LORRAINE JUNE GRIFFIN
LORRAINE JUNE GRIFFIN Lorraine June Griffin was born July 2, 1927 to Edwin Rupert and Emma Pearl (Grover) Judson in Pine Camp, 2.5 miles west of Keystone, SD. She died Dec. 30, 2010 at the age of 83, at home with her loved ones nearby. Lorraine was educated in Keystone, SD and married Leslie Pierce on Dec. 10, 1942 in Rapid City, SD. They lived in Keystone, SD, Mullen, ID, Clatskanie, OR, and returned to Keystone in 1952. They had three children. She moved to Custer, SD in 1959. She was married to Donald L. Griffin on Oct. 3, 1964 in Custer. She worked at various positions in Custer until taking a job with the City of Custer Municipal Liquor Store in 1961, working her way up to the management position, and retiring in 1983. She moved with her daughter and son-in-law to Keystone in 1984. Lorraine was a member and Past Noble Grand of Helping Hand Rebecca Lodge #79 of Custer and a member of the Congregational Church of Keystone. Lorraine enjoyed coin collecting, reading, and needlework which she shared with those she loved. The family genealogy was her avocation. She loved her family passionately and cared deeply for her many friends. She most enjoyed life after having her first grandchild. She was happiest and most content when at home. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband Leslie Pierce; husband Donald Griffin; son Darrold L. Pierce; daughter Donna Walton; stepson Timothy Griffin; grandson Darrold Lee Pierce, Jr.; granddaughter Dawn Pierce; great granddaughter Angel Pierce; one brother and three sisters. Survivors include her son Harold (Sharon) Pierce, Custer, SD; son-in-law Gene Walton, Keystone, SD; grandchildren Gene Pierce, Gillette, WY, Anthony Pierce, Rapid City, SD, Ryan (Katharina) Pierce, Box Elder, SD, Mishawn (Jason) Larson, Lewistown, MT, John (June) and Paul Pierce, Custer, SD, Leslie (Casandra) Pierce, Salem, OR, Jerry Wager, Keystone, SD, Chris Wager, Rapid City, SD, Lorrie Lanham, Omaha, NE, David (Jamie) Walton, Custer, SD, Jennifer (Steve) Harbour, Branson, MO, Tammy (Sterling) Winkelman, Utica, NE, Gail (Dale) Dishman, Lincoln, NE; 23 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at 11:00, Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at the Keystone Congregational Church with Pastor Chuck Landon officiating. Inurnment of ashes will take place in the Keystone Cemetery at a later date. A memorial has been established to the Keystone United Church of Christ. Edstrom & Rooks Funeral Service at Serenity Springs is in charge of arrangements.
Bryant "Tony" Highhorse
Bryant “Tony” High Horse, 29, passed away Wednesday, September 16 at Ft. Meade VA Medical Center at Sturgis. He is survived by his parents, Bryant & Margery High Horse, Rapid City; one brother, Paul High Horse of North Platte, NE and one sister, Julie High Horse-Munstedt of Surprise, AZ A first night visitation will be at 5 – 9 pm, Monday, September 21 at Serenity Springs; a second night visitation will be at 5-9 pm, Tuesday, at Serenity Springs with a rosary vigil service beginning at 7:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 am, Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with Rev. Peter Laffredo and Rev. Dan Juelfs as celebrants. Burial with full military honors will follow at 1:30 pm at Black Hills National Cemetery.
Dr. Jay W. Hoffmann
Dr. Jay W. Hoffmann, 55, Rapid City, died unexpectedly at his home, Monday evening, October 5, 2009. He was born December 30, 1953 in Tyndall, SD. Dr. Hoffmann served with the 82nd Army Airborne Special Forces Intelligence from 1972 through 1975 as a Green Beret. Jay practiced at the Regional Medical Clinic in Rapid City as an internal medicine physician and served as a USD Associate Professor of Medicine. He graduated from the University of South Dakota Medical School in 1982. On November 12, 1983, Jay married Jo Taylor in Sioux Falls. He is survived by his wife, Jo Hoffmann, Rapid City, his daughter, Jessica Hoffmann and her fiancé, Shawn, Shreveport, LA., his son, Michael Hoffmann, a USD pre med student at Vermillion, three sisters; Genie Bordewyk, and her husband, Gary, Pueblo West, CO., Jo Griffin, Edmonton, Alberta, CA., and Kathy Lehnhart, Waynesboro, Virginia, four brothers; John Jensen, and his wife, Kathy, Sydney, MT., James Hoffmann and his wife, Kim, Lake Zurich, IL., Jeff Hoffmann and his wife, Laura, Rapid City and Kelley Hoffmann and his wife, Rhonda, Axtell, NE. Father, Bernard Hoffmann, White Lake, Aunts and Uncles and numerous nieces and nephews. He gave his life to his patients. Being a Doctor was his passion and he treated them with respect and love. Jay lived with a sense of humor and smile upon his face. Memorial services will be held, 10:00 AM, Friday, October 9, 2009 at Edstrom & Rooks Funeral Services at Serenity Springs Tranquility Chapel. His ashes will remain with his family. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to the Humane Society of the Black Hills.
