Brian L. Peck
Soldotna area resident Brian L. Peck died suddenly Thursday, June 6, 2002, at his home south of Soldotna. He was 62.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Spruce Grove Memorial Park Cemetery at Mile 3 of Kalifornsky Beach Road near Kasilof. Pastor Herb Schaan will officiate at the service. A reception will follow the service from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Kenai Elks Lodge in Kenai.
Mr. Peck was born Oct. 26, 1939, in Anchorage. He graduated from Anchorage High School. Mr. Peck worked at his family's aircraft business until 1969. He then owned and operated the Preflight Room and Airport Cafe' until he purchased the Katmai Motel in Kenai. He owned the Katmai until 1981 when he began working in the oil field industry until his retirement in 1999.
Mr. Peck was a member of the Lutheran Church, Kenai Elks Lodge and the Quiet Birdman Aviation Group. He also did a lot of charitable work for numerous organizations. He thoroughly enjoyed being surrounded by his family and had a lifelong love of aviation.
"Brian was a beloved family man who will be greatly missed by the many people he knew in the area. Brian was a very outgoing person who never met a stranger and always lent a helping hand wherever he could, " his family said.
Mr. Peck is survived by his wife of 44 years, Nancy; sons, Randy and his wife, June, and Gregory and his wife, Lori; daughter, Jodi; his mother, Althea "Babs" Peck; aunt, Mary Archer; sister, Gail Petersen; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; father-in-law, Richard Albers; sisters-in-law, Mary and Sally Albers; and brother-in-law, Alan Kemble.
Memorial donations may be made in Mr. Peck's name to the charity of one's choice.

Leelynn Haywood Chumley
Sterling resident Leelynn Haywood Chumley died Sunday, June 23, 2002, near Cooper Landing as the result of a motorcycle accident. He was 33.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Abundant Life Assembly of God Church in Sterling. Pastor Bob Reasner will officiate.
Mr. Chumley was born June 2, 1969, in Seagraves, Texas. He attended Soldotna High School and graduated from the Western College of Auctioneering in 1997. He lived most of his life in Alaska.
Mr. Chumley was raised in the family construction business, owned and operated his own trucking business and was an auctioneer since 1997.
He attended the Soldotna Church of God most of his life and recently attended Peninsula Bible Fellowship. He donated many hours to benefit auctions. He enjoyed snowmachines, stock car racing, Nascar racing and was an Oakland Raiders fan. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
"He was a loving dad who was very generous, hard-working and willing to give to anyone, " his family said.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, J.H. "Cowboy" Chumley, W.A. "Mac" McCown and Margaret Holland; and uncles, Alan Sewell and Max McCown.

Cynthia L. Cobb
Kenai resident Cynthia L. Cobb died Friday, May 18, 2001, at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage of heart failure. She was 40.
A funeral service was held on Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Kenai. Following the funeral, she was buried at the Kenai City Cemetery. Pastor Dean Nichols officiated.
Mrs. Cobb was born on April 27, 1961, in Astoria, Ore. She completed two years of college at Brigham Young University. She had been a resident of Alaska since September 1995, and lived in North Kenai and Kenai. She spent most of her adult life as a homemaker. Mrs. Cobb was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kenai. She enjoyed crafts, quilting, cross stitch and many other creative pursuits. She loved to sing and enjoyed offering that gift to God for his good pleasure.
"Cindi's greatest purpose in life was to pass her faith on to her six children and be a God-designed mate and partner to her husband. She will be missed, and yet we rejoice that she has gone on ahead to the reward that awaits all who know Christ Jesus, " her family wrote.
Mrs. Cobb is survived by her husband, Tony; children Joshua, Nicole, Elias, Charla, Kendra and Jesse; and her brothers Jay and Ian.

Emil Dolchok
Kenai resident Emil Dolchok died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, on the bank of the Kenai River from a heart attack. He was 77.
Services will be at the Holy Assumption of the Virgin Mary Russian Orthodox Church in Kenai. Visitation will be at 5:30 p.m. today, with a vigil at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the church. Father Michael Trefon will officiate. Pallbearers will be Rusty Huf, Gabe Juliussen Jr., Mike Carpenter, Bruce Nordenson, James Showalter and Doug Darien. Honorary pallbearers will be George Pederson and Herman Hermanson. There will be a gathering and meal at Fort Kenay following the funeral.
Mr. Dolchok was born Dec. 26, 1923, and was a lifelong resident of Kenai. He worked building the road system on the Kenai Peninsula and the Whittier Tunnel. He commercial fished and trapped, and he was an electrician on the North Slope and at the first power plant in Kenai.
Mr. Dolchok was a member of the Holy Assumption of the Virgin Mary Russian Orthodox Church, Kenai Moose Lodge, Cook Inlet Region Inc., Kenai Natives Association and the Kenaitze Indian Tribe. In 1962, he was one of the organizers of the tribe, and was vice president when Kenai Natives Association was formed in 1971. At the time of his death he was serving on the KNA board. In 1999, he was CIRI shareholder of the year and the Alaska Federation of Natives elder of the year.
Mr. Dolchok was a Native artist specializing in miniature snowshoes and dog sleds. His special interests were subsistence hunting, fishing and gathering. The pride of his life was spending time with his grandchildren.
"Emil passed away doing what he loved, fishing the early-run king salmon. He was a generous man with a big heart who always would stop what he was doing to help others, " his family said. "He was a role model, not only for his family, but the community as well. A leader, teacher and artist whose example, wisdom and gentleness will be remembered in all the lives he touched."
Mr. Dolchok is survived by his wife of 46 years, Margaret; daughters and sons-in-law Emily and Carl Marrs and Evelyn and Rusty Huf; brother, Mack Dolchok; sister, Marie Decker; grandchildren Emil Marrs, Crystal Marrs Harrison, Samantha Huf, Christa Huf, Gabe Juliussen Jr., Wanda Reams, Alec Lewis and Myra Cook; loved ones Susan Wells, Rhonda Nordenson and Jo Smith; and great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and others too numerous to mention.

