JULIETTE ALLIE POWE

SYLACAUGA — A Celebration of Life for Juliette Allie (Judy) Powe, 86, will be Friday at 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jim Stanford officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Miss Powe died July 30 at Sylacauga Health Care Center. Lovingly known as "Judy," she was born at the Powe farm on Fayetteville Road Aug. 27, 1916. She traveled with her civil engineer father, Frank Houston Powe, and her mother, Ellen Davis Powe, as he paved roads all over Alabama during her early childhood. She graduated from high school in Sylacauga in 1933, and then attended Flora McDonald College, a fine Presbyterian girls' school in Red Springs, N.C., in the depths of the Depression.

She graduated in 1937 and taught school in Childersburg during 1943-44. She taught in a private school in Middleburg, Va., in 1945, and from there, she joined the Navy.

After leaving the Navy, Judy came home to the farm for the rest of her sweet life. She died after a short illness.

She is survived by a sister, Frances C. Powe of Sylacauga; nephew, Roscoe D. McMillan of Flowery Branch, Ga.; and niece, Anne McMillan Monroe of Lumberton, N.C.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church in Judy's memory.

Curtis and Son Funeral Home North Chapel will direct the service.

BABERON GRANT BURROUGHS

ALEXANDER CITY — Graveside service for Baberon Grant (B.G.) Burroughs, 83, will be Friday at 11 a.m. in Pine Hill Memorial Park in Talladega with the Rev. Doug Hemphill and the Rev. Garland Gamble officiating.

Mr. Burroughs died July 30 in Alexander City. He was a native of Clay County, lived in Talladega for 15 years and lived in Alexander City for the past 38 years. He retired from South Central Bell in 1979, where he was a supervisor. He was a veteran of World War II and was a member of First Methodist Church of Alexander City.

He is survived by his wife, Julia B. Burroughs of Alexander City; daughters, Patricia B. Moffett Butler of Palos Verdes, Calif., and Katherine B. Brown of Atlanta, Ga.; sister, Sarah Burroughs of Ashland; brother, Joseph H. Burroughs Jr.; and three grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Steve Brown, Bill Edwards, Rusty Burroughs, Ricky Burroughs, Don Burroughs and Dave Burroughs.

Usrey Funeral Home will direct the service.

LAURIE EUGENIA DUNLAP

CHILDERSBURG — Funeral service for Laurie Eugenia Dunlap, 89, will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Curtis and Son Funeral Home Childersburg chapel. Burial will be in Greenhill Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Dunlap died July 27 at her residence. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph McDonald Dunlap, and a grandson, Sean Dunlap. She had been a resident of Childersburg since 1940. She was remembered for her love of gardening and she took great pleasure in sharing this love with anyone who ventured into her garden.

She is survived by daughters, Debbie Dunlap (Ben Early) of Pensacola, Fla., and Diane Herndon (Jimmy) of Pahrump, Nev.; sons, Dale Dunlap (Karen) of New Orleans, La., David Dunlap (Sharron) of Childersburg and Donald Dunlap (Alice) of Irondale; grandchildren, Russell Dunlap, Dana Boyd and husband Jimmy, Shea Brooks and husband Darrell, Ray Herndon and wife Lisa, Daniel Herndon, Jacob Herndon and Devan Dunlap; and great-grandchildren, Barcley Boyd, Bailey Boyd, Leta RaeAnn Herndon, Lloyd James Herndon, Jack Poland, Jack Allebach and Ben Early III.

Pallbearers will be Daniel Herndon, Russell Dunlap, Darrell Brooks, Jimmy Butts, Paul Ray and Pat Ray.

Honorary pallbearers will be Daniel Herndon, Ray Herndon, Bubba Cleckler, Ronnie Matheson, Jimmy Payne and Jimmy Lake.

Curtis and Son Funeral Home Childersburg Chapel will direct the service.

FRANKIE POWELL GARRETT

CHILDERSBURG — Frankie Powell Garrett, 61, died July 30.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Community Funeral Home.

ROBERT RAY NEAL

MUNFORD — Graveside service for Robert Ray Neal, 64, was Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Hillcrest Cemetery in Munford.

Mr. Neal died July 28.

He is survived by his wife, Maudia Neal of Munford; and two daughters, Rachel Bice of Jemison and Shannon Neal of Mt. Burg, Ark.

Talladega Funeral Home directed the service.

