Justlie J. Paneak
Fairbanks, Alaska

Fairbanks resident, Justlie Jenny Paneak, died on Monday, January 7th, 2002, at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.

She was 39.

Jenny was born on June 17th, 1962, in Anaktuvuk Pass.

She graduated from Nunamuit High School in Anaktuvuk Pass, and she attended college in both Barrow and Fairbanks.

She was the former curator at the Simon Paneak Museum in Anaktuvuk Pass.

Jenny was a member of the Presbyterian Church; she enjoyed making Eskimo dolls, sewing, hunting, fishing, camping and trapping.

She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and all who knew her.

Jenny was preceded in death by her father, Simon Paneak; her mother, Susie Paneak; and her brother, Robert Paneak.

She is survived by her sons Simon, Kyle and Robert and her daughters Stacy & Amanda.

Jenny is also survived by her sister Mabel (& Bernie) Burris of Fairbanks; her brother, Roosevelt (& Beth) Paneak of Fairbanks; her brothers, Raymond George Allen Paneak & Harold Paneak of Anaktuvuk Pass; her nieces & nephews: Susie, Terry, Tim, Mary & Larry (& Pearl) Burris; Louise Yarde; Vicky & William Raymond Monahan; Mickey Paneak; Lela Ahgook, Mark Morry, Riley Morry, Anna Morry, Susan Hugo, Mary Duffy; Bruce (& Jessica) Paneak of Pierre, SD; James Paneak & Miriam Paneak both of Fairbanks.

Jenny is also survived by many other loving relatives and friends to numerous to name.

Funeral Services were held Saturday, January 12th, 2002, at the Chapel in the Mountains in Anaktuvuk Pass.

A visitation was held prior to the funeral.

Graveside services followed at the Anaktuvuk Pass Cemetery. Pastor James Nageak officiated.

Daniel Andolina
Fairbanks, Alaska & Buffalo, New York

North Pole resident Daniel Andolina, 48, died unexpectedly at his home on Jan. 27, 2002, from congestive heart failure.

Daniel was born March 28, 1953, to Russell and Rose (Along) Andolina in Buffalo, N.Y. where he was raised and graduated from Grover Cleveland High School.

As a young man in New York, Daniel once saved a woman from drowning, for which he was later honored.

Daniel had made Alaska his home on Sept. 21, 1991, when he moved here with his wife Violet.

He was employed as a woodworker in transportation on Eielson Air Force Base.

He had a deep love for his Air Force career from which he retired as master sergeant on Dec. 31, 1993.

Daniel was very happy to continue working as civilian personnel at the same shop where he had served his last years of active duty before retiring.

His coworkers often called him "Mr. A." He was known for his love of sales and shopping.

Daniel had served as the president of the Booster Club; he once received the civilian personnel employee for the quarter award and employee of the year award, both from the Air Force, and was nominated for civilian personnel employee of the Air Force (nationwide).

Daniel loved Alaska and had enjoyed hunting, fishing and some trapping.

Daniel was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Patrick and Paul Andolina.

He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Violet; daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Ron, and Tina and Darrin; son Daniel Andolina; stepson Adrian Denson; grandchildren, Ronnie, Sierra, Katie and Devin; brothers and sisters-in-law, Anthony and Lucille Andolina and Russell and Millie Andolina; sister-in-law Gail Andolina; sisters and brothers-in-law, Roseanne and Jim and Lydia and Jimmy; and many nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law; and close friend Bear.

Memorial services were held Friday, Feb. 1, at Fairbanks Funeral Home.

An additional memorial service was held February 9th, 2002 in Buffalo, New York.

Arrangements were by Fairbanks Funeral Home & Crematory.

Betty Jean Geiger
Fairbanks, Alaska

Fairbanks resident Betty Geiger, 78, passed away, Thursday, January 24, 2002 at the Denali Center after a long courageous battle with an illness that began with cancer over six years ago.

Betty was born to Jesse (Casey) and Maybelle Jones in Perry Oklahoma on October 1, 1923.

Her father worked in the oil fields and moved to follow the work, which led to Betty completing high school in Mt. Vernon, IL.

This is where she met Frank beginning a relationship that saw them celebrate their sixtieth wedding anniversary with their family and friends on July 12, 2001.

Their life followed construction and other work across many states from Illinois and ending up in Alaska.

