HAYNIE
ALEXANDRIA — Mr. Charles L. Haynie, 85, celebrated his birthday, August 22, 2008 in heaven. He was born in Clay County. Funeral service will be Sunday, August 24, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Chapel Hill Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Scott Whetstone and the Rev. Frank Haynie officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home. Mr. Haynie passed away at his residence Friday, August 22, 2008. Mr. Haynie is survived by his wife, Marguerite Rickerson Haynie, of Alexandria; daughter, Wanda Kay Hall and husband Mike, of Alexandria; son, Charles Wayne Haynie and wife Reba, of Birmingham; sisters, Nell Brewer, of Centre and Ruth Thomason, of Oxford; brother Horace Erwin, of Eason Hill, Ga. He was blessed with three grandchildren, Michael Waynie Hall, Daniel Hall and Tiffany Haynie; three great-grand-children and several nieces and nephews. He was also survived by six step-children, 19 step-grandchildren and 21 step-great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Haynie.
Pallbearers will be Larry Morgan, Danny Price, Ray Curvin, Daniel Hall, Mike Hall and Charles Skinner. Honorary pallbearers will be Travis Gokey, Trent Gokey, Ralph Hurst and Dan Hammonds. Mr. Haynie retired from Lee Brass with 46 years and a Security Guard with Weiser Security since 1990. He was a bi-vocational minister and pastored several churches in Calhoun, Cleburne and Clay Counties. He was an active member of Gladeview Baptist Church. LINEVILLE — Funeral service for Mr. Charles Anthony Jones, 39, of Lineville will be 3 p.m. Sunday, August 24, 2008 at Anniston Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Donovan Thomas and Bishop Johnny Sandlin officiating. Burial will be in the Lineville Community cemetery in Lineville with Anniston Funeral services in charge. The body will lie in state from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. at Springhill Baptist Church in Lineville. Mr. Jones died on Monday, August 18, in Carrollton, Ga.

KING
OXFORD — Betty Ellen Peebles King, a longtime resident of Oxford, died in Birmingham, on August 22, 2008 following a brief illness. A native of Aliceville, Pickens County, Ala., Mrs. King was born on October 17, 1921 to William Battle and Gertrude Meroney Peebles. She was the class valedictorian of Aliceville High School's Class of 1939 and graduated from the University of Montevallo (formerly Alabama College) with a Bachelor of Science degree in business and education in 1943. She taught briefly at the high schools of Opp and Oxford, Ala. and worked as a Secretary/Bookkeeper at the U.S.O. office in Childersburg, Ala. For many years following, she was employed as a Bookkeeper-Office Manager at the Reynolds Insurance Agency (later Dorman-Reynolds Agency) in Anniston, Ala. She was a member of the McCoy Memorial United Methodist Church in Anniston, where she formerly served as a Sunday School teacher and held numerous leadership positions and was an Honorary Life Member of the Administrative Council. She was also an affiliate member of the First United Methodist Church of Aliceville, where she received the sacrament of baptism in 1931. An avid amateur genealogist, she compiled histories of all her related families and enjoyed assisting others in similar pursuits. In 2004, she contributed a sizeable portion of her research collection to the Alabama Room of the Anniston-Calhoun County Public Library. Mrs. King is survived by her daughter, Betty Ellen King Wilkerson; grandson, David Wayne Hodnett; granddaughter, Aimee Hodnett Birchfield and her husband, Charles Eugene Birchfield; great-granddaughters, Meagan Brianne and Amber Claire Birchfield, all of Oxford, Ala.; brother, William Battle Peebles, Jr. and his wife, Sara Wood Peebles, of Aliceville, Ala.; cousins, Frank Darrow Peebles, Jr., of Decatur, Ala. and Mary Louise Wofford Morris, of Cartersville, Ga.; and several nieces and their families. She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty years, Harris Newton King, a lifelong resident of Calhoun County, Ala. The family gratefully acknowledges the loving support provided by caregivers Thelma Hoffler, Sandy McCall, Clara Batchelor and Eula Doss. A graveside service will be at Franconia-Oak Grove cemetery in Aliceville, Ala. on Sunday, August 24, 2008 at 2 p.m. with Skelton Funeral Home of Reform Directing. ALEXANDER CITY — Funeral service for Mrs. Nettie Gay McLendon, age, 89, of Alexander City, will be Sunday, August 24, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Radney Funeral Home with the Rev. Mrs. McLendon passed away on Thursday, August 21, 2008 at Russell Medical Center. She was born on June 30, 1919 in Clay County to John Oats Luker and Vonnie Williams Luker. She was a member of Hillabee Baptist Church. She went to work at Russell Corporation in 1946 and retired in 1984 as a line waitress and then she was a homemaker. She loved to work outside in her yard and tend to her flowers. She enjoyed sewing, cooking and canning. She is survived by her daughters, Janice Vickers and her husband, William and Faye M. Jones and husband, Donnie, all of New Site; grandchildren, Tammy Bruce and husband, Todd, Brent Vickers and wife, Carla and Bryan Vickers and wife, Brandy, all of New Site; great- grandchildren, Erin Vickers, Ivy Vickers, Gavyn Vickers and Cody Bruce, all of New Site; brother, Paschal Luker and wife Joyce of Lineville; and sisters, Jo Craven and husband, Thirl and Frances Woodruff and husband, Melvin, all of Lineville. RABITTOWN — Miss Marilyn Elizabeth Wheeler, 77, died early Friday, August 22, 2008, at Piedmont Health Care Center. Miss Wheeler was born on December 5, 1930, the daughter of the late Homer Deloach and Eunice Morgan Wheeler. Prior to her retirement, Miss Wheeler was a school teacher at the Ranburne High School. She was a member of the Chosea Springs Baptist Church.
Survivors include her sister-in-law, Mrs. Sara Wheeler, of Piedmont; nieces, Nancy Griffin, Debbie Dutkanych and Betty Stephens; nephews, Andy Dutkanych and David Wheeler; one sister, Josephine Dutkanych.

