RICHARD HOUSTON LOVELADY

Pelham resident

Richard Houston Lovelady, 51, of Pelham died Saturday, May 29, 2004. He was born in Alabama on Dec. 2, 1952, to James A. "Jimmy" Lovelady and Janie Ruth Stanford Lovelady.

He was preceded in death by his mother and his sister, Linda K. Lovelady Fulgham.

He is survived by his sons, Eric Lovelady of Louisiana and Lane Lovelady of Montevallo; his daughter, Jennifer Lovelady of Montevallo; his father, Harold H. Lovelady of Helena; and his brother, Jimmy (Janice) Lovelady of Alabaster.

Graveside service was June 5 at Helena City Cemetery, the Rev. Jeff Fortenberry presiding and Charter Funeral Home directing.

EVELYN D. LOWE

Vincent first lady

Evelyn D. Lowe, 81, of Vincent died Friday, June 11, 2004, at home. She was born Jan. 4, 1923, to Myrtie Rae and William Austin Davis in Richton, Miss., the youngest of two children.

She was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church, serving as the first church training director. She was also Church Training Director/Discipleship Training Director for the Shelby Baptist Association from 1962 to 1995. She was a special worker for the state discipleship training department for at least 25 years.

She was retired from the state's Administrative Office of Courts, where she served for many years as deputy circuit clerk in Shelby County. She was the county's Legal Secretary of the Year in 1978-79. She worked with the Shelby Baptist Youth Rally from 1970-1988 as its director. She was the first secretary of the Gas Board of the town of Vincent and served on the Vincent Housing Authority Board for many years.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, John Alpha Lowe; one son, Joseph Wayne Lowe; two grandchildren, Jennifer L. Berry and Timothy Wayne Lowe; great-grandchildren, Ian Tyler Rettig, Alex Ryan Rettig and Margaret Evelyn Lowe; and a sister, Gretchen Hinds.

Service was June 12 at Calvary Baptist Church, Wayne Lowe and John Sawyer presiding. Burial followed in Macedonia Cemetery, Bolton-Letlow Funeral Home directing. The family requests memorial donations be made to the church's youth building fund.

MIRIAM JOYCE MARTIN

Montevallo resident

Miriam Joyce Martin, 55, of Montevallo died June 10, 2004. She attended the church of God.

She is survived by her husband, Fred Martin; her daughter, Etta Jo Carroll; her granddaughters, Mandy (James) Tanton and Christy Carroll, all of Montevallo; her great-grandson, Anthony Joseph Tanton; her sister, Bernice Higginbotham of Jasper; one nephew; a number of nieces; and a host of friends and loved ones.

Service was June 14 at Charter Funeral Home, Bill Wright presiding. Burial followed in Pelham City Cemetery, Charter Funeral Home directing.

ELLA RUTH SKINNER

Mississippi native

Ella Ruth Skinner, 74, of Helena died June 10, 2004. She was a member of the New Hope Presbyterian Church and was a Mississippi native.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Milton C. Skinner Sr.; sons, Billy (Donna) Skinner, Sammy (Brenda) Skinner and Milton (Janis) Skinner; daughters, Linda Hutchison, Cathy (Sandy) Burnett and Cindy (Amos) Richey; one sister, Odiel (Troy) Pitts; 14 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Service was June 12 at the church, Donny Acton presiding. Burial followed at Bryan Memorial Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Ridout's Southern Heritage Chapel directing.

MICHAEL LADON TIDWELL

Originally from Pea Ridge

Michael LaDon Tidwell, 37, of McCalla and originally of Pea Ridge died Friday, June 11, 2004, in Tuscaloosa.

He is survived by his wife, Diane Jenkins Tidwell of McCalla; one daughter, Andrea Tidwell of McCalla; his mother, Freida Fancer of West Blocton; two sisters, Valerie Reach of West Blocton and Sherrie Faulkner of Tuscaloosa; one brother, Jeff Tidwell of Seattle, Wash.; two nephews; and two nieces.

Service was June 14 at Rockco's Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in New Horizon Cemetery in West Blocton, Rockco's directing.

POWELL BRADLEY WATKINS

U.S. Navy veteran

Powell Bradley Watkins, 79, of Prescott died June 6, 2004, at Veteran's Hospital in Birmingham. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dudley and Alma Watkins; brothers, Louis and Edward Watkins; sister, Lillian; and his wife of 58 years, Elaine Rich Watkins. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in March 1942 and served on the USS Helena and the USS Tisdale with the South Pacific Fleet for the duration of World War II. He was a carpenter by trade and worked many years in the home building industry and the Birmingham Trust National Bank. He retired while working for the Shelby County School System. He was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church of Pell City and was formerly a deacon and member of Antioch Baptist Church in Columbiana.

