Robert D. 'Bob' Arnold

Former Juneau resident Robert D. "Bob" Arnold, 71, died Jan. 11, 2004, at his home in Olympia, Wash.

He was born June 11, 1932, in Guthrie, Okla. He was the principal author of the 1974 book, "Alaska Native Land Claims, " but his writings and activities related to Native issues reach back to 1968.

He was a deputy commissioner of the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, and before that, he had been a senior manager with the Bureau of Land Management. His earlier service with the state was as executive director of the Alaska Centennial Commission and executive director of the Alaska Educational Broadcasting Commission. In the early 1970s, he was a member of the Anchorage School Board, and served on a number of civic commissions. In 1987, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he was on the staff of the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs and a director of a research institute at George Washington University. He moved to Olympia after retiring in 1996.

He is survived by his wife, Ann, of Olympia; daughters, Catherine of Waianae, Hawaii, Elizabeth of Anchorage, Susan Dolan of Bend, Ore., and Mary of Olympia; sons, Matthew of Las Vegas, John of Eugene, Ore.; seven grandchildren; and sister, Joyce Munson of Anchorage.

No service is planned.

Ina Vaye Williamson

Former longtime Juneau resident Ina Vaye Williamson, 68, died Sept. 6, 2003, at her home in Kihei, Hawaii, surrounded by family and friends.

She was born Feb. 15, 1935, in Beaverton, Ore., to Arta and Stephen Herrington. The Herrington family lived on a small farm near Beaverton where Williamson's brother, Kevin, continues to reside with his family.

She married James Williamson in 1952. In 1956, they moved to Williamson Brothers Logging camp near Ketchikan. Logging brought the family to Juneau in 1959. In 1964, Ina and Jim started Williamson Construction Co. The company built many residential homes and apartments in the Villa de Vista and Riverdale Heights subdivisions and worked on various other construction projects in and about Juneau. She moved to the family vacation home in Kihei, Hawaii, in 1982, where she enjoyed "paradise on Earth." She continued her interest in building planning, remodeling and construction in Kihei.

Her family said she pursued her talent in art by drawing still lifes and portraits, and expressed herself through her poetry, as her father had. Although her physical capabilities became limited, she never lost her mental alertness and interest in all of life's opportunities. She loved gardening until her health would no longer allow her to mingle with the soil, but she did enjoy the fragrances of her gardens throughout the remainder of her life. Her family said she had a deep, bonding respect for the spiritual allure of the Hawaiian people, culture and music. In Hawaii she explored the teachings of spiritual life beyond the physical, gaining a deep respect for natural healing, Buddhism and spiritual communication. She generously shared her knowledge with others and never lost her ability to learn from all those she met on her path here on Earth. "She was a gracious lady, " her family said.

She was preceded in death by her parents, infant son, Allan James, and sister, Loveta "Veta" Polette.

She is survived by her sons, Ken (Terry Johnson) Williamson, Kurt (Nancy) Williamson of Juneau, and Kevin Williamson of Kenai; daughters, Kathy Williamson of Juneau and Karen (David Fonseca) Williamson of Kihei, Hawaii; grandchildren, Kris Williamson of Tigard, Ore., Ky and Keri Williamson, Sion Colmus of Juneau, Shayana Williamson of Honolulu, Kawika Fonseca of Kihei, Hawaii, Yvonna Douglas of Ambler and Kristin Williamson of Kenai; sisters, Moronia "Mona" (John) Johnson of Phoenix, Ariz., Julene "Julie" Lee of Portland, Ore., brother, Kevin (Linda) Williamson of Beaverton, Ore. and numerous nieces and nephews.

Raymond Anthony Bradley Jr.

Raymond Anthony Bradley Jr., 33, died April 27, 2004, in Juneau.

Bradley was born April 27, 1971, in Honolulu. He attended schools in Juneau, where he lived for 22 years. He was of Hawaiian and Tlingit ancestry, with the Tlingit name Til'wan of the Yan Ye-dei Wolf Clan, Hit'tlein House of the Taku River Tribe.

