Jerome (Jerry) Pfaff
Alaska and Clever, Mo., resident Jerome (Jerry) Pfaff passed away Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, at Cox Medical Center South, Springfield, Mo. He was 72.
Funeral services were held Sept. 18 at Adams Funeral Home in Nixa, Mo. Burial was in Jones-Chastain Cemetery in Nixa.
Mr. Pfaff was born April 21, 1930, in Jamestown, N.D. He lived in Alaska for 50 years where he worked in the construction field, both in Alaska and the South Pacific. He supervised the building of schools and power plants as well as the pipeline throughout Alaska. He also was a self-employed businessman both in Alaska and Missouri. He loved to fish and hunt and in August of this year retired to Clever.
Mr. Pfaff was a member of North Road Baptist Church in Nikiski.
He was preceded in death by three sons, Richard, Derrick and Jason Pfaff, a brother, Leroy Pfaff, a sister, Leona Greenwalt, and his parents.
Mr. Pfaff is survived by his wife, Shirley; step-sons and their wives, David and Peggy Fitzpatrick of Marionville, Mo., Ron and Reta Fitzpatrick of Clever and Carl and Jeannette Fitzpatrick of Marionville; brothers and sisters, Inez Greenwalt of Laurel, Mont., Fred Pfaff and wife, Joyce, of Tigard, Ore., Raleigh Pfaff and wife, Gala, of Bend, Ore., Duane Pfaff and wife, Janet, of Puyallup, Wash., and Berniece Denham and husband, Bob, of Redding, Calif.; grandchildren, Amanda, Renae, Justin, Regina, Caitlin and Callie Fitzpatrick; and many friends both in Kenai and Clever.

Erma E. Morgan
Soldotna resident Erma E. Morgan died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, at Heritage Place in Soldotna. She was 88.
A family service will be held in northern California in October.
Mrs. Morgan was born Dec. 5, 1913, in New Somerset, Ohio. She was valedictorian for her two-year high school and salutatorian at a four-year high school she attended to complete her education.
Mrs. Morgan moved to Wasilla, living there in 1996 and 1997. She then moved to Arizona to live with her daughter and then returned to Alaska in 1999, living in Anchorage. In 2000, she moved to Sterling and then to Soldotna.
She enjoyed reading, untangling fishing lines, travel, making people laugh and feel loved.
"Mom's love of adventure and family took her across the United States by bus and train. The call of the wild brought her to Alaska by plane and up the Alaska Highway twice. She was canoeing on the Swanson River when she was 77 and would have gone again the same day if she hadn't worn her daughter out! Mom's understanding, patience and wisdom made everyone around her feel special and loved. She is always with us in our hearts, " her family said.
Mrs. Morgan is survived by her daughter, Barbara Morgan; sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Jovita Morgan, Harold and Sandy Morgan, Tom Morgan and Faye Tabin; grandson and his wife, Scott and Claudia Morgan; granddaughter and her husband, Elizabeth and Michael Leeper; grandchildren, Connor, Isadora, Amy and Jenny Morgan; great-grandchildren, Danielle and Ryan Morgan and Haley and Amanda Leeper; and sisters, Pauline Glenn and Bernice Culp.

Barbara Glode
Soldotna resident Barbara Glode died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at Central Peninsula General Hospital. She was 98.
A small memorial service will be planned in the future.
Mrs. Glode was born the daughter of John and Mary (Bozonitz) Pozega in Anaconda, Mont., and raised on her parents' homestead in the Deer Lodge Valley. She was a longtime Alaska resident.
She and her husband, George, moved to Sitka in 1960 and lived there until he was lost at sea in August 1973. After her husband's death, Mrs. Glode moved to Juneau for a year, then on to Anchorage for several years and finally to Soldotna in 1985, where she resided with her daughter, Dolores McGillis.
"She will always be remembered for her caring, loving, giving spirit. Everyone was always welcome in her home. She had a habit of wanting to feed everyone who came to visit. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will always remember her kindness and gentleness. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, " her family said.
Mrs. Glode is survived by her children, Edward L. Glode, Maria (Adeline) Plakakis and Dolores G. McGillis; grandchildren, Jennifer Sibson, Sean McGillis and Nikoleta, Yiorgos, Nikoloas, Ilias and Pavlos Plakakis; and great-grandchildren, Samantha, Dylan and Pilar Sibson and Brandon and Briana McGillis; sisters, Mary Ostlund, Celia Nicholes, Johanna Moore and Eva Stockmeyer; and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Glode's family requests that no flowers be sent.

Haley Frankel Johnson
Haley Frankel Johnson died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at his home in Kasilof. He was 78.
At the family's request, no services are planned.
Mr. Johnson was born Jan. 28, 1925, in Hope Mills, N. C. and retired in 1974 from the U. S. Navy with 34 years of service.
"He liked to fish, fish, fish, and play Cribbage, " his family said.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Johnson; sister, Fay Pruitt; and brother, Gene Johnson.

