Kasilof resident Danny Neal Hansen died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, as a result of a motorcycle accident near Cooper Landing. He was 45.

Carolyn Faye Jones O'Neal
Kenai resident Carolyn Faye Jones O'Neal died Friday, August 11, 2000, at her home in Kenai surrounded by her family. She was 66.
Liturgy services will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Kenai. Viewing will be held one hour prior to services. Sister Joyce Ross will officiate. Additional services will be held in Holyoke, Colo., followed by burial in the Holyoke Cemetery.
Mrs. O'Neal was born the second of three children on April 19, 1934, in Greeley, Colo. to Otis and Helen Jones. She attended schools in Ault and Eaton, Colo. graduating from Eaton High School in 1952. She attended the University of Colorado for one year and graduated from Barnes Business College in 1954. She was married to Lt. Rupert Ronald Precht in August 1954, at the First Congregational Church in Eaton, Colo. To this union were born three children, Mary, Barbara, and Rupert Ronald Jr.
Following the death of her husband, she lived with her children in Eaton. In 1962, she was united in marriage to Dennis James O'Neal at Our Lady of the Mountains in Estes Park, Colo. This union was blessed with two children, Shawn and James. The O'Neals made their home in Holyoke, Colo. The couple retired from farming in 1996 and moved to Kenai.
Mrs. O'Neal was an active member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Kenai. She volunteered at "Clothes Quarters" and the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center, and enjoyed activities at the senior center. In Holyoke, she was a faithful member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, serving for many years as the church organist and as a catechism teacher. She was the first woman elected to the Holyoke School Board in 1972. She also served on the Melissa Memorial Hospital Board in 1972. In addition, she was an active member in the P.E.O. and Eureka Club. Her interests included fishing, travel and playing cards with her many friends. She enjoyed gardening, baking and welcoming friends and family into her home.
"Carolyn's children were nurtured to be loving, giving, strong and independent people. She encouraged them to learn and to explore the world around them, taking every opportunity to help others. No one was a stranger to her for very long, " her family said.
According to the family, "Carolyn will be missed for so many reasons by so many people. She loved with all her heart, and leaving us was the hardest part. Carolyn will live with us in our hearts, bringing warm feelings of kindness and a smile."
She is survived by her husband, Dennis J. O'Neal, of Kenai; five children, Mary O'Neal of Ridgecrest, Calif., Barbara Heath and husband Walter, of Simi Valley, Calif., Rupert O'Neal and wife Claire of Holyoke, Colo., Shawn O'Neal and wife Kristi of Evergreen, Colo., and James O'Neal and wife Moira of San Carlos, Calif.; nine grandchildren, Katiana Rush, Jordin, and Adam Heath, John "Jake, " Robin and Emily O'Neal, Kelsey and Denton O'Neal, and Catherine Carolyn O'Neal; sister, Virginia Billings of Greeley, Colo.; sister in-law; Helen Schwisow of Sterling, Colo.

Raymond V. Weigle
Longtime Sterling resident Raymond Vincent Weigle died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at Central Peninsula General Hospital. He was 71. Mr. Weigle's ashes will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., at a future date.
He was born Nov. 10, 1928, in New Jersey. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1951 and served until retiring in 1973 as a colonel at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey.
He is survived by his daughters, Nancy Weigle of Monterey, Calif., Linda Base of Belair, Md., and Susan Weigle of San Francisco, Calif.; sons, Raymond Weigle of Soldotna, and Robert Weigle of Anchorage; brother, Joe Weigle of Shelton, Conn., and seven grandchildren.

