Joseph Bartos

Soldotna resident and Alaska Native Joseph T. “Joe” Bartos died unexpectedly at home on January 1, 2002 in Soldotna.
He was 38.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
Mr. Bartos was born Apr. 5, 1963 in Soldotna, Alaska.
He graduated from Kenai Central High School in 1981 and futhered his education with two years of college.
He worked as a truck driver and plant operator on the North Slope for many years.
Mr. Bartos was a shareholder in Salamatof Native Corporationa and Cook Inlet Region Incorporated.
He loved snowmachining, subsistence fishing, outdoors and being with friends and family.
His family said, “Joe’s going to be missed by all.
He loved ‘experimental’ cooking, and we loved eating it.
He was our 'Iron Chef of Alaska.'
He loved playing with and spoiling his nieces and nephews.
He had a wonderful, crazy sense of humor, and made everybody smile. We love you and miss you.”
Mr. Bartos was preceded in death by his mother, Mattie Brower Bartos.
He is survived by his father, Henry Bartos of Soldotna; brother, James Bartos of Anchorage; sisters, Katie Lee of Anchorage and Henia Minium and her husband, Duke of Soldotna; nephews, Henry Lee and his wife, Jacqueline, of Anchorage and Matthew Minium of Soldotna; niece, Alie Minium of Soldotna; grand-niece, Kandus Lee of Anchorage; and many ohter grand-nieces and nephews and friends.
He is also survived by his contant companion, Crazy Dog.

Kenneth Goodwin
Anchorage and Kenai, Alaska
Kenai resident Kenneth Roy “Goodie” Goodwin died December 31, 2001.
He was 69 years old.
A public visiation is scheduled for 7:00 to 9:00 pm Friday January 4, 2001 at the Peninsula Memorial Chapel in Kenai.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm Saturday January 5, 2001 at the American Legion Post 20 in Kenai.
The American Legion will render military honors.
Mr. Goodwin was born September 17, 1932 in Benton, Arkansas.
He moved to Alaska in 1962 and has lived in Anchorage, Seward and finally Kenai.
He was employed by the Municipality of Anchorage in the Waste Water Division.
Some of his hobbies were fishing, playing golf, yard work, wood working, and above all boating.
Mr Goodwin is preceded in death by his parents Delphard and Joy Godwin.
He is survived by his Fiancee Kat Nielson of Kenai, his ex-wife Mary Goodwin of Anchorage, his sons Robert Godwin of California, Roy Goodwin of Anchorage, Phil Goodwin of Washington, Don Goodwin of Maui, his daughter Melinda Goodwin of Anchorage, his sisters Shirley Hancock of Mississippi, and Beulah Hall of Arkansas.

Daniel Degner
Anchorage, Alaska
Daniel Mark Degner, 51, died December 17th, 2001 at his home in Anchorage.
Daniel was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 13, 1950.
He lived in Anchorage since June 1978, moving here from Key West Florida.
Daniel worked in the restaurant industry, and was voted waiter of the year in 1992.
He was also working on a degree at UAA.
Daniel was preceded in death by his father; G. Waldemar Degner.
He is survived by his mother; Anita Degner – of Fort Wayne, Indiana, his brother; David Degner – of Anchorage, Alaska, his sister; mary, and brother in law; Jeff Williams – of Peter’s Creek his sister Vangie Degner of St. Louis, his brother Joel Degner – of Wasilla, and his nephew Matthew Shafis of St. Louis.
His family remembers Daniel’s great affection for his dog, Denali and cat, Thomas.
Daniel rarely went anywhere without Denali.
He was a very kind hearted and a concerned son, brother, and friend.
He enjoyed visiting relatives and friends.
He loved his house and living in Alaska.
His hobbies included photography, watching biographies on television, tennis, golf and bike riding.
A memorial gathering will be held at his house on December 29, 2001 from 2:00 to 4:00.

Barbara Jean Sykes
Juneau, Alaska
Barbara Jean Sykes, 63 of Juneau died Wednesday, January 2, 2002 after a brief illness with cancer.
She was born August 28, 1938 in Kansas.
She moved to Haines, Alaska in 1968 with her husband and children where she lived until 5 years ago and then moved to Juneau.
A celebration of life will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday January 7, 2002 at the Presbyterian Church (Haines, Alaska) with graveside services to follow immediately at Jones Point Cemetery.
A celebration of life will also be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, January 10, 2002 at the Juneau Christian Center.
Barbara was a member of the Juneau Christian Center and Secretary of Glory to Glory Ministries.
She traveled to villages and reservations taking the Gospel of Jesus Christ to many through Glory to Glory Ministries.
Barbara shall be remembered for the love and humor she brought with her wherever she went.
She was well known for her delicious pies, which she baked to help raise funds for many organizations.
He had a love for children as she had her own Day Care in both Haines and Juneau, she was known to her daycare children as “Grandma.”
For all those that had pleasure of knowing her knew that she loved the Lord with all her heart and soul and was nor one bit bashful about letting it be known.
Barbara will be greatly missed by her family and friends; she has indeed touched many people’s lives.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Sykes.
She is survived by her son and daughter in law; Don & Janice Sykes of Talkeetna, Alaska, daughter; Sheryl Tichenor of Eagle River, daughter and son in law; Sue & Lon Carson and son James of Big Lake, Alaska.
She has 17 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First National Bank of Anchorage.

Betty Jean Short
Anchorage, Alaska
Betty Jean Short, 60, Died December 13th, 2001 at Providence Medical Center, after a yearlong battle with cancer.
She was born July10, 1941 in Puyallup, Washington.
Memorial services will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday December 22, 2001 at the Anchorage Funeral Home with Ray Torres Officiating.
Betty moved to Haines, Alaska in 1974 and lived there until 1978.
She made Anchorage here home in 1981-2001.
Betty worked at Northern Rehabilitation as a Bookkeeper, she was also president of the Grandparent Rights Organization.
She also enjoyed shopping at bazaars and finding great deals at garage sales.
The family is quoted as saying, “Betty was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.
She went in peace with her husband, daughter, and grandson by her side.
Scope out the bazaars and garage sales for us mom till we can be there!”
Betty is proceeded in death by her mother; Inga J. Stewart, and father; Robert F. Stewart.
She is survived by husband; Walter Short – of Anchorage, daughter; Trace West and Son-in-law William West of Sierra Vista, AZ, grandson; Jason Cumiford – of Anchorage, and two granddaughters; JeriLynn Cumiford – of Medford, Oregon, and Shelby Hickman – of Sierra Vista, AZ. Sister; Donna Stewart – of Seattle, Wa. and brother; Robert Stewart – also of Seattle, Wa.