Henry P. Lorch
Henry P. Lorch, 87, Rapid City, passed away January 16, 2010 at Fountain Springs Health Care. Henry is survived by his son, Jay Lorch, Black Hawk and his daughter Gail Ness, Papillion, NE. Memorial Services for Henry will be scheduled at a later date.
Hanwiyapa Marissa Doreen Hill
Hanwiyapa Marissa Doreen Hill, 33, Rapid City, died October 18, 2011 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. She was born January 29, 2978 in Sisseton, SD to Murray Hill, Sr and Nancy Little Hawk and began her journey to the Spirit World on October 16, 2011 in Rapid City. Hanwiyapa has entered the Spirit World with her Grandparents; Irene Underbaggage, Richard Little Hawk, Josephine LaPointe, Starlight and Zachariah Hill. Survivors include her daughters; Cydney Veronica White and Elisa Rae White, Rapid City, her Mother, Nancy Little Hawk, Rapid City, her father, Murray Hill, Sr., Sisseton, a brother, Murray Hill, Jr, Sioux Falls, five sisters; Jolene Little Hawk, Oglala, Starlight Michelle Brings Plenty, Pierre, Matowin Ska Hill, Morning Star Hill and Micaela Irene Hill, all of Rapid City, numerous aunts uncles, nieces and nephews. Hanwiyapa (Marisa) was truly an amazing person, she was loved by so many, she touched so many hearts. She has always started at the bottom and Always worked her way up to the top. As the eldest sibling, she had very many responsibilities, and has fulfilled her duty of being an older sister. She was a loving mother of two beautiful daughters. She always made sure they were taken care of and did whatever she could to make sure they were successful. She was also a great Auntie. She loved every single one of her nieces and nephews. Hanwiyapa was always there for her family and friends, physically and mentally. She was an unselfish individual and will be remembered for the generous gifts of life she gave to others through her decisions to be an organ donor. Hanwiyapa (Marisa) was a loving daughter, mother, sister, grand daughter, aunt, niece, cousin, and friend. Hanwiyapa was truly a gift from God. A wake will begin at 5:00 pm, Thursday, October 20, 2011 at the Mother Butler Center. Services will be Friday 10:00 am at the Mother Butler Center. Interment will be in the Mt Calvary Cemetery in Rapid City under the direction of Edstrom & Rooks Funeral Service at Serenity Springs of Rapid City
Germaine V. Larvie Adkins
Germaine V. Larvie Adkins Germaine V. Larvie Adkins, 81, Rapid City, was born November 20, 1929 on the Rosebud Reservation and journeyed onto the Spirit World on October 17, 2011. She attended St Francis Indian Boarding School and graduated the 8th grade. She moved to Rapid City when she was 18 years of age and began her life. Survivors include her seven children; Alva Buckingham and her husband Jim, Fran Troy and her husband Tom and Bill Turner and his wife, Connie all of Boudersport, Pennsylvania, Theresa Weston and her husband Denny, Springfield, Missouri, Shirley Kinloch, Rapid City, Mike Turner, Rapid City, a brother, Pete Larvie and his wife Connie, Farmington, NM, 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Germaine enjoyed picnics in the park, car rides and especially babysitting the children of the neighborhood who all called her Grandma. Many times the car rides ended up in Deadwood, much to her delight. She loved humor and enjoyed being a jokester. She truly loved her family and many friends at the senior citizens center and St Isaac Jogues Parish. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00 AM, Saturday at St Isaac Jogues Catholic Parish with Fr. David Matzko presiding. Interment will be in the Mt Calvary Cemetery under the direction of Edstrom & Rooks Funeral Service at Serenity Springs of Rapid City.