Ron Krigbaum
Kenai resident Ron Krigbaum died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, at Central Peninsula General Hospital in Soldotna. He was 33.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Peninsula Memorial Chapel in Kenai.
Mr. Krigbaum was born May 30, 1967, in Petaluma, Calif. He and his family moved to Alaska in 1981. He attended East High School in Anchorage and graduated in 1985. He met his wife Melanie while working for Carrs Quality Centers in Anchorage, and they were married on July 27, 1993.
The couple moved to Kenai in 1994, where he worked for Fred Meyer. He then became an honest and devoted employee of Seekins Ford.
Ron was an active and enthusiastic Pop Warner Football coach for the Kenai Steelers.
He loved football, coaching, Mopar cars and fishing and camping with his family.
"Ron was a devoted father of a loving family, with the kindness and devotion of a wonderful friend who was always there for everyone, " his family said.
"His children were the main focus of his attentions. Ron shared the passion of fast cars with his son, Justin, and coaching and taking his son Cody's football team to a state championship.
"He created a fulfilled life with his family in outdoor activities. His two youngest children considered him their own 'free entertainment.'
He will be remembered for his own outgoing personality, sharp wit and being the center of the crowd. He will be deeply missed by all that ever met him."
Ron is survived by his wife of seven years, Melanie; his children Justin, Cody, Tawni and Billy; mother and stepfather, Melinda and Tom Ballenger; father William Krigbaum; brothers and sisters-in-law, Andrew and Michelle Krigbaum and Patrick and Crystal Krigbaum;
Grandmothers, Joy Wright and Viola Krigbaum; mother-in-law Judy De Yonge; mother and stepfather of his son Justin, Shanna and Kurt Nelson; numerous uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews; and his family at Seekins Ford.

Danny Neal Hansen
Kasilof resident Danny Neal Hansen died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident near Cooper Landing. He was 45.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Peninsula Memorial Chapel in Kenai. His brother, Nick Hansen, will officiate at the service.
Mr. Hansen was born Sept. 23, 1954, at American Falls, Idaho, to Eugene and Della Hansen. He moved with his family to Alaska in 1961 and graduated high school in Kenai.
He served in U.S. Air Force from Aug. 14, 1973 to March 14, 1975, during Vietnam. He had lived in Soldotna and also at his house on North Cohoe Loop. He worked as a construction worker and as a farmer, in the canneries, and also for his father in hunting and guide service.
Mr. Hansen was an active member of the Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.). He enjoyed playing the guitar and riding motorcycles and horses.
He is survived by his parents of Soldotna; brothers, Nick Hansen, of Soldotna, Dennis Hansen, of Vacaville, Calif.; sister, Nancy Chaney of Dixon, Calif.; many nieces and nephews.

Floyd Albert Ellison
Floyd Albert Ellison died Jan. 1, 2001, in Las Vegas, Nev., due to heart complications. He was 88.
Services were held Jan. 5 in St. Clair, Mo.
He was born March 27, 1912, in St. Clair, the oldest of eight children. He worked as an auditor with Florsheim International Shoe Company for more than 40 years before retiring and moving to Kenai.
Mr. Ellison was married to Roberta Roland, who died in 1979. He later married Nelda Chitwood and lived seven years in Kenai, spending most of their time fishing and in the outdoors. The couple were members of the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kenai.
He is preceded in death by his wives, Roberta and Nelda.
Mr. Ellison is survived by daughter Marilyn Butts and grandson Kevin Butts, both of Las Vegas; and granddaughter Kelly Ellison, of Kansas City, Mo.

Robin Edward Pennington
Sterling resident Robin Edward Pennington died Jan. 7, 2001, as a result of a motor vehicle accident on the Sterling Highway. He was 55.
Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Sterling Elementary School in Sterling.
Mr. Pennington was born Jan. 19, 1945, in Kansas City, Mo. He was raised and educated in Missouri, Colorado and California. He also served in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Pennington moved to Alaska in 1981 and resided in Kenai for two years. He then moved to Soldotna and in 1996 to Sterling. He worked for the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District as an electronics technician.
Mr. Pennington's hobbies included building and repairing single-engine aircraft, woodworking, hunting, fishing, rebuilding classic cars and playing the guitar.
"An Alaska renaissance man, self-taught in all the possibilities, he led his life without limits. Anything was within reach if you just believed enough, " the family said.
Mr. Pennington was preceded in death by his son, Patrick Gene Pennington.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Barbara; daughter Bonnie; sisters Amy, Neta and Weltha; and brother Bert.

