Harley Steward
Anchorage, AK
Harley Steward, 76, of Anchorage, died November 9, 2001 in Arizona of cardiac failure. He was born March 5, 1925 in Stark County, Illinois.
He attended Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois before joining the Army at age 18.
He served in World War II as a radioman in the Philippines and with the Occupation Forces in Japan.
He was honorably discharged in March 1946 with a Purple Heart.
He took over the farm of his father an grandfather in 1947.
The same year he married Arlene Blair.
In 1964 he and his family moved to Anchorage, where he joined the Carpenters Union through which he worked until he retired in 1987.
He was a member of the Union for 25 years.
Harley joined the Muldoon Volunteer Fire Department in 1965.
He was Asst. Chief when it was absorbed by the Anchorage Borough.
From the early 70’s through the late 80’s he helped provide communications for the Iditarod Race by setting up his ham radio at various checkpoints along the trail.
After retiring he volunteered at the Women’s Resource Center doing light maintenance work.
He was active in the Anchorage Amateur Radio Club, KL71ZZ will be missed.
Memorial services will be at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, November 18th at the First United Methodist Church of Anchorage, 725 West 9th Avenue.
He is survived by his wife; Arlene Steward of Anchorage, son; Jim and daughter in law Cindy of Eagle River, Alaska, son; Ken and daughter in law Cindy of Anchorage, and grandchildren Joe of Wasilla, Wendy of Eagle River, Ben of Talent, Oregon and Nick of Anchorage.

Geraldine D. Ronholdt
Fairbanks, Alaska
Longtime Fairbanks resident, Mrs. Geraldine D. Ronholdt, died peacefully early Saturday morning on November 10th, 2001. She was 73.
Geraldine was born on March 31st, 1928, in Anatone, Washington, to George and Mabel Malcom.
She grew up in Asotin, Washington, but also lived in Enterprize, Oregon, where she was employed as a practical nurse.
Geraldine also lived in Lewiston, Idaho, where she was employed at a bullet factory.
When she retired she moved to Fairbanks in 1981 with her husband and has been here ever since.
Geraldine was a loving, caring, and devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and fried.
She will be terribly missed by all who knew her.
Geraldine is survived by her husband, James Ronholdt of Fairbanks; her daughter, Sylvia Tridle of Lynden, WA; her daughter, Marlene Snodderly of Lewiston, ID; her daughter, Cindy Halsey of Asotin, WA; and her daughter, Trudy Halsey of Vancouver, WA; her sister, Lois Snodderly of Lewiston, ID; her brother, Lee Malcom of Lewiston, ID.
She is also survived by her seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many nieces & nephews.
A private memorial service will be held at Normal Hills Cemetery in Lewiston, Idaho, at a later date.

Sam K. Hopson
Atqasuk, Alaska
Atqasuk resident, Mr. Sam K. Hopson, died peacefully on Sunday, November 11th, 2001, at the Denali Center.
He was 73.
Sam was born to Alfred M. Hopson & Maggie (Itta) Hopson on September 16th, 1928, on Barter Island, Alaska.
Sam was a carpenter by trade, living most of his life in Barrow and Atqasuk.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred & Maggie Hopson; his stepmother, Harriet Hopson; his sister, Emily H. Brower; his brothers, Charles, Eben, Eddie, Billy, George and Jens Hopson.
Sam is survived by his wife, Joann C. Hopson; his daughters, Maggie Hopson & Hazel M. Hopson; his stepson, Norman L. Aishanna; his “grandkids” Lucy Hopson, Michelle Bordeaux, Freddy B. Hopson, Tiffany Hopson, Nate Simmonds Jr. and Sam B. Simmonds.
Sam is also survived by his great-grandson, Sam D. Hopson; brothers, Ben, Alfred and Hubert; sisters, Ethel Ungarook, Emma Bodfish, Ruth Biden, Annie Leavitt and Evelyn Williams.
Funeral Services were held 2:30 PM on Thursday, November 15th, at Meade River School in Atqasuk, AK.
Visitation was held from 1:30-2:30 prior to the funeral at the school.
Pallbearers include: Norman Aishanna, Nathaniel Simmonds Sr., Hubert Hopson, Paul Bodfish Sr., Arnold Brower Jr., Harvey Hopson, Price Ungarook, Billy Jens Leavitt, and Gary Hopson.
Burial will follow services at the Atqasuk Village Cemetery.

