Billy Clarance Sullivan

Former Juneau resident Billy Clarance Sullivan died July 12, 2000, at his home in Anchorage from cancer.

He was born May 25, 1958, in Fontana, Calif.

He moved to Alaska in 1987 where he worked for the steward's department of the Alaska Marine Highway System. He lived in Cordova for three years before moving to Juneau where he remained for a decade before relocating to Anchorage. For the past two years, he worked on board the M/V E.L. Bartlett. He was also the owner of the A-CAB Taxi Service in Cordova, Seward, Palmer and Wasilla.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge No. 1266 and the American Legion. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps and as a radioman in the U.S. Coast Guard for eight years.

He enjoyed photography, amateur radio communication, karaoke, entertaining and flying. He received his commercial pilot's license from the Sierra Academy of Aeronautics Technicians Institute.

He is survived by his wife Flordelina B. Sullivan, infant daughter Kaliya Jill and step-daughter Jheri Kuramoto all of Anchorage; son Delaney K. Sullivan of California; stepson Brad Kuramoto of Cordova; daughter Jacquelyn Sullivan of Port Gibson, Mich.; stepson Christopher O. Sullivan of Hermanville, Mich.; mother Lucy P. Sullivan of California; sister Teryll S. Coleman of New Hampshire; brothers Robert (and wife Frieda) Sullivan; David (and wife Vicky) Sullivan; Joel (and wife Beth) Sullivan; sisters Rossilyn, Jacquina and Alice Sullivan all of California; brother Mark (and wife Janie) Sullivan of Belgium; brother Jeff (and wife) Renee Sullivan of Oregon; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and his wife's family.

A visitation will be held today at Witzleben's Bragaw Chapel in Anchorage. A funeral service, with full military honors, will follow at 2 p.m. at Fort Richardson National Cemetery Chapel.

Thomas G. Hooten

Former Juneau resident Thomas G. Hooten, 64, died Aug. 4, 2000, at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage.

Hooten was born Dec. 18, 1935, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and grew up in Indiana and Oklahoma. He joined the Navy in 1954 and served in the SeaBees until 1958. He was employed in the airlines industry for more than 13 years, primarily with Western Airlines. He lived in Ketchikan in 1969, Juneau from 1969 to 1975, Anchorage from 1975 to 1977 and Wasilla from 1977 to 1986 and from 1993 until his death.

Mr. Hooten worked for the state of Alaska as a fee real estate appraiser, and owned and operated MATSU Appraisals in Wasilla. In 1998 he retired from National Bank of Alaska's Palmer branch.

His family wrote, "Tom particularly loved Southeast Alaska and requested that his ashes be scattered there. We will miss his wacky sense of humor, gentle smile, and generosity. He was so looking forward to building a dollhouse for his youngest granddaughter when he took ill."

Mr. Hooten was preceded in death by his parents, Rosabelle and Horace Raven Hooten. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Pauline Hooten; sister, J. Claire Doxator of Denver, Colo.; daughter and son-in-law, Carlye Hooten and Mike Monroe of Chico, Calif.; son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Marlene Hooten of Redwood City, Calif.; three granddaughters, Merrit and Tay Hoover of Chico and Maile Hooten of Redwood City; niece, Elizabeth Morenberg and family of Chadron, Neb.; and nephew, Edward Doxator and family of Chicago, Ill.

At his request no funeral services will be held.

Bruce E. May

Former Juneau resident Bruce E. May died Aug. 24, 2000, at his home in Kirkland, Wash.

May spent 18 years in Juneau. He served as a commodore of the Juneau Yacht Club and was one of the partners in Channel Bowl. He was an electrician and manager with Cochran Electric. He supervised the electric construction work on the State Office Building, the Court Plaza Building at Third and Main, the Sealaska Plaza, the Dimond Courthouse and remodel projects of Bartlett Hospital and the airport. He retired in 1989 and returned to Washington, where he grew up.

