Michael S. Brock
Fox, Alaska & Buffalo, NY

Michael S. Brock, 50, a Buffalo, NY native whose varied life included work as a steelworker, on the Alaskan pipeline and as the owner of a tavern in Alaska, died unexpectedly, Monday, November 5, 2001 at his home in Fox.

Born and raised in Buffalo, he was a graduate of Riverside High School and Kent State University in Ohio.

A standout football player in high school, he went on to play college ball alongside Kent State greats and future NFL stars Jack Lambert and Don Nottingham.

His college years also found Brock in the middle of Vietnam War protests.

On May 4, 1970, the day four students were shot and killed by the Ohio National Guard at Kent State, Brock came to the rescue of Tom Grace, a Buffalo resident who was among the nine wounded.

The two remained life-long friends.

After college, Brock returned to Buffalo and worked at Bethlehem Steel’s Basic Oxygen Furnace unit in Lackawanna until he was laid off in 1976.

He then decided on a major geographic and career change, heading to Alaska where he found work on construction of the Alaskan oil pipeline.

In late 1977, he severely injured his legs while working on the pipeline, an event which led him to yet another career as owner of the Howling Dog Saloon in Fox.

In addition to his duties in Alaska, he also maintained strong ties to Western New York, making an annual 11,000-mile round trip to his winter home in Elma, NY.

During the winter months, he assisted with operations at the family-owned Max Brock Co., a recycling business located on Metcalf Street in Buffalo, NY.

“Mike had a personality as big as the Alaskan countryside that he adored,” said Buffalo labor lawyer Richard Lipsitz, a close friend.

“He had a wide knowledge of contemporary affairs, music and all manner of social questions.

Above all, he loved people and people loved him for his warmth, modesty and common touch.”

An all-around sportsman, he loved football, hockey and fishing.

He also has a lifelong interest in dogs, owning several exotic breeds.

He is survived by his mother, Ruth of Buffalo, NY; his wife, the former Angela DeFeis; two sons, Max and Nicholas; a daughter, Alexandra; and two sisters, Laurie Lisk of Buffalo, and Betsy Brock of New York City.

Funeral services were held Sunday, November 11, 2001 at the Sanctuary of Temple Beth Zion in Buffalo, New York.