Patricia A Shepherd, 63, Rapid City, died Thursday, October 20, 2011 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Survivors include her son, Sheldon Shepherd, Edmond, OK, two grand daughters, four brothers; Dan Dunn, David Dunn, Jim Dunn and Tom Dunn, all of Rapid City, six sisters; Linda Stanton, Long Beach, CA, Maryjo Radke, Rapid City, Susan Newland, Ft. Pierre, Donna Schroeder, Rapid City, Margie Potts, Iowa and Koleen De Notter, Rapid City. Service arrangements are pending with Edstrom & Rooks Funeral Service at Serenity Springs of Rapid City.

Sharon K. Riecke, 73, of Rapid City, died Friday, October 21, 2011 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. She is survived by her husband, Bill, Rapid City, her son, Dan, Lakewood, CO, her daughter, Theresa Martinson, Parker, CO, her brother, Tom Heuerman, Rapid City, her sister, Jean Enloe, Rapid City, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A celebration of life funeral service will be held at 10:00 am, Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at Edstrom & Rooks Funeral Service at Serenity Springs Chapel of Tranquility with Pastor Dwight Stensgaard, Calvary Lutheran Church, officiating. A visitation will be offered one hour prior to service time. Interment will be in the Mt View Cemetery in Rapid City.
Susan M. Berner
Susan M. Berner, 60, Rapid City, died Sunday, October 23, 2011 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Sue was born August 14,1951 in Hot Springs. Growing up, her family travelled extensively, her father being employed by the U.S. Park Service. Sue was a co-owner with her parents in Sue’s Fabric Shop. Later she taught herself book keeping and worked at Don’s Income Tax service until she opened Sue’s Tax Service. Sue embraced her Native American heritage and loved the wind in her hair and the sun on her face as she rode on the motorcycle with her fiancée, Tony. A strong woman, she loved her family and her many friends. Survivors include her fiancée, Tony Powell, Rapid City, two daughters; Tonya Berner and Jennifer Drabik, both of Rapid City, three grandsons; Davontae Berner-Ware, Dayton Barck and Michael Drabik, and her sister, Krisann Osborne, Lexington, SC. A celebration of life memorial service will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Edstrom & Rooks Funeral Service, Serenity Springs Chapel of Tranquility, Rapid City. She is preceded in death by her parents; Les and Lucille (Sawyer) Berner. A memorial has been established by the family.
Wayne A. Dietrich
Wayne A. Dietrich, age 73, died at his home west of Hermosa, SD, on Wednesday, October 26, 2011. Wayne was born February 11, 1938, in Mclaughlin, SD to Julius and Edna (Schlaht) Dietrich. He attended school in Mclaughlin, SD, where he met his wife of fifty-five years, Janet Eby. They were married October 26, 1956. They ranched northeast of Mclaughlin for 43 years where they raised three children. In 1999, they sold the ranch and retired to the Black Hills where they lived for the past 12 years. Wayne’s interests included ranching, rodeoing, collecting western memorabilia, breaking horses, and in his retirement, playing cards with his many friends. Wayne could accomplish anything he set his mind to including breaking horses, flying an airplane, riding bulls, and building roads with his bobcat on the land he developed in Box Canyon. You could always count on Wayne. He will be missed by all of his friends and family. He had a fun loving spirit and loved to make others laugh with his jokes and pranks. Wayne is survived by his wife Jan, three children, Todd Dietrich (Dee Ann), Tracy Lessin (Tom), and Trudy Lahren (Kevin), and five grandchildren Tyson, Nick, Kenzie, Tomi and Sami., one brother Dale Dietrich (JoAnn) and one sister Marlene Howe (Don). He was preceded in death by his Mother and Father. A visitation will be held on Sunday, October 30, from 3pm to 5pm at Edstrom & Rooks Funeral Service at Serenity Springs. A celebration of Wayne’s life will be held at 10 am on Monday October 31, 2011 at Edstrom & Rooks Funeral Service, Serenity Springs Chapel of Tranquility with Reverend Herb Cleveland officiating. According to his wishes, Wayne will be cremated. A memorial has been established by the family.