Frank and Betty moved to Kenai, Alaska in 1967.

In 1969 they moved to Fairbanks where Betty worked for the Post Office and then alongside of Frank in Real Estate.

The development of agriculture intrigued Frank and they moved to Delta Junction in 1979.

They lived in Delta Jct. until they retired and moved back to Fairbanks is 1993.

Betty lived a life of being an outstanding example of human understanding and courteousness, and always had a wonderful sense of humor.

Friends and family have all been touched by her amazing strength through these last years and her ability to always maintain a positive attitude with that touch of humor.

Betty is survived by her husband Frank, their four boys, Glenn, Robert, Tim and Phil with their wives and many grandchildren and great grandchildren with their families.

Grandchildren, Tanya & family in Portland, Maine, Tami & family and Tony & family both of Baltimore, Maryland, Alex in Seattle, WA, Glenn in Fairbanks, AK, Michelle in Anchorage, AK and more in Alaska, Colorado, California, and Nevada.

Memorial services will be private and Frank intends to travel to Seattle, WA and Orem, UT for private memorials with immediate family.

Donations may be made in Betty’s name to the Hospice of the Tanana Valley, P.O. Box 82770, Fairbanks, AK 99707.

Duane Byron Wolf
Fairbanks, Alaska & Mentasta, Alaska

Mentasta Lake resident, Duane Byron Wolf, born on October 7th, 1966, went to be with the Lord on January 15th, 2002 at his home. He was 33.

“Duane had a long history of illness and the years he’s been with us has been a blessing and also a wonderful time spent with his son, Duane Jr.”

He is survived by his mother, Lotha (Lottie) Wolf-Pitka and her husband Ronald Pitka; his sisters Lisa, Ladonna, Marlene and Charlene; his step-sister Marcell; his brothers Tracy, Travis, Richard Jr. and Paul.

Duane is also survived by his father Richard Wolf Sr. and his wife Annie.

Visitation was held Thursday, January 17th, 2002, at Fairbanks Funeral Home.

Duane was then transported back to Mentasta following the visitation.

Funeral Services were held Saturday, January 19th, 2002, in Mentasta with burial to follow at the H. C. Sanford Cemetery.

Elizabeth G. Wood
Fairbanks, Alaska

Fairbanks resident Elizabeth Wood, 74, died, Saturday, January 19, 2002 at her home in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Elizabeth was born December 3, 1928 in Philadelphia, PA.

During her high school years Elizabeth could be found at the roller rink where she competed locally and nationally in couples skating.

She and her husband Frank moved to Alaska in 1948.

Betty left Alaska briefly, but her heart remained.

From the coldest days to the midnight sun, she could be heard praising the beauty and wonder of Alaska.

Betty couldn't go anywhere without reflecting on how lucky she was.

She hosted a radio talk show, "Women's World", and a TV Show "Comment with Rusty Wood".

She was a district leader with the Girl Scouts and retired from Civil Service.

She wrote children stories and published a book of poetry.

She spent hours with her Amaranth friends, whether it was at social club or fund raising with homemade chocolates.

She was Past Worthy Matron in the Order of Eastern Star both in Oregon and Alaska, a Past Grand Royal Matron with the Order of Amaranth and recipient of the Grand Cross of Colors for outstanding and selfless service to the Rainbow Girls.

She volunteered as a supervisor of the fine arts division, Tanana Valley Fair, was a Red Cross volunteer, a Salvation Army worker, a VFW worker and a Senior Companion with the Fairbanks Schools where she was affectionately known as"Grandma Betty".

To have known Grandma Betty is to have known her family, as she couldn't let an opportunity to brag about them go unaddressed.

Surviving children include her daughter Linda and husband Chief Petty Officer Craig Phipps USN of Oklahoma; daughter Elizabeth A. Wood of Fairbanks; son, Doctor James E. and his wife Catherine Wood of Minnesota, Kelsey Phipps, Whitney Wood, and Jeremy Wood.

Betty considered herself blessed with many other friends and never passed an opportunity to mention them and the pleasure they brought her.

She shared much, good friends, good times and unrelenting love.

Until we meet again, may God hold her in the palm of His hand.

Memorial services were held January 27th, 2002 at the Masonic Temple, Fairbanks, Alaska.
