiated. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services directed.

Mrs. Hopper died Feb. 28.

Survivors include her husband, Jack Hopper, retired vice president for Institutional Advance-ement at Jacksonville State University and currently part-time special assistant to JSU president Dr. William Meehan; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Mike and Kelly Hopper of Birmingham and Mark Hopper of Huntsville; three grandchildren, Morgan, David and Tyler Hopper, a brother, Billy Biddle of Fort Payne; a niece, Tammy Grover, and a nephew, Greg Biddle.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Eva Biddle, and a sister-in-law, Julia Biddle.

Pallbearers were Greg Biddle, Vance Grover, Lee Roberts, Dee Grimes, Mark Weaver, David Dowling, and Bruce, Johnny and Glenn Leslie.

Mrs. Hopper was a native and lifelong resident of Etowah County. She was a member of Meadowbrook Baptist Church, where she volunteered in the church office. She was a former secretary at Jacksonville State University on the Gadsden campus.

Memorial donations may be made to Meadowbrook Baptist Church or the Hopper Scholarship Fund at Jacksonville State University.

PENNY
03-09-2006

Services for William Olan Penny, 77, of Nances Creek were at 11 a.m. March 4 in the chapel of Folsom Funeral Home with Revs. Floyd Willis and Orville Smith officiating. Burial was in Nance’s Creek Cemetery.

Mr. Penny died March 2 at Gadsden Regional Medical Center after a short illness.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Olene Doss Penny; a daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and David Amberson of Nances Creek; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Keith Penny and Terry and Caroline Penny of Nances Creek; grandchildren, Penny and Elisha Conn, Justin Amberson, and Emma Shane Penny; a great-grandchild, Laney Conn; a step sister and her husband, Joyce and Jackie King; and a step brother and his wife, Bobby and Cathy Patterson.

Mr. Penny was preceded in death by his parents, Kinnebrew and Nell Needham Penny; his step mother, Gladys Penny; a daughter, Wilma Karen Penny; a sister, Mary Jane Jackson; a niece, Debbie Jackson; two step brothers, Tommy Patterson and Billy Patterson.

Pallbearers were Rodney and Jason Jackson, Darwin, Brian, and Barry Jones, and Douglas, Roger, Gary and Kevin Smith. Anniston Concrete and Asphalt employees were honorary pallbearers.

Mr. Penny was born Feb. 28, 1929. He was a member of Nance’s Creek Baptist Church and was a veteran of the United States Army where he was a staff sergeant. Prior to his retirement, he owned and operated Anniston Concrete and Asphalt for 40 years. Shortly before his death, he drove a bulldozer and did other work at Anniston Concrete and Asphalt on a regular basis. He enjoyed gardening and buckdancing.

Memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity.

TAYLOR
03-09-2006

Services for Medgar “Joe” Taylor, 42, off Bir-mingham, formerly of Jacksonville, were at noon March 2 at Brunna Val-ley Baptist Church in Lincoln with Rev. Robert Gaddis Jr., officiating. Burial was in Eden Hills cemetery in Anniston. Anniston Funeral Services directed.

Mr. Taylor died Feb. 23 in Birmingham.

Survivors include two sons, Joe Medgar Taylor and Gaderick Taylor of Mobile; four brothers, David Nicholson of Chicago, Melvin Taylor of Gadsden and Shaun Taylor and Richard Wilson of Jacksonville; eight sisters and brothers-in-law, Wanda Nicholson and Theresa Taylor of Chicago, Felecia Taylor (Hines) Ware, Crystal Wilson, Jessica Wilson and Dorothy Taylor Wilson of Jacksonville, Cheryl and Gary Holcomb of Mobile, and Doris and Joe Overstreet of Prichard; his mother Dorothy Taylor Wilson of Jacksonville and a special friend, Dorothy Overstreet.

He was preceded in death by his father, Franklin Lee Taylor.

Pallbearers were friends of the family.

Mr. Taylor was a Chicago native and attended Camden High School and Mt. Gilead Baptist Church in Camden. He had been employed by a construction company in Montgomery.

WILSON
03-09-2006

Services for Josephine Idell Hudgins Wilson, 85, will be at 2 p.m. March 8 in the chapel of K. L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Rev Albert Freeman officiating. K.L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center will direct. Burial will be in the city cemetery.

Mrs. Wilson died March 4 at Jacksonville Medical Center.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas E. and Sue Wilson of Jacksonville; two grandchildren, Gary Wilson and Wendy Wilson Minks; five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Henry B. Wilson; a son, James H. Wilson; and four brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.

Pallbearers will be Anthony Bennett, Brandon Willis, Clarence Hudgins, Barry Hudgins, James Hollis, Jeff Landers, Melvin Hudgins and Terry Wayne Hudgins.

Mrs. Wilson was a Blount County native and had resided in Calhoun County most of her life. She was retired from housekeeping at Jacksonville State University.

ARMSTRONG

Jacksonville — Celeste Elizabeth Rush Armstrong, formerly of Mobile, died Friday, May 12, 2006 at The Meadows Assisted Living Facility in Jacksonville, Alabama. She was 96 years old and had lived in Jacksonville for the past 7 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oyer Armstrong. Mrs. Armstrong was a member of the first graduating class of Murphy High School in 1927. Her parents were Arthur and Sarah Rush. She was a member of Jacksonville First United Methodist Church, the Bonnie Blue Flag Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Mobile Woman's Club, the Fowl River Garden Club, and the Springhill Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was formerly a member of Kingswood Methodist Church in Mobile.