He was born Feb. 21, 1931, in Seattle. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1954.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman, bowler and boater and enjoyed camping with his family. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, a member of the IBEW, American Legion Post 124, the Elks Lodge, the American Bowling Congress and two senior bowling leagues.

He is survived by his wife Katherine (Kaye), daughter Gail Giroux (and husband Ed), grandson Nicholas Giroux, sister Dawn May Rosar, brother Wayne May, stepchildren David Benson (and wife Jodi), Marc and Gary Benson, Karyn Sanden (and husband James) grandchildren Christopher and Carl Sanden, Laura, Jennifer, Jason and Peter Sanden, all of Washington, and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his son Howard.

Services will be held Tuesday in Washington. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 21836, Juneau, AK, 99802.

Norma Grace Butler Bartoo

Longtime Juneau resident Norma Grace Butler Bartoo, 88, died June 11, 2000, at Bartlett Regional Hospital.

She was born December 30, 1911, in Pennsylvania.

She moved to Alaska with her husband and children in 1960. The family built a home near the Juneau Airport.

She was preceded in death by her husband Raymond Bartoo.

She is survived by her children Barbara Bartoo of Juneau, Russell Bartoo of Washington, Richard Bartoo of Illinois and Rowland Bartoo of Pennsylvania; grandchildren Scott Bartoo, Roy Bartoo, Tammi Bartoo, Todd Bartoo, Wayne Stevens, Debbie Stevens, Danny Stevens and Ruth Ann Brososky all of Juneau and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

George W. "Bill" Mann

Former Juneau resident George W. ``Bill" Mann died November 22, 1999, in Goodyear, Ariz., after a long battle with cancer.

He was born July 28, 1927, in Springfield, Ill.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean campaign and was stationed in Seoul. He worked in the logging and construction industries in California, Oregon and Washington before moving to Alaska in 1958. He was the owner and manager of Mann Construction. He retired to Arizona in 1988.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge 420, the Juneau Gold Club and the Eagle Nest Man's Golf Association of Pebble Creek in Arizona. He was an award-winning golfer and an avid fisherman. He loved boating, traveling and tending his rose garden.

He is survived by his wife Charlotte Ann of Douglas; daughters Mereta Brown of California; Teresa Hargis and Pamela Sue Berman of Oregon; Georgia Creager of Washington; step-sons Monty Compton of Anchorage and Gary Sjoroos of Washington; step-daughters Jane Goodrum of Washington, Frances Goudreau and Shelley Compton of Arizona; brothers Dean and David Whittler of Washington; sisters Dolores Foster of California; Lenora Sedy and Judy Stewart of Washington; and 15 grandchildren including Randy Sirois, Rich Sjoroos and Rob Sanford of Juneau.

A celebration of life will be held 8 a.m., June 22, aboard the ``Baranof Wind, " departing from the Four Season Marine dock near the ferry terminal. The round trip cruise will take about three hours. Mann's ashes will be scatted near Point Salisbury.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Institute for Cancer Research, 1759 R Street N.W., P.O. Box 97167, Washington, D.C., 20090.

Melrose Webster DeHart, Jr.

Longtime Juneau resident Melrose Webster DeHart, Jr., died May 14, 2000, at his home in Juneau after a long illness.

He was born on May 21, 1926, in Seattle to Vera Fern and Melrose DeHart, Sr.

He moved to Alaska in 1974 with his wife and children and worked on the Alaska Pipeline as a sheet-metal worker. He also worked as a sheet-metal worker and a plumber for Jack's Plumbing and Silverbow Construction. Dehart and his family moved to Tenakee Springs in 1990 where he owned and operated the QuikStop Cafe as well as working for LAB as the UPS agent in town.

