Aaron L. 'Cutty' Sarks

Aaron L. 'Cutty' Sarks died Sunday, March 28, 2004, at St. Luke's Hospital in Phoenix. He was 73.

Services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, at College Heights Baptist Church on Kalifornsky Beach Road. His ashes will be laid to rest with his wife and in the pasture where his children and grandchildren ride their horses.

Mr. Sarks was born and raised in Illinois. He started driving trucks at age 14 to help his parents with income for the farm. He married Louise Jackson at age 16. They farmed for a while and started a family.

Trucking was in Mr. Sarks' blood. The couple followed the oilfield industry from Montana to Alaska in 1966, landing in Fairbanks working for Mukluk Freight Lines. They then moved to Kenai in 1969, where Mr. Sarks worked for Mukluk and Kodiak Oilfield Haulers.

Mr. Sarks and several of his oilfield friends started Hustler's Trucking in the 1980s in the height of the oilfield rush.

Later in life, Mr. Sarks found retirement an enjoyment, to his own surprise. He and his wife spent several winters in Las Vegas and summers in Alaska, where they spent time with their children and grandchildren, who enjoyed riding and competing on the Appaloosa horses Mr. Sarks helped raise.

When Mrs. Sarks died of cancer in 1994, Mr. Sarks ventured further south and landed in Eloy, Ariz. There, he tinkered with his home and garden and enjoyed competitive Yahtzee games with his many friends. He still drove to Alaska in the spring to enjoy his family and friends. Due to his health, he was unable to make the trip the last few years.

"Cutty was a man of his word and a handshake meant the world to him, " his family said. "He always had a soft spot for critters of any kind, loved classic country music, a good fittin' Stetson cowboy hat and hot coffee conversations.

"He had great pride and love for his kids and grandkids and made sure they knew it. He was in fact their hero. He had an inspiring walk with the Lord in the last few years. He truly had found peace."

Mr. Sarks was preceded in death by his wife, Louise.

He is survived by his children, Pam Rel of Casa Grande, Ariz., Debra and Richard Scott of Blountville, Tenn., Paul and Garnet Sarks of Kenai and Beth and Glenn Fowler of Soldotna; grandchildren, Chris and Mary Zoda, Jessica Geske, DeAnna and Mark Hinkle, Erin Sarks, Daniel McCauliffe, Luke and Brock Sarks and Chelsey, Mellissa and Jake Fowler; and great-grandchildren, Tim, Kelcei, Jaryn, Rebecca, Crystal, Heidi, Kendra and Laynee Beth.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Soldotna Equestrian Association, P.O. Box 4408, Soldotna, AK 99669 or to the church or charity of the donor's choice.