OXFORD — Funeral services for Charles E. Kelley, 58 of Oxford, will be 2 p.m. today at Concord Baptist Church in Cleburne County with the Rev. Randall Moore and the Rev. Lewis Roszell officiating. She briefly attended Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville Ala. and Fayetteville State in Fayetteville, N.C. And worked briefly as an Accountant.

Mr. Woodall went to be with the Lord Friday, August 22, 2008 at his home in Jacksonville. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Geraldine Smith Woodall; two brothers, Gary (Wanda) Woodall, of Wellington; Ricky (Bekki) Woodall, of Oxford; and 11 nieces and six nephews; Alicia Austin, niece and Al Coone, nephew, were especially fortunate to have shared a special closeness with their "Uncle Tommy." He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl L. Woodall and Ruby McFall Woodall.

Tommy was born March 25, 1945 in Anniston, graduated from Jacksonville High School and was a life-long resident of Jacksonville. He co-owned Armstrong Florist in Jacksonville with his wife, Geraldine. He was employed with Anniston Army Depot for 26 years, was a Vietnam Veteran, and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. Tommy will be remembered for his gentle spirit and his love of Alabama Football, but more importantly for his role as a loving husband, brother, uncle and brother-in-law.

She was a native of Randolph County, but had lived most of her in life in Clay County, retired from Higgins Manufacturing Company and was a Caretaker. She is survived by one daughter, Lisa Hanner (Mike), of Shelby, Ala.; four sons, Bobby Adamson (Cathy) and Jimmy Adamson (Jelima), of Lineville, Curtis Adamson (Sarah), of Ashland, Roy Adamson (Donna), of Lineville; five sisters, Ozeal Smith and Margaret Turner, of Heflin, Reba Horn (James), of Lineville, Dot Carmack (Ish), of Talladega, Annie Latham (Edward), of Lineville; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harlis C. Adamson.

Tuskegee Airman dies in Va.

RICHMOND, Va. — Lieutenant Colonel Howard Lee Baugh, one of the original Tuskegee Airmen, has died.
Baugh died Saturday at a suburban Richmond hospital after a brief illness. He was 88.
The Prince George County resident enlisted in the Army in 1942 and joined the all-black fighter group that trained at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.
Baugh flew 135 combat missions as part of the 332nd Fighter Group's 99th Fighter Squadron in Sicily, Italy, during World War II. During his career, he won the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. In 2004, he was awarded the French Legion of Honor.
A funeral is scheduled for September 4 in Petersburg. Burial will be later in Arlington National Cemetery.