Susan K. Stephens
Susan K. Stephens Obituary Susan Kay Stephens A wonderful Wife, Mother, Sister, Grandma and Aunt left us on October 27th to be with our Lord and Savior. Susan died in the comfort of her own home; just the way she had wanted, surrounded by her loving husband (Scotty) and son in law (Mikal). Susan Kay Stephens was born May 11, 1943, to Harvey and Loretta (Thorpe) Ringler in Hecla, S.D. She was raised on a farm near Hecla, S.D. and attended Johnson Country School and the Hecla High School, she graduated in 1961. In 1962 she met the love of her life, a military man, Scotty Oce Stephens; they married on November 17, 1962. And have spent the last 48 years raising their children and enjoying life. They have four children Vincent Stephens and girlfriend Kimberly Hurst (Ex-wife Jayna Davis) Bellevue, Nebraska and their children Brittni (Fiancé Cale Yates), Kayla Stephens, and Jaycee Stephens. Michael (Kathryn) Stephens, McKinney, Texas, and their children Josiah, Mary, Luke, Benjamin, Jacob, Timothy, Anna, Rachel, Elizabeth and Elijah. Kimberly (Mikal) Haaland Rapid City, their children Connor and Cooper. Scott Stephens, Colorado Springs his children Kristina Stephens, Goochland, VA and Sierra and Christopher Stephens, Ohio. Susan loved to spend time with her grandchildren. Although she has many grandchildren she has not seen in years she still held them very close to her heart. She enjoyed watching her grandsons playing baseball games or just giving them a hard time over the kitchen table. She was a one of a kind grandmother, mother, mother-in-law, wife, and sister whom will be dearly missed. Susan is survived by her husband Scotty O. Stephens, Rapid City, S.D, her four children and many grandchildren; and her brothers and sisters Tom (Fran) Ringler of Winterpark, FLa. Steven (Diane) Ringler of Raid city, S.D. Connie Skatvold of Aberdeen, S.D. Mary (Morrie) Hansen of Mina, S.D. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Jerry and Michael Ringler, one Sister Peggy Ackerman and one niece Michelle Burckhard. Mass of Christian burial for Susan Kay Stephens, 68, Rapid City will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday November 3rd, 2011 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 4500 Jackson Boulevard. Father Tyler Dennis will be the celebrant. Interment will be at Mountain View Cemetery immediately following the service. Liturgical wake service will be at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Edstrom & Rooks Funeral Service at Serenity Springs, 3808 Sheridan Lake Road. Visitation will be from 5-7 before the wake service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to Storybook Island.
DENNIS V. BRANT
Dennis Vance “Denny” Brant died Friday, October 28th at Golden Living Center in Rapid City. Dennis was born in St. Francis, Kansas on October 7th, 1935 to Frederick and Irma (Carson) Brant. His family moved to Ft. Collins, Colorado in 1938 when Dennis was three (3) years old. Dennis loved sports and exhilarated in football and wrestling. He graduated from Fort Collins High School in 1954. After graduation, Dennis joined the Navy and was stationed at Putuxent River, Maryland. He married Margaret (Margie) Richards in 1956 in Virginia. Together they moved around the country, raised 5 children and created many happy memories. Dennis enjoyed life to the fullest and had a way of making everyone smile. He was a devout Catholic who led by example. He was very active with his involvement in Cursillo. He was a Eucharistic Minister for over 10 years at Blessed Sacrament Church and retired as the church’s groundskeeper. By profession, Dennis had an entrepreneurial spirit and knew many trades including carpentry, masonry, plumbing, painting, roofing and mechanics to name a few. His passion was in sales because he was such a people person. Dennis was always eager to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He loved children and his grandchildren were the light of his life. For many years, Dennis and Margie enjoyed dressing up as Santa and Mrs. Claus, delivering packages to less fortunate children throughout the Rapid City area. He was also a true Bronco Fan all the way. Dennis lived with Diabetes for several years. After his first amputation, he was instrumental in starting an amputee support group in Rapid City and building handicap ramps for those in need. He was a wonderful son, husband, uncle, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. Dennis is survived by his wife Margie; children Susan Brant, Rapid City, F. Michael (Val) Brant, Rapid City, Dennis Patrick (Toni) Brant, Windsor, CO, and Jeff (Annette) Brant, Rapid City; nine grandchildren, Jason Kimura, Nichole (Sam) Farrar, Adrienne Harris, Kami (Ryan) Matheson, Skyler Brant, Samantha Brant, Amber Brant, Danielle Brant, Chelsea Scott; and one great granddaughter Keeley Farrar; two sisters Vernie Schwartz, Loveland, CO., Janice Marsh, Anaheim, California and all the special nieces and nephews. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents Frederick and Irma (Carson) Brant; brother, Jardine; sister, Larita and daughter, Sandra Harris. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday, November 3rd at Serenity Springs Funeral Home. Services will be Friday, November 4th at 10 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church. Burial will follow services at Mount Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dennis’ name to the Cole Christianson medical expense fund at Black Hills Federal Credit Union.