Jerry Harold Schneider
Delta Junction, Alaska
Delta Junction resident, Jerry Harold Schneider, 63, died Monday, November 12, 2001 of cancer at the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.
Jerry was born April 22 1938 in Canton, Ohio where he was raised and graduated from Lehrman High School.
Shortly thereafter, he furthered his education by attending the DeVry Technical Institute of Chicago.
Jerry had worked as an electronic technician and mechanic for farming equipment.
He had been employed with Goodyear Aero-Space and Babcocks & Wilcox Research Center and most recently as a Christian volunteer at the New Hope Community Church in Delta Junction where he had been a member for the last 17 years.
He had moved to Palmer, AK in 1976 where he lived until 1984 when he moved to Delta Junction making this his home.
Jerry was a trumpet player, he loved people, he loved to sing and enjoyed fishing, bowling and history.
The family wrote, “The family, friends and neighbors whose lives he touched will long remember Jerry’s quiet strength and dedication to his family and to his Lord.
The inspiration of his selfless love, tireless labor and wise counsel will remain a living legacy to bless all who were honored to know a man who lived his principles for God, and whose example shined as a light his passing could not extinguish.”
Jerry is preceded in death by his father, Harold Adolf Schneider and mother, Mary Katherine Schneider.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Barbara Schneider; sister, Barbara Gallo of Canton, OH; five children; Debrah Osgood of Chugiak, AK, Jeri Steiner of Eagle River, AK, Stephen Schneider of Fort St. John, B.C., Joanna Wiggins of Delta Junction and David Schneider of Delta Junction; 12 grandchildren & 1 great-granddaughter.
Memorial services were held 5:00 p.m., Saturday, November 17th, 2001 at the Delta Christian Center in Delta Junction.
A reception followed the services.
Inurnment was in the Rest Haven Cemetery in Delta Junction.

Ray Joseph Demit
Tetlin, Alaska
Lifelong Alaskan, Mr. Ray Joseph Demit, died Tuesday, November 13th, 2001, at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. He was 55.
Ray was born on April 23rd, 1946, to Fred & Bella (Joseph) Demit.
He graduated from Chemawa High School in Salem, Oregon.
Throughout his life, Ray was employed as a carpenter, surveyor, firefighter, electrician, laborer and musician.
He was a member of the Pentecostal Church.
Ray’s first love of music was & is playing the guitar; he also enjoyed dog-mushing.
Family Statement: “Ray had an independent spirit; he was an introverted intellectual thinker.
Ray was a great uncle, brother, son and friend to all.
He was always willing to lend a hand when it was needed.
Ray was preceded in death by his mother, Bella Demit; his brother, Howard Demit; his niece, Janet Demit and both his maternal & paternal grandparents.
Ray is survived by his father, Fred Demit of Tanacross/Tetlin, Alaska; his brother, Everett Demit of Tetlin; his sister, Arlene (& Jerry) Isaac of Tanacross; his sister Barbie (& Orville) Williams of Fairbanks; his nephews, Herbie Demit and Jerry Isaac Jr. both of Tanacross; his nephew, Damian Isaac of Ft. Richardson; his nephew, Galen Isaac of Lackland Air Force Base, Texas; his nephew, Elisha Demit of Tok; and his nephews Levi & Leo Williams both of Fairbanks.
Ray is also survived by his niece, Angelene Isaac of Tanacross; his niece, Shannon Kiehl of Fairbanks; his niece, Orvanna Williams of Fairbanks; his uncle, Robert (&Angel;) Demit of Northway and his aunt, Doris David of Palmer and numerous relatives from all over.
A Funeral Service was held in the Tetlin Community Hall at 1:00 PM on Sunday, November 18th, 2001.
Rev. David Ford & Rev. Paul Milanowski will be officiating services in Tetlin.
Interment was in the Tetlin Village Cemetery. Pallbearers included Crystal Wilson, Ernest Titus, David Sam, Lee Nocolai, James Allen and B. Thomas.