Mrs. Armstrong is survived by her son, Dr. Richard Armstrong and his wife, Diane, of Jacksonville; one sister Kathleen McDonald, of Mobile; three grandsons, Richard, Ross (Susan), and David (Jessica) Armstrong; and great-grandchildren, Laura, Ross, Harrison, Hayden, Harper, and Haley Armstrong. Visitation for Mrs. Armstrong will begin today at noon at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Jacksonville, with the funeral service beginning at 2 p.m. A graveside service will then be at in Magnolia cemetery in Mobile on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the National Parkinson Foundation, Inc. c/o Mary Ann Sprinkle, Director of Development, 1501 NW 9th Avenue, Bob Hope Road, Miami, Florida 33136-1494.

Anniston — Funeral services for Mary A. Babbs, 83, of Anniston, Ala., will be announced by Anniston Funeral Services. Mrs. Babbs died Sunday, May 14, 2006 at Regional Medical Center.

BOYD

Talladega — Funeral services for Mr. Kirby Ray Boyd, 66, of Talladega, Ala., will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday from Benefield Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be today from 5 to 8 p.m.

MARTIN

Anniston — Funeral services for Ellen "Granny" Martin, 82, of Anniston, Ala., will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Chapel Hill Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Holcomb officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Methodist cemetery in Ohatchee. Chapel Hill Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 this evening at the funeral home. Mrs. Martin died Saturday, May 13, 2006 at Jacksonville Health & Rehab.

Survivors include three sisters, Jimmie Faye Johnson, of Anniston, Ruby Harris, of Tyler, Texas, and Cloe Harper, of Orlando, Fla.; brother, Bobby Champion, of Anniston; seven grandchildren, Angie Huckeba, Deanna Baldwin, Blake Rockmart, Billy Rockmart, Bonnie Grimes, Pam Hoover and Denise Hoover; six great-grandchildren, Dawn Murray, Daisy Adams, Cody Huckeba, T.J. Kelley, Charles Rockmart, and Reggie Moore; three great-great-grandchildren, Tyler Murray, Alex Murray, and Chance Adams.

Pallbearers will be Blake Rockmart, John Murray, Danny Baldwin, Art Jennings, Robby Champion, Michael Stellos, Russell Davis, and Mickey Luckado. Mrs. Martin was a native and life long resident of Calhoun County and a member of Norwood Baptist Church. Special thanks to Jacksonville Rehab Center, Comfort Care Hospice and Darrin Wells. Chapel Hill Funeral Home will be servicing the Martin family. 820-5151

Hobson City — Funeral services for Katie "Vicky" Rowe, 55, of Hobson City, Ala., will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at New Hope Baptist Church in Hobson City with the Rev. Judge Stringer officiating. Burial will be in Jennifer cemetery in Munford with Anniston Funeral Services in charge. The body will be at the church one hour prior to the service. Mrs. Rowe died Thursday, May 11, 2006 at Regional Medical Center in Anniston.

Survivors include one son, Tracy Cunningham Rowe, Hobson City; two sisters, Kathy Allen, Eastaboga, and Mary Fields, Hobson City; two brothers, Jimmy Cunningham, Atlanta, Ga., and Jerry Cunningham, of Eastaboga; mother, Gladys Cunningham, also of Eastaboga.

Pallbearers will be friends of the family. Mrs. Rowe was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

Oxford — Funeral services for Mr. Thomas Earl Swancey, 77, of Oxford, Ala., will be announced by Miller Funeral Home. Mr. Swancey died Sunday, May 14, 2006 at his residence.

WATSON

Anniston — Memorial services for Donald Edward “Eddie” Watson, 52 of Anniston will be Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at 5:30 p.m. at Ohatchee Church of Christ. Mr. Watson passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2006 at his home. He is survived by two daughters, Melinda Holcomb and Christy Howell, both of Anniston; one sister, Lisa Bramlett, of Piedmont; two brothers, George Bramlett and David Scott Bramlett, both of Anniston; his father, David Bramlett, of Anniston; 5 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Watson was preceded in death by his mother, Jackie Bramlett. Special thanks are extended to the employees of Coosa Valley Youth Services, Triplett Paint & Decorating and Miller Funeral Home.

Jacksonville — Funeral services for Jewell Phillips, 89, will be 1 p.m. today Anniston Memorial Funeral Home. Mrs. Phillips is also survived by her grandson, Chad McGinnis and his wife, Melissa.

Anniston — Services for Mrs. Mary A. Babbs, age 83, of Anniston, Ala., will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2006 at Anniston Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Sammy Fears, officiating. Burial will be in Eden Hills cemetery in Anniston with Anniston Funeral Services in charge. The body will be at the chapel until time of service. Mrs. Babbs passed away on Sunday, May 14, 2006 at Regional Medical Center in Anniston.

Survivors include; one brother, Louis Jemison, of Talladega; a special niece and caregiver, Delois Coleman, of Oxford; niece, Virgina Price Ogumondede, of Anniston; special adopted nieces, Jacques (Elbert) Moore, of Weaver, Jacquelyn (Timothy) Flowers, of Anniston and Sandra (Jerry) Whatley, of Anniston, and a special cousin, Laura Groce, of Talladega.

Mrs. Babbs was a native most of her life and was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas "Bear" Babbs. The family will accept flowers.
