WILLIE LEE ASHWORTH IRELAND

Baptist church member

Willie Lee Ashworth Ireland, 95, died Nov. 13, 2004. She was born March 3, 1909, in Sandusky, Ala., to William Lorenzo and Georgia Lee Ashworth. She attended Sandusky Elementary School and Howard High School and was married to James Floyd Ireland on Dec. 5, 1926. She was baptized in Sandusky Baptist Church and raised her family at Pratt City Baptist Church and Pike Avenue Baptist Church. After her son became pastor at Dolomite Baptist Church, the Irelands moved there. Later, they moved to Center Point and became members of the First Baptist Church of Center Point and later, Hilldale Baptist Church.

After retiring, they moved to Shelby County and became members of Four Mile Baptist Church and later, the First Baptist Church of Columbiana. In 1982, they moved to Hoover and joined Green Valley Baptist Church, and in 1991, to Jefferson City, Tenn., where they became members of the First Baptist Church there. She was active in each of these churches, teaching Sunday school, serving in the Women's Missionary Union in various capacities, leading youth organizations, singing in the choir, working in Mothers' Day Out, serving as hostess and working in many other capacities.

She was a charter member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union and a charter member of the West End and Highland Hospital Auxiliary, serving as president of both of these organizations.

She was preceded in death by her husband after almost 67 years; her sons, Jere Ray and Ralph Larry; her parents; her sister, Joyce; her brothers, Willis "Buddy," James Jefferson "Jim," Garlin Allen "Monk" and Maxwell Griffin, who died on Normandy Beach during World War II; one grandchild, June Carol Storey; and one great-grandchild, Brian Ireland.

She is survived by a son, Dan (Polly) Ireland; two daughters, June (Howard) Storey and Gail (Jimmy) O'Quinn; a sister-in-law, Maud Higgins; five grandsons, three granddaughters; seven great-grandsons; seven great-granddaughters; one great-great-grandson; four great-great-granddaughters; and a host of relatives and friends.

Service was Nov. 18 at Ridout's Elmwood Chapel with burial in Elmwood Cemetery, Ridout's Elmwood Chapel directing.

ALEX DAVIS JR.

Columbiana resident

Alex Davis Jr., 78, of Columbiana died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, at home. He was born March 25, 1926, in Shelby County.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Davis; his children, Beverly Hrisko, Marilyn McDaniel, Ted Wynn, James Edward Wynn and Sophia Mentch; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mae Wolfe and Fay Theodore.

Service will be today, Nov. 24 at Bolton-Letlow Chapel, the Rev. Roland Foster presiding. Burial will follow in Pinelawn Gardens, Bolton-Letlow directing.

ELNA DAVIS BROWN

Alabaster resident

Elna Davis Brown, 83, of Alabaster died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at a local care facility. She was born June 5, 1921, in Shelby.

She is survived by three daughters, Carolyn (Ray) Payne of Columbiana, Charlotte (Joe) Hal of Helena and Jan (Ron) Jones of Duluth, Ga.; three grandchildren, Charla (Steve) Hall, Darren (Terri) Payne and Kelly Galloway; one great-grandchild, Jordan Payne; and one brother, Chandler (Yvonne) Davis.

Graveside service was Nov. 26 at Shelby Memory Gardens, Bolton-Letlow Funeral Home directing.

DONNA CARLISLE HESTER

Active in the chamber of commerce

Donna Carlisle Hester, 41, died Nov. 24, 2004, at home following an eight-month battle with cancer. She was born March 16, 1963, in Rock Hill, S.C., and graduated from Fort Mill High School in 1981 and served as student government president during her senior year.

She received her undergraduate degree from Clemson University in 1985 and her master's degree in business administration from Samford University in 1995. She was an account executive with Capital Partners Leasing of Birmingham.

Previously, she spent 16 years in sales and marketing with Coca-Cola USA, Bausch and Lomb and Proctor and Gamble.