He was a sports enthusiast who played softball and volleyball, for which he also refereed. He played in the Juneau Youth Football League and later coached in the organization. He spent time with numerous Hawaiian relatives and enjoyed water sports including reef surfing, diving and body surfing.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Chrysantha Bradley.

He is survived by his father, Ray Bradley, and mother, Christina Bradley of Juneau; two brothers, Alika Bradley of Juneau and Greg Bradley of Kent, Wash.; uncles Roy (Charla) and Matthew Bradley of Missouri, Tim (Josephine) Bradley of Hawaii, Joseph, Peter and John (Anjelica) Castillo, all of Juneau; aunts, Robbin Carter of Missouri, Esther Castillo of Eagle River, Gloria Castillo, Sue (Wes) Oliva, Lillian Lundy and Theodora Castillo (Dale Bontraeger), all of Juneau; and great-aunts, Sue Kahklen of Juneau, and Mary Cornell of Ketchikan.

A celebration of life is planned for 5:30 p.m. May 12 at the T&H Community Building, 3235 Hospital Dr., Juneau.

Steven Victor Hotch

Juneau resident Steven Victor Hotch, 86, died Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, in Juneau.

He was born Feb. 18, 1917, at the Haines Mission in Haines. He lived in Haines, Klukwan and in Juneau. He was a former gillnetter and an iron ore worker. He was founder of Klukwan Inc., a basketball coach, parole officer, Klukwan ANB, IRA officer and Grand Camp ANB President.

He was preceded in death by sons, Steven Hotch, Jr., and Sambo Hotch; daughters, Josephine Peters and Kahone Otten; and grandchildren, Walter Peters and Lawrence Peters.

He is survived by his wife, Esther Hotch of Klukwan; brother, Joe Hotch of Haines; sisters, Katherine Shirley of California and Ruth Lindoff of Hoonah; daughters, Ethel Aquilar of California, Louise Smith of Haines, Dorothy Carter of Oregon, Debbie Montgomery of Anchor Point, and Christine Sweet of Klukwan; sons, William Hotch, Sr. of Klukwan, Donald Hotch, Sr. of Klukwan; 42 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-grandchild.

An open casket visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Alaska Memorial Park and Mortuary, 3839 Riverside Drive, Juneau. An ANB memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, in Klukwan.

Beverly Freese

Former Juneau resident Beverly Freese, 55, died Nov. 23, 2003, at her home near Mt. Shasta, Calif.

She was born Mar. 20, 1948, in Louisville, Ky., to Hugh Woods, who died in 1997, and Sarah Woods, still living in Louisville, Ky. She was a dolphin trainer, zookeeper, flight attendant and fire lookout. She lived in Juneau for 20 years, where she owned a pet store and worked for Alaska Airlines as an agent.

"Her favorite hobby was making the world a more beautiful place, " said family members. "She was known for being a provider of love to all."

She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Lincoln Freese of Mt. Shasta, Calif.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gordon and Susan Cook of Virginia Beach, Va.; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Freese of Ft. Meyers, Fla.; nephews, Todd Cook of Virginia Beach, Va., Lance Cook of Clearwater, Fla., and Brooks Cook of Clearwater, Fla.; and niece, Jennifer Cook of Virginia Beach, Va.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Siskiyou Humane Society, 1208 N. Mt. Shasta Blvd., Mt. Shasta, CA 96067.

Edwin James Brummeler

Juneau Pioneers' Home resident Edwin James Brummeler, 84, died Feb. 20, 2004, after a short illness.

He was born May 28, 1919, in Riverside, Calif. After graduation from Whittier College in 1940 with a degree in sociology, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard. Shortly after that, he married his college sweetheart, Dorothy Felice Otis. He spent 23 years in the Coast Guard, retiring in 1964 with the rank of commander. He served in World War II and the Korean War. He worked for the Alaska ferry system each summer for a number of years, retiring completely in the early 1990s.