He is survived by his son, Michael (Kathy) Watkins; his grandsons, Bradley and Lee Watkins and Owen Brown; his granddaughter, Kimberly Watkins Smith; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Edna W. Blythe of Mountain Brook and Sadie W. Gamble of Brandon, Fla.

Graveside service was June 10 at Pinelawn Gardens, the Revs. Howard Brasher and Joe Stone presiding, and Bolton-Letlow Funeral Home directing.

SIDNEY ROLAND BLACKERBY

Wilsonville resident

Sidney Roland Blackerby, 78, of Wilsonville died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at a local hospital. He was born July 9, 1925, in Chelsea.

He is survived by his wife, Tommie Blackerby of Wilsonville; two daughters, Janice Burks of Wilsonville and Kay Blackerby of Birmingham; one grandson, Ashley (Elizabeth) Burks; and one brother, Rusau Blackerby of Alabaster.

Service was June 19 at Bolton-Letlow Chapel, the Revs. Steve Thomas and Red Vansant presiding. Burial followed in Wilsonville City Cemetery, Bolton-Letlow Funeral Home directing.

EFFIE M. CRUMPTON

Columbiana resident

Effie M. Crumpton, 93, of Columbiana died Monday, June 14, 2004, at a local nursing home. She was born Jan. 1, 1911, in Columbiana.

She is survived by a sister, Estella Simmons of Columbiana; a brother, Ernest A. Smith of Wilsonville; and several nieces and nephews.

Service was June 16 at Bolton-Letlow Chapel, the Rev. William Fredrick presiding. Burial followed in Williams Cemetery, Bolton-Letlow Funeral Home directing.

CYNTHIA LOUISE HIGGINS CUSHMAN

Mother of five

Cynthia Louise Higgins Cushman, 78, of Helena died Thursday, June 17, 2004. She was the daughter of Bernie B. and Florence Lillian Donaldson Higgins of Elora, Tenn., where she attended grammar school. She then graduated from Flintville High School at Flintville, Tenn., and attended Austin Peay University. She was a member of Elora Baptist Church at that time. She married Lee Harrelson Cushman Jr., who preceded her in death, at Oak Ridge, Tenn., on Feb. 24, 1948. She was a member of the Birmingham Fern Society, Shelby County YMCA and Helena Methodist Church where she organized the single-adult Sunday school class and telephoned new members and visitors. As an avid gardener, she spent years in a Federated Garden Club as a Master Judge.

She is survived by her children, Jeffery Vann (Darla) Cushman, Bernard Lee (Elsie) Cushman, Cindy Lou Cushman (Jack) Hearn, Samuel Francis (Joann) Cushman and Ellen Kaye Cushman (Howell) Henderson; grandchildren, Virginia Ellen Hearn, Howell Berry (Tiffany) Henderson Jr., Elizabeth Louise Hearn, Samuel Burgess Henderson, Lucy Leigh Henderson, Kathryn Ann Cushman and Lilley Frances Cushman; great-grandson, Howell Berry Henderson III; a sister, Mary Virginia "Ginny" Higgins (Edwin) Lusk; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Estelle Marion.

Service was June 19 at Hunter Street Baptist Church, Charter Funeral Home directing. Graveside service was held in Tennessee on June 21.

JAMES B. "BOOTS" HILL

Father of five

James B. "Boots" Hill, 74, of Cullman died June 15, 2004, at Cullman Regional Medical Center.

He is survived by three sons, Joe (Teresa) Hill of Hoover, Jim (Ann) Hill of Kennesaw, Ga., and Jeff (Jennifer) Hill of Cullman; two daughters, Angie (Charley) Duncan of Millbrook and Amy (Bruce) Farr of Cullman; his former wife, Sue Hill of Cullman; four brothers, Elvin Hill of Columbiana, Charles Hill of Lineville, Roy Hill of Cullman and Jerry Hill of Lineville; three sisters, Mattieleen Todd of Jacksonville, Catherine Britt of Athens and Maudine Birtchfield of Jonesboro, Ga.; and five grandchildren, Susan Marie Duncan, John Hill and Jesse, Jake and Joey Thompson.

Service was June 17 at Moss Funeral Home Chapel, Brother Sam Hollis presiding. Burial followed in Cullman City Cemetery, Moss Service Funeral Home directing.