James Spencer Evans
Homer resident James Spencer Evans died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at his home. He was 68.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Homer Elks Lodge No. 2127.
Mr. Evans was born March 8, 1934, in McKittrick, Calif. He graduated from high school and obtained a bachelor of science degree in wildlife management. He moved to Alaska in 1962, residing in Anchorage. He worked for the Bureau of Land Management. In 1970, he began working for Homer Electric Association. He worked with HEA until retiring in 1991.
Mr. Evans was a member of the Homer Elks Lodge No. 2127, where he was a Past Exalted Ruler, and Pioneers of Alaska Igloo No. 32. He enjoyed sports, including golf and bowling. He also enjoyed scuba diving, playing chess and being with his family.
"We take comfort in the knowledge that his legacy will continue through the generations. To be around James S. Evans was like being around a fire that ensured warmth, security, protection and guidance. We will always feel the loss of his fire. He always made work fun and knew how to enjoy life, " his family said.
Mr. Evans is survived by his wife of 46 years, Joan; children, Laurie Anne Slate, Sandra Ruth Arndt, Robert Francis Evans and James Gowell Evans; grandchildren, Anne Marie Slate, Justin Grady Slate, Brandon Spencer Slate, Joelene Nicole Arndt, Benjamin Wade Arndt, Seth Thomas Arndt, Samantha Rochelle Arndt, and Robert Valeriy Evans; sister, Jean Aldridge and her husband, George; brothers, Robert B. and Wiliam M. Evans and his wife, Phyllis; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dennis J. O'Neal
Kenai resident Dennis J. O'Neal died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, surrounded by his family and friends at his home. He was 64.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Kenai.
Viewing will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Sister Joyce Ross will officiate. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Holyoke, Colo. Burial will follow the service at Holyoke Memorial Park.
Mr. O'Neal was born Dec. 24, 1937, in Holyoke, Colo., to Maurine and James O'Neal. He was the youngest of three children. He attended Holyoke schools through the 11th grade and graduated from North High School in Phoenix in 1955.
From there, he went to Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo., where he was active in the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and a member of the Air Force ROTC. He graduated in 1959, with a bachelor's degree in agronomy. Following his college graduation, he returned to Holyoke, where he was a successful, innovative farmer for almost 40 years.
In May 1962, he married Carolyn Faye Jones Precht at Our Lady of the Mountains in Estes Park, Colo. He adopted Carolyn's three children, Mary, Barbara and Rupert. The couple later had two additional sons, Shawn and James.
While in Holyoke, Mr. O'Neal was involved in many community activities. He served as director on several boards, including the Holyoke Co-op, the Phillips County Telephone Co., and the Pioneer National Bank. He was also an active leader of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, serving in many capacities.
He and his wife, Carolyn, retired from farming in 1996 and moved to Kenai, where he lived until his death.
During his years in Kenai, Mr. O'Neal was an active member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Kenai. He also volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and served on the board of directors for the Peninsula Oilers baseball team.
Mr. O'Neal's special interests included hunting, fishing, traveling, reading, baseball and going to the "office, " which meant checking the stock market quite often. He also enjoyed playing bridge and other card games.
His family said, "Dennis was a good father to five very unique and often challenging children. He encouraged them to be strong and independent people. No one was a stranger to Denny. He quietly shared his gifts to help many fulfill their dreams."
Mr. O'Neal was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn.
He is survived by his five children, Mary O'Neal of Ridgecrest, Calif., Barbara Heath and her husband, Walter, of Simi Valley, Calif., Rupert O'Neal and his wife, Claire, of Holyoke, Colo., Shawn O'Neal and his wife, Kristi, of Evergreen, Colo., James O'Neal and his wife, Moira, of San Carlos, Calif.; grandchildren, Katiana Rush, Jordin and Adam Heath, Jake, Robin and Emily O'Neal, Kelsey and Denton O'Neal, Catherine Carolyn O'Neal and another grandchild due in 2003; sister, Helen Schwisow of Sterling, Colo.; and sister-in-law, Virginia Billings of Greeley, Colo.

Carla Jean Cutting
Former Soldotna resident Carla Jean Cutting died Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, in Nowata, Okla. She was 49.
Services were held Saturday in Oklahoma.
Mrs. Cutting was born Oct. 5, 1952, in Olean, N.Y., to Kenneth A. and Jean (Foster) Blade. She graduated from high school in Olean in 1970 and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in business administration at the State University of New York at Fredonia in 1974. She married Glenn Cutting on Aug. 23, 1975, in Olean. Also in 1975, she entered the U.S. Army and received her honorable discharge and good conduct medal in 1978. In 1987, she earned a master's degree in education at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo. Mrs. Cutting was also a missionary to Russia with Josh McDowell Ministries.
During her time in Alaska, Mrs. Cutting worked as a librarian for the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Media Center in Soldotna and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Soldotna.
Mrs. Cutting was preceded in death by a brother, Barry Blade.
She is survived by her parents, Kenneth and Jean Blade of Olean; her husband, Glenn, of Nowata; two sons, Sean E. Cutting of Boston, Mass., and Jason A. Cutting of Anchorage; two daughters, Carie J. Cutting and Tara L. Cutting, both of Nowata; three brothers, Kenneth G. Blade and Lance R. Blade of Olean and Brian K. Blade of Allegany, N.Y.; four sisters, Brenda J. Pierce of Limestone, N.Y., Danita J. Colley of Franklinville, N.Y., Andrea J. Butts of Holloman Air Force Base and Ellena J. Butts of Olean; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the YMCA of McKean County, Victims Resource Center, 24 West Corydon, Bradford, Pa., 16701.

Mateland Clinton Smith Jr.
Soldotna resident Mateland Clinton Smith Jr. died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage. He was 88.
No local services are planned at this time.
Mr. Smith was born Jan. 24, 1914, in Ivanhoe, Okla. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, from Dec. 10, 1943, to Feb. 4, 1946, earning two bronze stars.
Mr. Smith was a construction worker for the state of California until his retirement Jan. 31, 1977. He moved to Alaska in June 2002.
He enjoyed Zane Gray books and other Western novels, gold panning and walking.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Margie Smith of Soldotna; daughter, Zelma Quick of Soldotna; sister, Agnes Hicks of Colorado Springs, Colo.; grandson, Matthew Quick of Anchorage; granddaughters, Holly Boerner of Forest Grove, Ore., and Sandra Quick of Edmonds, Wash.; and great-grandchildren, Alexis and Gabrielle Quick of Anchorage and Rebecca Boerner of Forest Grove, Ore.