His family said he was "never completely happy on land, Ed's real love was the sea. He loved to fish for marlin off the coasts of San Diego and Baja, Calif. He also loved to fish for salmon and halibut here in Juneau."

He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy and sister Ada.

He is survived by his daughters, Dorothy (Lee) Hurley, Nancy (Freddie) Sloan, and Patty Britza in Juneau; sister, Jean of San Bernardino, Calif.; grandchildren, Adam (Michelle), Anne (Bill), Christine, Caroline and Kaitlin of Juneau, Melissa of Oregon, and Tara (Mark) of Georgia; great-granddaughter, Sabrina; and great-grandson, Stiles.

A remembrance service was held recently at the Juneau Pioneers' Home. Per his wishes, his body was cremated and his ashes will be scattered at sea.

Beverly Christensen

Beverly Ruth Christensen died Mar. 5, 2004. She was born June 29, 1932. Wife of Albert L. Christensen, she was mother to Don Fowler of Pendleton, Ore., Steve Allen and Ray Allen of Portland, and Carl Christensen and Russell Christensen of Juneau. She had 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was also a proud World Vision sponsor of two girls who live in India.

She was born in Pendleton and lived in Nehalem, Ore., (where she attended high school), Portland, Eugene, Ore., (where she graduated from Lane Community College), Anchorage and Juneau (where she has lived for the past three decades with Al, her husband of 34 years). She returned to Oregon in October 2003 for rehabilitation due to medical complications, following a successful cancer surgery two and a half years earlier.

Her family said, "The sights and sounds of her life have been a variegated quilt of interests including those of an accomplished artist, a motorcycle racer, nightclub singer, dental assistant, early childhood educator and co-manager of Southeast Interiors in Alaska. She has always been deeply interested in nature, interpersonal relationships, cultural traditions and family. Special to her were the ocean, seagulls, good movies, roses and ladybugs."

Family members also said, "She is forever loved and missed."

She was preceded in death by her parents, Oras and Ruby Frazier Jennings; aunt-step-mother, Wilma Jennings; and brothers, Gib and Richard Jennings.

She is survived by her siblings, Ray Jennings of Westwood, Calif., Ron Jennings of Chico, Calif., and Nancy Middlebrook of Milwaukie, Ore.; aunts, Opal, Thelma, Vera and Marion; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She will be remembered with services and a reception at 1 p.m. March 13 at Mt. Scott Funeral Home in Portland. There will be a memorial service on March 20 in Juneau. Contributions to the American Cancer Society are appreciated.

Carol Lee Morris

Juneau resident Carol Lee Morris, 49, died March 7, 2004, of a heart attack.

She was born April 28, 1954, in Juneau to Robert Lee and Dorothy Parish. She lived in Minnesota and Washington but returned to Juneau to be near her family.

She is survived by her mother, Dorothy of Juneau; son, Jake Morris of Juneau; daughters, Jacylyn Morris of Juneau and Carrie and Tina Kegg of Onamia, Minn.; four grandchildren; five brothers and five sisters.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. March 11 at the ANB Hall.

Frank P. Mercer

Former Juneau and longtime Anchorage resident Frank P. Mercer, 85, died Jan. 8, 2004, at the Santo Nino Home in Anchorage.

He was born Dec. 28, 1918, in Juneau to Charles and Elsie (Mercer) Bobb. He was of the Raven moiety of the T'aakdeintaan clan and from the Baby Sockeye house of Hoonah. His Tlingit name was K'aa L'ei. He was raised by his grandparents, Frank and Sally Mercer.

He was educated in Juneau and attended Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka. He held numerous jobs in commercial fishing and drove a van for the handicapped in Anchorage. He was featured in the award-winning film "Kusah Hakwaan." He was a carver and an artist, played the trumpet and piano, and enjoyed traveling and sightseeing.

His family said he will be remembered for his kind, patient nature. They said he was proud of his culture and often shared his knowledge of the Tlingit culture with various schools.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Irene Culver.

