David Justin “D.J.” Hines

Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home, Columbus, Ind.

David Justin “D.J” Hines, 14, of Columbus, Ind. died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006 at Columbus Regional Hospital.

Hines was born in Monroeville and was a freshman at Jefferson Education Center.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel Ray Hines and grandparents, Mack Stacey, Iva Hines-Stigdon and Arthur D. Hines.

Survivors include his father, David “Smokey” Hines of Columbus; his mother, Nicki A. Stacey Hines of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; one brother, Chris J. Hines of Columbus and a grandmother, Alice Mooney of Goodway.

Services will be held today (Thursday, Jan. 4) at 3 p.m. at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Deer Cemetery in Franklin.

Memorials can be made to Hospice of Barholomew County.

Joseph Edward “Joe” Hornady

Monroe Chapel, Monroeville

Joseph Edward “Joe” Hornady, 73, of Monroeville died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2006 in Mobile.

Hornady was a native and lifelong resident of Monroe County and a member of the First Baptist Church of Monroeville. He was the founder and owner of Hornady Metal Works and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly “Bebe” Hornady of Monroeville; two sons, Joseph E. (Leslie) Hornady Jr. and Jonathan Parker (Teresa) Hornady, both of Monroeville; one brother, B.C. Hornady of Monroeville; one sister, Nancy Hornady Ikner of Daphne and three grandchildren.

Services were held Sunday, Dec. 31 at 2 p.m. at Monroe Chapel with Rev. Kenneth Johnson and Glenn Eubanks officiating. Burial followed in the Pineville Cemetery in Monroeville.

The family request that in lieu of flowers that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, 3054 McGehee Road, Montgomery, Ala. 36111.

E. C. Metts

Johnson Funeral Home, Monroeville

E. C. Metts, 81, of Uriah died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006 at Monroe County Hospital.

Metts was a native and resident of Monroe County all of his life. He was a supervisor for the Frisco Manufacturing Company and was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Inez Metts of Uriah; one son, Frank Griffin of Uriah; two daughters, Dianne (James) Bohannon of Uriah and Martha (Jerry) Nall of Excel; one sister, Laura (Al) Marsh of Massachusetts; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were held on Friday, Dec. 29 at 3 p.m. at Poplar Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Walter Sheffield and Rev. Mike Grindle officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Ardell Mitchell Ross

Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home, Atmore

Ardell Mitchell Ross, 90, of Atmore died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006 in Monroeville.

Ross was born in Repton and had been a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert L. Ross and a granddaughter.

Survivors include one son, Jeff Ross of Atmore; one daughter, Ida R. (Gene) Hall of Atmore; one granddaughter and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held Tuesday, Jan. 2 at 11 a.m. from Atmore Memorial Chapel with Rev. Leo Hammons officiating. Burial followed in Huxford Baptist Cemetery.

Myrtle Conway Singleton

Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home, Atmore

Myrtle Conway Singleton, 86, of Atmore died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006.

Singleton was a native of McCullough and a resident of Atmore. She was a member of Atmore Baptist Temple.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret Lee and two grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Clark Hill Singleton of Atmore; one son, Lane Singleton of Atmore; two daughters, Margie Gross of Atmore and Johnice Danner of Montgomery; two brothers, Winston Conway and Ray Conway, both of Pensacola, Fla.; five sisters, Mable Johnson of Atmore, Leatrice Stacey of McCullough, Joyce Neal of Megargel, Katherine Drew of Atmore and Ophelia Linam of Monroeville; eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.

Services were held Tuesday, Jan 2 at 10 a.m. at the Atmore Baptist Temple with Rev. Doug Odom and Rev. Keith Johnson officiating. Burial followed in the McCullough Cemetery.

Rev. John W. Sowell

Eastern Gate Memorial Funeral Home, Pensacola, Fla.

Rev. John W. Sowell, 81, of Seminole, Fla. died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006.

Rev. Sowell was born in Bradley, was a long-time resident of Pensacola and had resided in Seminole for the past 11 years.

He was an ordained minister of the Assemblies of God for the past 50 years and had pastored churches in Tennessee, Alabama and Florida. He was the founding pastor of Pine Forest Assembly of God Church in Pensacola. He was retired but had returned to the staff of the church for the past 10 years.

He is survived by his wife, Vernell “Susie” Sowell; one daughter, Martha (Sonny) Sowell Hinson of Decatur; three sons, Michael “Mike” (Cheryl) Sowell of Excel; Bill Sowell of Jacksonville, Fla. and Mark Anthony (Jean) Sowell of Seminole; one sister, Lois Ellis; three brothers, Grady Sowell, Cecil Sowell and Joe (Buddy) Sowell; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Wednesday, Dec. 27 at 2 p.m. in the Pine Forest Assembly of God Church with Rev. Avon Fowler, Pastor Gene Hudson and Rev. Bobby Thompson officiating. Burial followed in the Eastern Gate Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Robert Edward Cumbie Jr.

Johnson Funeral Home, Monroeville

Robert Edward Cumbie Jr., 60, of Uriah died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007 in a local hospital.

Cumbie was a native of Hybart but had lived in Uriah most of his life. He was a retired schoolteacher from the J.U. Blacksher High School.

Survivors include his mother, Florence Cumbie; a sister, Barbara Lambert; a brother, Chris Cumbie; two sons, John Kenneth Cumbie and Robert E. Cumbie III and a daughter, Rachael Lauren Cumbie.

Services were held Tuesday, Feb. 13 at 11 a.m. from the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Marlan Brown and the Rev. Mark Wittington officiating. Burial followed in the Uriah Cemetery.

Thomas Andrew Hegarty

Monroe Chapel, Monroeville

Thomas Andrew Hegarty, 85, of Monroeville died Friday, Feb. 9, 2007 at his home.

Hegarty was a native of San Francisco, Calif. and has resided in Monroeville for the past four years. He was an administrative clerk for the City and County of San Francisco. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Sally Hegarty.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Daniel Hegarty of Monroeville and two grandsons.

Services will be held at a later date at St. Annes Parish Catholic Church in San Francisco.