Melrose served as a city council member and the president of the first chapter of AARP in Tenakee Springs. He had a deep love for the land and waters of Southeast Alaska. The family moved back to Juneau in 1996.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years Shirley; sons Maurice and Tim (and wife Kathy) DeHart of Juneau; Kurt DeHart of Hayden Lake, Idaho; Terry (and wife Karna) DeHart of Des Moines, Melrose W. DeHart III (and wife Patricia) of Renton, Wash.; and daughters Elizabeth of Lacey, Wash.; Jeanette (and husband Lanny) of Villa Rica, Ga.; step-sister JoAnne of Otis Orchards, Wash.; brother Donald (and wife Jeannie) Carpenter; nephew Gary (and wife Nancy) Carpenter; niece Robin Carpenter; and grandniece Ronna (and husband Greg) Craig all of Juneau; 13 grandchildren, 2 great-grandnephews and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial will take place at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Alaska Memorial Park in Juneau.

Charles H. Parr

Seasonal Juneau resident Charles "Charlie" H. Parr died March 23, 2000, in his home in Fairbanks.

He was born Jan. 19, 1918, in Mobile, Ala. A combat veteran of World War II and career infantry officer, Parr brought his family to Alaska when he retired in 1961. He was a scholar and an educator at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and had a long career in public service. He was a member of the Fairbanks assembly for two years and a state legislator for eight years. He also served on a number of statewide boards.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years Karen, sons Chip (and wife Sandy) of Juneau and Charlie (and wife Marilyn) of Fairbanks, daughter Maria Sample (and husband Roger) of South Carolina and daughter Perri Carlson (and husband Vern) of Fairbanks; brother Hubert Parr, Jr. of Florida, sister Marion Gooch of Alabama; nine grandchildren including Jesse, Kari and Suzanne Parr of Juneau, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. April 9 at Alaskaland Civic Center in Fairbanks.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be sent to the Charles H. Parr Memorial Fund, University of Alaska Foundation, 910 Yukon Drive, Suite 206, P.O. Box 5080, Fairbanks, Alaska, 99775-5080.

Frances J. Edgecomb

Longtime Alaska resident Frances J. Edgecomb died June 19, 2000, in her home in Sitka.

She was born Nov. 16, 1915, near Lynden, Wash.

She moved to Pelican in 1948 where she met and married Bill Edgecomb. The couple spent the next decade running several businesses in Pelican including a restaurant, The Fiddlers' Green cookhouse, and Franny & Bill's, a soda fountain and variety store where her milkshakes were famous. The family moved in 1959 to Sitka, where she worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 17 years. After her retirement, she and her husband bought Sitka Arts and Crafts and changed the name to Edgecombs' Arts and Crafts. They sold the store in 1987.

After her husband's death in 1992, she kept busy with gardening and community service. She read to children, participated in committees on aging and volunteered at Sheldon Jackson Museum. She also enjoyed painting, carving and was an avid card player.

She is survived by her daughter Alice May (and husband Jon Wolcott) of Juneau; granddaughter Billie Otto (and husband Steve) of Tacoma, Wash.; grandson Jim Wolcott (and wife Deb) of Santa Cruz, Calif.; two great-grandchildren and many friends.

Graveside services were held on June 26 at Sitka Memorial Park.

Frederick W. Griffin

Juneau Resident Frederick ``Freddie" William Griffin died Feb. 27, 2000, of natural causes in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska.

He was born March 21, 1948, in Vancouver, British Columbia. Griffin was a teamster for Local 959 for more than 25 years and worked as a truck driver for several local construction companies. He attended Juneau-Douglas High School and served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Most recently, Griffin was employed as a seasonal tour and school bus driver.

Griffin enjoyed spending time with his children playing softball, biking, fishing and sledding as well as spending time with his friends at Donna's Restaurant.

He was preceded in death by his mother Viola Griffin, his brother Leroy Griffin and his sister Beverly Griffin.

He is survived by his son Ryan Griffin, daughter Heather Griffin, former wife Deborah Martin, her son Jon Martin, brother Gordon Griffin (and wife Ginger), niece Cindy and nephew Russell Griffin, all of Juneau; his sister Barbara of Oregon, his uncle Harry of Canada and his father Gordon Griffin of Mosquito Lake, Alaska.

In lieu of flowers, the family has established a trust fund for the children.