Gary Scott Anderson
Former Kenai Peninsula resident Gary Scott Anderson died peacefully in his sleep Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at his home in Big Lake. He was 42.
His ashes will be scattered in a private service at one of his favorite fishing spots.
Mr. Anderson was born June 21, 1958, in Jamestown, N.Y. He lived on the peninsula before moving to Big Lake in 1984.
He worked a number of different jobs and had been disabled for several years. Mr. Anderson enjoyed hunting, fishing and electronics.
He is survived by his wife, Jane; son, Joseph; daughter, Jessica; and brother, Mike.

Ronnie Wayne Boyd
Cooper Landing resident Ronnie Wayne Boyd died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at Providence Hospital in Anchorage. He was 46.
Services are planned for July 21 in Woodson, Texas.
Mr. Boyd was born on March 4, 1956, in Woodson. He graduated from Woodson High School in 1974. In 1975, he attended Texas Trade School in Lubbock, Texas. In 1999, he moved to Cooper Landing. He worked a variety of jobs, including for the maintenance department of the Kenai Princess Lodge, as a trail guide for Alaska Horsemen Trail Adventures, as a truck driver and in oil field services.
His hobbies included horseback riding, playing darts and riding snow machines.
"Ronnie never met a stranger and always extended a helping hand to whoever needed it. He loved being with horses and had many years of joy performing at rodeos, where riding bulls and roping were his specialties. He will be missed by his many friends in Cooper Landing and his son and ex-wife in Woodson, " his family said.
Mr. Boyd is survived by his mother, Geraldine Beaty; father, Wade Boyd; sisters, Gloria Hurford and Karen Boland; son, Rowdy Boyd all of Woodson; and brother, Roy McGough of Seymour, Texas.

Vera Howarth
Soldotna resident Vera Howarth died Sunday, July 14, 2002, at Central Peninsula General Hospital in Soldotna. She was 93.
A memorial service is planned for Friday at 3 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Soldotna.
Mrs. Howarth was born Oct. 26, 1908, in Havensville, Kan., to Milton and Rhoda McKinsey. She moved to Alaska in 1946, living in Ketchikan, Mountain View, Kasilof, then Soldotna. She worked as a janitor at Kasilof Territorial School from 1954 to 1955. She then started her own business.
Mrs. Howarth was one of 20 people statewide to be presented with the First Lady's Volunteer Award from Bella Hammond and was the first to be granted an honorary membership in the Soldotna Chamber of Commerce. She also was honored with a lifetime membership in the Soldotna Historical Society
She was a pioneer businesswoman, starting her Soldotna store, Vera's Variety, in 1956. Prior to that, she sold goods from the back of her car and was greeted enthusiastically when she made the rounds on Wildwood Military Base.
She was a strong supporter of the State Championship Sled Dog Races from the first years when races were run between Soldotna and Kenai. Mrs. Howarth remained active throughout her life, even enjoying dancing at her 90th birthday party.
She was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist in Ketchikan.
She enjoyed crocheting, saying that was her "pill" as it kept her mind busy. She also enjoyed ceramics, beads and any craft she could discover.
"She was spiritually-minded and loved life. She lived to love and loved to live. She cherished her friends and adored her grandchildren. She always had time for her friends. She gave words of comfort and wisdom and hope to those who were down, and they always left feeling uplifted. Her friends called her the Grand Lady of Soldotna, " her family said.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; son, John Paul Franklin; and grandson, John Paul Franklin Jr.
She is survived by her daughter, Judy Mueller of Anchorage; daughter and son-in-law, Jewel Jones and John P. McFarland of Soldotna; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; 15 nieces and nephews; and 32 great-nieces and nephews.

Sylvia Ann Davis
Longtime Soldotna resident Sylvia Ann Davis died Sunday, July 28, 2002, at Anchorage Providence Hospital in Anchorage, after recently being diagnosed with cancer. She was 82.
Services will be conducted at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Soldotna Wednesday at 3 p.m. A reception will follow at O'Neill Hall.
Mrs. Davis was born Jan. 25, 1920, in Virginia, Minn. She married Bernard L. Davis in 1943, and in 1945, the couple moved to Kelso, Wash. They moved to Alaska in 1961, with five children, settling in Soldotna where two more children were born.
"She was a gentle mother, grandmother and friend who welcomed visitors with a warm smile. She was always ready to stoke the fire in the bathhouse, put a cake in the oven or offer a bed to her guests. With her tremendous sense of humor, she frequently lost herself to fits of laughter, and she was a dancer with a flair for the polka. Her life was full of love and fun and she will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her, " her family said.
She is survived by her sons, daughters, sons-in-law and daughters-in-law, Maxine and Charles Pohland of Anchorage, Gary and Susan Davis of Soldotna, Marilyn and Steve Waller of Valdez, Margaret Prestwick of Soldotna, Dennis and Karen Davis of Anchorage, Jay and Ruth Davis of Soldotna and Kevin and Lisa Davis of Anchorage; grandchildren, Suzanne Shafer, Brian Davis, Donald Pohland, Karen O'Hara, Kay Ellen Schuster, Charlie Pohland, Anna Marie Prestwick, Carol Davis, Leigh Prestwick, Ray Davis, Crystal Davis, Sylvia Davis, Jared Davis, Jayce Davis, Lillian Davis and Jackson Davis; and great-grandchildren, Cassidy Prestwick, Allison Shafer, Olivia Schuster, Olivia Davis Tuttle, Elena Schuster and Aily O'Hara.