He is survived by his sisters, Frances Marvin of Juneau, Florence Bennett of Hoonah; nephews Carl Marvin Jr., Reginald Marvin, and Wallace Marvin of Juneau, George Marvin and Lawrence Marvin of Anchorage, Richard Mercer of Anchorage, Donald Marvin of Klawock, Terry and Charles Smith of Texas; nieces Francine and Colleen Mercer of Juneau, Beverly Duguqua and Charlotte Duncan of Anchorage, Paula Funicelli of Texas; and numerous relatives throughout the state.

Honorary pallbearers included Raymond Sensmeier, Raymond Duguqua, Janet Read, Mabel Lawrence, Harvey and Richard Marvin, Edwin Mercer Jr., Violet James, Eva Sensmeier, and Ernie Hillman.

Pallbearers included Jeremy S. Marvin, Herman James, Martin Sensmeier, John Buller, Matthew Anderstrom, Eric Anderstrom and Joe Johnson.

Funeral and burial services were held Jan. 13 at the Evergreen Memorial Chapel and at the Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery. Services were officiated by his nephew, Richard Mercer.

James 'Pat' Orme

Lifetime Juneau resident James "Pat" Orme, 58, died April 18, 2004, at Wildflower Court in Juneau.

He was born June 20, 1945, in Juneau and is most well known in the community as one of the founding owners of Douglas Trucking.

His family said he will be remembered for his sense of humor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Jesse Orme, owners of Orme Transfer Company.

He is survived by his daughter, Heidi Glasen; grandchildren, Jacob and Lynnea; sister, Kathy (Ron) Hildre; nephew, Jim Hildre and family, Savannah and Colin; aunt, Eva Mackey; cousins Joanne Wate and Dennis Mackey of California, Pat, Steve and Jack Phillips of Oregon, Bill (Myrna) Orme and family of Seattle; and numerous friends and coworkers.

All family and friends are invited to a memorial gathering at 4:30 p.m. May 4 at Parkshore Clubhouse in Juneau.

Leona Gran

Juneau resident Leona Gran, 88, died April 14, 2004, at Bartlett Regional Hospital in Juneau after an illness resulting from complications of her stroke three years ago.

She was born July 11, 1916, in Cherry Grove, Ore. She completed her schooling, attended business college and then married Edward Kasnick in 1936 in Oregon. They lived in various towns in northwest Oregon until they moved to Juneau. Leona drove the Alcan by herself with four children, ages 18 to 2 years, arriving in Juneau in June of 1956. She worked as a bookkeeper for the Bureau of Mines, St. Ann's Hospital, the Auke Bay Lab and subsequently purchased The Hamlet dress shop and, finally, The Driftwood Lodge, which she owned and operated for 25 years with her family. After Ed Kasnick's death in 1968 she married Vernon Gran in 1972.

Her family said she especially loved fishing, camping and picnicking with her family. She participated in sports in her youth and was an avid sports fan in her later years. She took great pleasure from lunches with the seniors in Douglas and her volunteer sewing sessions for the Pioneers' Home.

She is preceded in death by husbands, Edward William Kasnick and Vernon Gran; son, Guy Edward Kasnick; and granddaughter, Karinna Caples.

She is survived by her son, Rick (Rachel) Kasnick; daughters, Shirley (Larry) Matheny, Kathy Wilson, and Karen (Paul) Dillon; grandchildren, Edward, Curtis and Greg Birchell, Darci Caples, Kara Vergo, Lori Perkins, Eric Kasnick, Trenton and Kevin Wilson, Zachary, Callahan and Heather Dillon, Tion and Rory Kasnick, Branda Harper; and 28 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Curt and Ed Birchell, Eric Kasnick, Chuck Trierschield, Trent and Kevin Wilson, Callahan Dillon and Tion and Rory Kasnick.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 20 at St. Paul's Catholic Church. Family and friends are invited to a reception after the services at Rick Kasnick's house at 3960 Glacier Highway.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Leona Gran to St. Jude Hospital, Attn: Memorial Dept., 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