The deceased was cremated at the Alaskan Memorial Park in Juneau and a celebration of his life will be announced at a later date.

Craig Allen Kirk

Juneau resident Craig Allen Kirk died Sept. 8, 2000, in Juneau at Bartlett Regional Hospital.

He was born Nov. 5, 1952. His family resided in Vernon, Ohio. He spent his childhood in Vernon and graduated from Mt. Vernon High School. He joined the Air Force in 1971, and moved to Ft. Meyers, Fla. He moved to Juneau in 1997 and worked in retail management.

He is preceded in death by his father Ivan S. Kirk, stepmother, Laura Rose Kirk, and his brother and sister.

He is survived by his mother Valeta Pratt of Douglas, his brother Michael Lynn Kirk, his sister Christina Marie Kirk and a niece, all of Cape Coral, Fla.

Services will be held 1 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Alaska Mortuary.

Elisabeth McLaren Nye

Juneau resident Elisabeth ``Lis" McLaren Nye, 50, died of exposure April 3 in Juneau.

She was born April 3, 1950, in Pocatello, Idaho. She studied French in Geneva, Switzerland. After being awarded an academic scholarship, she attended Colorado Women's College. She received her teaching certificate from Long Beach State College in California.

She first visited Juneau in 1968 as the maid of honor in her sister's wedding. After graduating from college, she moved to Juneau in 1975 and worked at Alaska Fish and Wildlife, the Alaska State Museum and Alaska Airlines. She married her high school sweetheart in 1979 and gave birth to their son in 1982. While living in Seattle, she worked for Boeing, owned and operated her own business and later worked in a Montessori school. In 1989, she moved to Long Beach, Calif. In 1990, she moved to Fairbanks, where she assisted in the birth and care of her newborn and grade school nieces. In 1991, she returned to Long Beach until her father's death in 1994. In 1995 she and her mother moved to Juneau to join her sister Marcia and family.

Her devotion to her son and ongoing love for family focused her, her family said. Skiing, camping at the ocean and in the rainforest were her loves - in addition to music, Juneau's mountains and family. She will be most remembered for her incredible character, her quick wit, her sharp memory, and her sweet and gentle spirit, her family said.

She was preceded in death by her father, Walter Roy Nye.

She is survived by her son, Jan Marcus Noorda, 17, and his father, Jan R. Noorda, both of Seattle; her mother, Nora Marcia Nye; her brother, W. Marcus W. Nye (and his wife, Eva) of Pocatello, Idaho; her sister, Marcia Nye (and her husband, Mark Badger); nephew, D. Justin McLaren Freer (and his wife, Stephanie) of Silver Springs, Md.; nieces Ashley, Birch and Claire Badger of Juneau.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., Thursday at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, followed by a gathering in the adjoining building, McPhetres Hall. A memorial college trust fund has been established in her name for her son at the Alaska State Employees Credit Union.

Bruce Alan Bulkley

Lifelong Alaskan and former Juneau resident Bruce Alan Bulkley died July 2, 2000, in Anchorage.

He was born July 23, 1972, in Ekwok, Bristol Bay and adopted in Juneau.

He attended Juneau public schools and lived in the capital city until 1991, when he moved to Anchorage. He worked for Airborne Express for several years.

He enjoyed basketball, baseball, skiing, in-line skating and running. He was active in Boy Scouts, accompanied Floyd Dryden Middle School's choir and was his church's priesthood meeting pianist. He was a hard worker and enjoyed physical work.

At the age of 10, Bulkley saved his 2-year-old nephew from drowning in a swift river's undertow, his family said.

He is survived by his parents Jess and Shirleen Bulkley of Redmond, Ore.; sisters Lori Tupou and Tawna Doake of Juneau, Marci Wallace of Victoria, Texas; brother Dallin Bulkley and grandmother Vione Stolar of Redmond, Ore.; wife Sonya Lucas Bulkley of Anchorage and numerous nephews and nieces.

A funeral service was held today at 11 a.m., at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel in Juneau.