She was founder of the Little Ones Memory Garden at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens and was also active in the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce.

She was preceded in death by a son, William;

She is survived by her husband, Raymond J. Hester Jr.; two children, Alex and Grace; two stepchildren, Pamela and A.J.; her mother, Sarah D. Carlisle of Tega Cay, S.C.; her father and stepmother, Jim and Linda Carlisle of Greensboro, N.C.; four brothers, Jim Jr. of Raleigh, N.C., David of New York City, Daniel and Matthew of Greensboro; one sister, Janice Carlisle of Tega Cay, S.C.; many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Service was Nov. 27 at Southminister Presbyterian Church with the family receiving guests in Grace Hall following, Charter Funeral Home directing.

WILMA R. RUSS

Mississippi resident

Wilma R. Russ, 64, of Kiln, Miss., died Nov. 23, 2004, in Biloxi, Miss. Service was Nov. 25 at Pine Hill Cemetery in Jemison, Edmond Fahey Funeral Home directing.

WILLIE EDWARD SCURLOCK

Grandfather of 18

Willie Edward Scurlock, 74, of Montevallo died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, at a local hospital. He was born March 23, 1930, in West Blocton.

He is survived by his sons, David (Frances) Scurlock and Glenn (Bonnie) Scurlock; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers, Aaron Scurlock Jr. and G.W. Scurlock; and sisters, Dorothy Taylor, Maggie Smith and Yvonne Parks.

Service was Nov. 24 at Bolton-Letlow Chapel with burial following in Hebron Cemetery in West Blocton, Bolton-Letlow Funeral Home directing.

JAMES CARL SMITH

Bibb County native

James Carl Smith, 56, of Clanton died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, in Clanton.

He was born Oct. 19, 1948, in Bibb County to the late James Horace Smith and Theo Melton. He worked as a mechanic.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda Smith of Clanton; his son, Chris Smith of Clanton; three stepsons, James Smith of Jemison, Bruce Smith of Calera and Jerry Smith of Montevallo; three brothers, Morgan Smith of Satsuma, Jerry Smith of Verbena and Renfroe Smith of Calera; one granddaughter, Kaylie Smith of Jemison; three step-granddaughters; and one step-grandson.

Service was Nov. 26 at Martin Funeral Home Chapel in Clanton, the Rev. Odean Johnson presiding. Burial followed in Providence No. 1 in Montevallo, Martin Funeral Home directing.

MARTHA JEAN WHITE

Psychometrist

Martha Jean White, 57, of Sylacauga died Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, at her home. She was born Feb. 22, 1947, in Jefferson County and was employed by Talladega County Schools as a psychometrist.

She is survived by her goddaughter, Martha Jean Washburn; her parents, Robert and Deborah Washburn; her sisters in Christ, Sharon McEwen and Rebecca Robinson; and other family and friends.

Service was Nov. 28 at First United Methodist Church in Sylacauga, the Revs. Todd Henderson and Asa Boozer presiding. Burial followed in Shelby Memory Gardens in Calera, Bolton-Letlow Funeral Home directing.

DOROTHY M. CHAMPION BOYLES

Union Hill Freewill Baptist Church member

Dorothy M. Champion Boyles, 79, of Alabaster died Dec. 2, 2004. She was formerly of the Vandiver area and was preceded in death by her husband, John Carl Boyles. She was a member of Union Hill Freewill Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Boyle (Wayne) Beavers of Indian Springs and Carlene Boyles (John) Bonifay; her granddaughter, Kim Beavers (Steven) McNickle of Jacksonville, Fla.; her grandson, James M. (Amy) Richardson III; six great-grandchildren, Tyler, Taylor and Trevor McNickle of Jacksonville, Fla., and Nicholas, Chelsea and Zachary Richardson of Frankfurt, Ky.; and a special niece, Eveyln "Mickey" Hardy of Homewood.

Service was Dec. 5 at Kilgroe Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Forest Crest Cemetery, Kilgroe directing.
