Dovie Deautry (Howath) Beckton

Juneau resident Dovie Deautry (Howath) Beckton died June 2, 2000, at Saint Ann's Care Center in Juneau.

She was born July 30, 1911, in Washington, Okla., to William Harvey and Idabelle (Smith) Howarth. Her heritage was Choctaw Indian, and her family wrote that she told her grandchildren stories about her grandfather fighting with Geronimo. She worked as a cook and a seamstress, and ran and owned several restaurants in California and Arizona. She moved to Juneau in April 1998.

She is survived by her children Valeta R. Pratt of Douglas, Vera Robertson of California, Louis Lowrance of Washington and James Lowrance of Arizona; grandchildren Craig Kirk of Douglas, Michael Kirk of Florida and numerous other relations.

Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. today at St. Ann's Care Center. Memorials and flowers may be sent to St. Ann's 411 S. 6th, Juneau, 99801.

Everett P. "Shorty" Oliver

Longtime Juneau resident Everett ``Shorty" Oliver died on April 15, 2000, in Sequim, Wash., surrounded by his family.

He was born April 22, 1929, in Collins, Ga., to Earl and Era Oliver. Oliver and his family moved to Juneau in 1974.

An officer with the U.S. Coast Guard, Oliver retired from service as a master chief petty officer in 1978. The Vietnam veteran and his wife, Evelyn, also owned Oliver's Trophy and Engraving for almost two decades. The couple retired to Sequim in 1996.

Oliver played a pivotal role in all of the veterans' groups in Juneau. He was a life member and past commander of the American Legion Auke Bay Post 25 and the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post. He was also state commander of the American Legion and active in the Disabled American Veterans Associations.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 124, Elks Lodge 420, the Glacier Valley Rotary Club and the Juneau Chamber of Commerce.

He was preceded in death by his father.

He is survived by his wife Evelyn of Sequim, Wash.; sons Earl Oliver of Medford, Ore., and Lynn Oliver of Sequim, Wash.; daughter Lori Oliver-Hudak of Seattle, grandsons Chris Oliver of Scappose, Ore., and Ben Oliver of Clackamas, Ore.; great-grandson Josiah of Scappose, Ore.; his mother Ora Oliver, brothers Kelvin and Tommy and sister Edna Slade, all of Middlebury, Fla.

Services will be held on May 5, 2000, at 1:30 p.m., at the Dungeness Community Church in Sequim, Wash., followed by a private burial at Tahoma National Cemetery.

A memorial bench will be placed under the flagpole of the veterans section of the Alaskan Memorial Park and Mortuary in Juneau. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Shorty Oliver Memorial, American Legion Auke Bay Post 25, Box 210131, Auke Bay, Alaska, 99821.

Francis `Frank' Harrell

Former Juneau resident Francis ``Frank" Harrell died May 19, 2000, in his home in Plant City, Fla.

He was born Dec. 25, 1931, in Detroit, Mich.

The retired U.S. Coast Guard Commander served in Juneau from 1975 until 1981. After his retirement from the Coast Guard, Harrell worked as a letter carrier for the Postal Service.

He was a member of the Retired Officers Association and the past secretary of the National Association of Letter Carriers.

He was survived by his wife Mary Lee Harrell and daughter Helen Harrell Howard of Plant City, Fla.; son John Olin Harrell of Texas; brother Alan R. Harrell; sisters Mary Jeanne Gilbert and Ruth Miller all of Lakeland, Fla.; Patty Harrington of North Carolina; and grandchildren Christy and Charlie Howard of Juneau.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 23, 2000, at St. Clement Catholic Church in Florida.

Mary Joanne Johnson

Hoonah resident Mary Joanne Johnson died May 19, 2000, in Juneau.

She was born Nov. 30, 1912, in Hoonah.

She worked in the Hoonah Cannery along with other canneries and owned Mary's Ice Cream Parlor in Hoonah.

She was a member of the Lady's Lions Club and a lifetime member of ANS Camp 12. She and her husband donated the land for the William and Mary Johnson Youth Center in Hoonah. She loved children and enjoyed spending time with her extended family.

She was preceded in death by her husband William S. Johnson.

She is survived by her sisters Eva Davis and Jennie Lindoff and brother Wilbur (Jumbo) James, all of Hoonah; nieces and nephews Mary Joanne Felipe, Wilbur Knudson, Ken Willard Jr., Wilbur (Jumbo) James. Jr. and Mary Kathass of Juneau; Celeste Willard and Doreen Westom of Seattle; Lillian James, Thomas James, Cathy Lindoff and Steven Lindoff of Hoonah; Thomas Bell, John Bell and David Bell of Anchorage; and many grandnieces and nephews and great-grandnieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held today at Alaska Memorial Park.

Esther J. Nickel

Former Juneau resident Esther J. Nickel died May 17, 2000, in Bethel Health Care Centre, in Kansas.

She was born June 9, 1937, in Enid, Okla.

She and her husband, Samuel Nickel, moved to Juneau in 1963. She was a homemaker and a member of the Auke Bay Bible Church. After her husband's death in 1988, she moved to Newton, Kan. Nickel enjoyed music and taught Sunday school for many years.

She is survived by sons Galen and Jerrel Nickel of Snohomish, Wash.; daughter Shelly Roth of Lodi, Wis.; brothers Adolph Koehn of Newton, Kan.; Martin Koehn of Rio Linda, Calif.; and Abner Koehn of Jackson, Tenn.; and sister Dahna Regier of Elbing, Kan.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., on May 24, 2000, at the Newton Bible Church in Newton, Kan.