FLORA ELIZABETH NEWSOME

PELL CITY — Funeral service for Flora Elizabeth Newsome, 78, will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Kilgroe Funeral Home chapel in Pell City with the Rev. Corbie Isbell officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Newsome died July 29. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernice A. Newsome. She was a resident of Pell City for the past 42 years. As a child she was baptized at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, where she has remained a member. She was a loving mother and grandmother to her family and was loved by all.

She is survived by daughters, Linda Isbell and Deborah Boyd of Pell City; sons, Roy Poe of Cropwell and Walter Wydmon of Lake Station, Ind.; sisters, Zola Parker and Lera Isbell of Cropwell; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Walter Wydmon Jr., Johnny Isbell Jr., Jackie Boyd Jr., Justin Isbell Ricky Donahoo and Alan Little Sr.

Kilgroe Funeral Home in Pell City will direct the service.

BETTY SUMMERVILLE

ASHLAND — Funeral service for Betty Summerville, 60, will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Benefield Funeral Home chapel in Ashland with the Rev. Steve Mitchell officiating. Memorial service to be held at a later date.

Mrs. Summerville died July 29 at Carraway Methodist Medical Center in Birmingham. She was a native of Sycamore and was a former resident of Rochester, N.Y. She had lived in Ashland for the past 24 years and was retired from Eastman Kodak as a machinist and blueprint reader in Rochester, N.Y.

She is survived by daughter, Bonnie Morgan of Ashland; son, William Summerville of Ashland; her mother, Ruth Moncrief of Ashland; sisters, Barbara Lewis of Oxford and Doris Moncrief of Weaver; brothers, Terry Moncrief of Ohatchee, Edward Moncrief of Anniston and Clyde Moncrief and James C. Foster of Ashland; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 5 until 8 p.m. and until service time Friday.

Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland will direct the service.

WOODROW RUSSELL

ANNISTON — Funeral service for Woodrow Russell, 41, of 621 Knox Avenue, will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Sweet Rock Full Gospel Baptist Church with the Rev. Harry Malone, the Rev. Clarence Henderson and the Rev. Wonder I. Osborne officiating. Burial will be in Kelly Springs Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Russell died July 27 at Stringfellow Memorial Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert L. Russell Sr. and Eliza Maude Turner Russell, and two brothers, William Ben Russell and Donald V. Russell. He was in the Army and Reserve for 15 years, was a 1982 graduate of Munford High School and was a member of Sweet Rock Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was formerly employed by U.S. Casting Company, Sampson Cordage and M. & N. Valve Company. He was a member of Thomas Temple Lodge No. 250 of the Free and Accepted Masons and was a member of the Glass, Molders, Pottery, Plastic and Allied Workers of the International Union No. 324.

He is survived by his wife, Bridgette Lewis Russell of Anniston; daughter, Brittany Lewis of Anniston; son, Brandon L. Russell of Anniston; sisters, Linda Doobay of Neptune, N.J., Brenda Johnson, Ethelena McNeal and Carolene Hugley of Anniston, Lola Madden and Margaret Estelle of Munford, Robbie Maddox of Jacksonville and Nancy Sloan of Long Branch, N.J.; and brothers, Tommie Russell and Robert L. Russell Jr. of Munford, Jerry Russell of Eatontown, N.J., and Dave Russell of Anniston.

The family will receive friends at the church for one hour before the service.

Deacons of Sweet Rock Full Gospel Baptist Church will serve as pallbearers.

Terry's Metropolitan Mortuary will direct the service.

LYDIA COLLINS

RIVERDALE, Ga. — Lydia Collins, 85, formerly of Anniston, died July 30 at Southern Regional Medical Center in Riverdale, Ga.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Ervin Funeral Chapel.

EDWARD DOWDELL

ALEXANDER CITY — Edward Dowdell died July 30 at his residence.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Wright's Funeral Home.

ETTA DUFF

ANNISTON — Funeral service for Etta Duff, 89, will be Saturday at noon at New Hope Baptist Church in Anniston with the Rev. J.H. Stringer officiating. Burial will be in Eden Hills Cemetery.

Mrs. Duff died July 25 at Jacksonville Rehabilitation. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie Duff, and her parents, Peter and Laura McGraw. She was a lifelong resident of Anniston.

She is survived by sons, George Duff of Anniston, Henry Cooley of Oxford and Willie Duff of Fort Worth, Texas; daughters, Barbara Ward of Anniston, Jessie Jenkins of Indianapolis, Ind., Doris Barber of New York City and Mary Francis of Bronx, N.Y.; 23 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Ervin Funeral Chapel will direct the service.