William "Bill" Dudley Thurmond
Alaska Native William "Bill" Dudley Thurmond died Jan. 10, 2001, at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage. He was 45.
A funeral will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Glacierview Baptist Church in Homer. Pastors Rick Wise and Rod Benner will officiate. Brian Edward and Larry Garvey will be ushers. A burial will follow at the Anchor Point Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Kirk Herrick, Wes Tufford, Mike Fell, Ken Frasier, Dave McKinney and Chuck Cordova. Honorary pallbearers will are Craig McDonald, Keith Nelson, Dan Mumey and Steve Kesner.
Mr. Thurmond was born Sept. 28, 1955, on the Mutch homestead on Milo Fritz Road in Anchor Point. He attended Homer High School and graduated in 1973. He owned and operated Thurmond's Auto in Anchor Point for more than 10 years. He attended the Christian Community Church in Homer.
Mr. Thurmond received numerous honors including Merits of Sponsors to Small Schools and Business of the Year in 1996. He also supported the Homer Seniors. Mr. Thurmond loved to fly, fish, snowmachine and hunt on the Yukon River.
Mr. Thurmond is survived by his wife, Rochelle; his children, Heather, Autumn, Nick, Wade and Danelle; his grandchildren, Kyler, Kymmie, and Carson Jackson; his parents, Clint and Vanita Thurmond; his sisters, Susan Kyllonen and Elaine Griner, and numerous uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Marion Guidry
Former Kenai resident Marion Guidry died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at Lafayette General Hospital in Louisiana after a three-year battle with lung cancer. He was 64.
Funeral services were held Jan. 1, 2001, at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Church Point, La. Monsignor Fred Swenson celebrated the funeral mass, and the rosary was recited at the funeral home, led by Rev. Michael Champagne.
Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were his son, Marcus Guidry, Shane Guidry, Kenneth Smith, Lark Hebert, Keith Savoy and Curley Guidry III. Honorary pallbearers were Holden Hare and Joshua Guidry.
Mr. Guidry resided in Kenai and along Kalifornsky Beach Road from 1972 to 1994. He was employed by Marathon Oil and worked on the Dolly Varden platform for 23 years.
When he retired, the family moved back to his hometown of Church Point.
Mr. Guidry was preceded in death by his father, Curley Guidry Sr.; brothers Curley "Doc" Guidry Jr., Floyd Guidry and Marcus Guidry; and sister, Joyce Kron.
He is survived by his mother, Vernice Guidry, of Church Point; his wife of 43 years, Patty Hebert Guidry, of Church Point; daughter and son-in-law, Kateri and Kenneth Smith, of Church Point; sons and daughters-in-law Marcus and Lisa Guidry of Church Point and Paul Shane and Holly Guidry of Seattle, Wash.; sister and brother-in-law, Margie and Gerald "Buddy" Savoy, of Eunice, La.; brother- and sister-in-law, Allen and Martha Hebert, of Church Point; grandchildren Brandi Jo Guidry, Joshua Shane Guidry and Michelle Marie Guidry.

Darrell Raymond Olson
Darrell Raymond "Freight Train" Olson died in Seward on Friday, Dec. 15, 2000. His death, from a heart attack, was attributed to "too much fun." He was 43.
Two potlatches will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, one at the Motherlode Lodge in Palmer and the other at DJ's Wheelhouse in Seward. Friends and family are encouraged to bring a dish, a story, a picture and a musical instrument. His ashes will be buried in Flat, Alaska, this summer.
Mr. Olson was born Oct. 2, 1957, in Minnesota. At 7, he was on a swim team, he played football and hockey. He loved an adventure, camping, fishing and the outdoors. At age 16 he moved to Alaska with his father.
During his lifetime he traveled widely and pursued many interests and vocations. He was a pilot, miner, trapper, tugboat captain, carpenter, catskinner, mechanic and even dabbled in dog mushing.
In 1977 he acquired a homestead in Flat, where he mined and ran a trapline on Bonanza Creek.
"He was a respected member of the mining community and he could always be counted on to lend a helping hand, " family and friends said. "Freight Train packed an awful lot of living into his lifetime, like a nova he was almost larger than life. Built like an ox, his feats of strength are legendary.
"He traveled, worked and made friends from Nantucket to Hawaii and north to Barrow. He loved a party, a poker or a dice game or a group of friends sharing a drink. He had a heart as large as Alaska and he was loved by all that knew him, " family and friends added.
Mr. Olson lived in various communities in Alaska, among them Seward, Homer, Kodiak, Nome, McGrath and the Matanuska Valley.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond C. and Darlene J. Olson; nephew, Jason Weisinger; and companion, "Freebird."
Mr. Olson is survived by sisters Laura Daniells of Davis, Calif., Linda Estrada and Pamela Calcagno both of Battle Ground, Wash.; Freebird's daughter, Rainbow, who he loved as his own; "son, " Zachary; nieces Lisa, Amanda and Kelly; nephews Christopher, Nicholas and Erik.