Francis W. Stokes

Longtime Alaska resident Francis W. Stokes died May 28, 2000, in his home in Auburn, Wash., from cancer.

He was born on Aug. 17, 1922, in Washington, D.C.

He served as a medical corpsman during World War II, and moved to Alaska as a Seventh-day Adventist missionary in 1947. He lived in Juneau from 1958 until 1970 where he worked for the federal government as a fish and wildlife professional. He remained a federal employee after moving to Anchorage in 1973. He also worked for the Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. and at the Alaska Mission of Seventh-day Adventists. He retired to Kent, Wash., in 1992.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Elvira, and their son Bob Stokes.

He is survived by his wife Jewel Dean Herbrandson Stokes of Kent, Wash.; children Kathy (and husband Norm) Gibbard of Ariz.; Ken Stokes of Hawaii; Bonnie (and husband Bill) Jermain of Anchorage; Bill (and wife Elly) Stokes of California; grandchildren Jason and Joli Stokes of Minnesota; Cable Stokes of Iowa; Donald and Tony Stokes of California; great-grandchildren Sydney and Abigail Stokes of Minnesota; and identical twin brother and lifetime friend Charles (and wife Annie) Stokes of Connecticut.

He was buried today in a private ceremony at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations be made to the Adventist Worth Student Fund, c/o The Kent Seventh-day Adventist Church, 25213 116th Avenue. S.E., Kent, Wash., 98031.

Julie Craft

Juneau resident Julie Craft died Feb. 5, 2000, at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, after a battle with ovarian cancer.

She was born Aug. 2, 1939, in Michigan.

She was preceded in death by her father-in-law Leonard I. Craft.

She is survived by her husband John L. Craft of Juneau, her son and daughter Michael and Lisa Craft of Fairbanks, grandchildren Chris and Megan Craft of Phoenix, Ariz., Michael Dahl, Amber and Garrett Gibbons of Fairbanks, her mother-in-law Winnie I. Craft of Lawton, Okla., sister-in-law Yerba Esau of St. Louis, Mo., and many nieces and nephews.

Her family wrote that she was an amazingly strong woman with a great sense of humor.

A wake will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday Feb. 15, at the Lucky Lady.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Gilda Radner Ovarian Cancer Registry, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Elm and Carlton Streets, Buffalo, N.Y., 14263.

Bruce Norman Grant

Juneau resident Bruce Norman Grant died Feb. 8, 2000, in Juneau.

He was born Dec. 6, 1945, in El Paso, Texas. He moved to Juneau in August 1989. He was self-employed as an electronics technician.

He is survived by his brothers Sidney W. Grant of Portland, Ore., Richard Grant of Los Angles, Calif., and Mark E. Grant of Phoenix, Ariz., and his sisters Toni Musselman, Fran Nash and Leslie Enoz of Phoenix.

Services will be announced at a later date.

Evelyn V. Arthur

Juneau resident Evelyn V. Arthur died Oct. 9, 2000, at the Pioneers' Home in Juneau. She was 96.

She was born May 16, 1904, in Columbia, S.C., the eldest of five children. Her early years were spent in South Carolina, Oklahoma and North Carolina. She moved to New York in the late 1920s to obtain employment as an infant nurse. After retiring, she and her sister Edith shared an apartment in Mt. Vernon, N.Y., until the early 1990s, when her niece, Nancy Frawley, moved them to Juneau.

After a short stay with Nancy, she moved to an apartment at Mountain View. In 1997 she moved to the Pioneers' Home in Sitka, and in 1998 moved to the Pioneers' Home in Juneau.

Her hobby was sewing. She loved sing-a-longs and the ice cream socials at the Pioneers' Home.

A memorial service was held at the Pioneers' Home.

George Jackson

Lifelong Juneau resident George Jackson died March 21, 2000.

He was born Feb. 2, 1917, to James and Cora Jackson of Tee Harbor. Jackson was a fisherman and served during World War II in the U.S. Army Marine Transport division.

He is survived by his sisters Mary King of North Carolina, Sally Burattin Niece of Anchorage, Cora Netzel Niece of Wisconsin, Jeanette Delfay of Washington; nephews Edward Baker of Haines, Jay Baker of Oregon, Joe Baker of Wisconsin, Jerry Baker of North Carolina; and adopted niece Berniece Trego and family.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., March 27, 2000, at the ANB Hall in Juneau.

Pallbearers will be Timothy Lindoff, Dave Trego, Valintino Burattin, Charlie Abbott, Leroy Marvin and John Shorty.

Jeffery Alan Bjerkeset

Former Juneau resident Jeffrey Alan Bjerkeset died March 15, 2000, in his home in Las Vegas.

He was born Aug. 15, 1960, in Cheyenne, Wyo., and moved to Juneau in 1976. He worked for the state of Alaska, and at Kmart in the evenings. Most recently he was employed as a CAD draftsman.

He enjoyed fishing, darts, billiards and photography, and was a member of the Juneau Moose Lodge. He moved to Las Vegas in 1996.

He is survived by his wife Debbie, mother Judy Dougherty; father Odel Bjerkeset; stepdaughter Donna (and husband Tony) Gonzales, granddaughter Stephanie, all of Las Vegas; his brothers Jody (and wife Tracy) Bjerkeset, Joel (and wife Shanlee) Bjerkeset of Juneau, Jason Bjerkeset (and daughter Jessica) of Portland, Ore.; grandmother Nadine Richardson of Minnesota; half-brother Clint (and wife Julie) Marsh, and nephews Justin and Jordan of Minnesota.

Services were held on March 20, 2000, in Las Vegas.
