AIKEN — A Mass of Christian Burial for Lt. Col. Sanroy “Jim” LeBert, USAF (Ret.), will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church with burial, with full military honors, in Sunset Memory Gardens. Walter Lewis
COLUMBIA — Services for Mr. Walter L. “Uncle Lewis” Lewis, 72, will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. (viewing at noon) at Francis Burns United Methodist Church, 5616 Farrow Road, Columbia, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery. Wake services will be held 6 p.m. this evening at Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel.
Walter Lewis was a golf member of the Ridgewood Golf Club. He also served 21 years in the United States Air Force and 22 years as an Engineer at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.
Surviving are his wife, Ida Lewis; son, son, Carl Lewis; mother, Edna M. Lewis; grandchildren, and other loved ones.
Joseph Lynch
TIMMONSVILLE — Joseph Hoyt “Buck” Lynch, 64, died October 26, 2004 in a Florence hospital. He was born in Olanta, S.C., a son of the late Hoyt and Elizabeth Strickland Lynch. He was foreman with Davey Tree Company where he had been employed for the past 45 years. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are his wife, Lillie Howard Lynch, Timmonsville; a son, Jody (Amy) Lynch, Timmonsville; 3 brothers, Gene (Candy) Lynch, Timmonsville, Phillip Lynch, Florence, Randy (Gail) Lynch, Florence; a sister, Margaret Harrell, Florence. He was predeceased by a brother, Jimmy Lynch, and a sister, Annie Ruth Lynch.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 28, 2004 at 3 o’clock in Lamar FreeWill Baptist Church. Interment will be in Sparrow Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery near Timmonsville, directed by Layton-Anderson Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home today, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

CHESTERFIELD — Services for Randy Thompson, 33, will be held at 3 p.m. today at Robinson AME Zion Church, Cheraw, with burial in Fishers Hill Cemetery. Reid’s Funeral Home is in charge. He died October 21, 2004.
Gloria Sharpe
WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Gloria Cooper Sharpe, 54, of West Columbia, will be held at 11am Thursday in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, officiated by Rev. Darrell Croft. Burial will follow at Fish Hatchery Church of God Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7pm Wednesday at the funeral home. Ms. Sharpe died Monday, October 25, 2004. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late James and Georgia Mae Cooper. A lifetime area resident, she was employed with Drivers Choice Car Insurance.
Surviving are her daughter, Tina Garner of West Columbia; sons and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Lisa Sharpe of West Columbia, Martin Sharpe of McCormick; brother, Gary Cooper; grandchildren, Crystal Garner, Shane Garner, Angel Garner, Christopher Sharpe, and Austin Sharpe. Ms. Sharpe was predeceased by her brother, Dale Cooper.
Charles Ross
AIKEN — Funeral services for Mr. Charles P. “Chuck” Ross, 74, of Englewood Road, Aiken, SC, who died October 25, 2004, will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Trinity United Methodist Church. Dr. Rodney K. Powell officiating. Interment in Pineview Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Ross was a native of Dearborn, Michigan, and a former resident of North Augusta for 23 years, having made Aiken his home for the past 24 years. Mr. Ross was a graduate and life-long supporter of Purdue University and earned his M.S. degree at Illinois University. In l953 immediately after graduate school, he joined DuPont de Nemours Corporation as a young Chemical Engineer at the young Savannah River Plant and moved with his wife Joyce to North Augusta. He worked mainly in Reactor Technology and the Savannah River Laboratory. In l976, he was appointed Superintendent of Fuel Fabrication and Nuclear Processes and moved his family to Wilmington, DE. In 1985-1990, he served as DuPont and then Westinghouse Savannah River Company Technical Advisor to the Department of Energy in Germantown, MD, after which he and Joyce returned to Aiken. After retirement, he pursued his passion for intellectual inquiry as an audit student of Philosophy and Literature at USCA. He was a voracious reader of (among other things) biographies and detective novels, and a traveler, with Joyce, to serene places. He demonstrated his unflinching compassion as a volunteer to Hitchcock Hospice and Mattie C. Hall as a private tutor and was 1997 Hitchcock Rehabilitation Volunteer of the Year for “Mr. Chuck’s” work with the preschool children. He showed his energetic love for his family in frequent visits, patient discussions, and frank hugs. He was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a member of the Board of Friends of the Aiken County Historical Museum. Chuck Ross was a man of honor and compassion.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Joyce Phillips Ross; a daughter, Sheryl Ross Bush, Aiken; three sons and daughters-in-law, David C. and Joni-Dee Ross, Summerfield, NC, Daniel P. and Sally Ross, West Lafayette, IN, Gary W. and Heidi Ross, Aiken; a brother and sister-in-law, David W. and Sara Ross, Austin, TX; grandchildren, Craig Ross, Lindsey Ross, Alexander Bush, Emily Bush, Eric Ross, Matthew Ross, Andrew Ross, Alexandra Greene, Matthew Yon, and Erica Thompson; great-granddaughter Skylar Thompson.
Pallbearers will be grandsons.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home this Wednesday evening from 7 to 9.

HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for Evelyne Davies Powell, 84, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 29, 2004 at First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Mrs. Powell died Tuesday, October 26, 2004. Born in Chattanooga, TN, she was a daughter of the late David Alvin and James Ophelia Knight Davies. She was a member of Hartsville First Presbyterian Church. She attended Winthrop College, served as secretary at Hartsville High School for four years, and was retired from Sonoco Products Company. She lived by the commandment, “Love thy neighbor.”
Surviving are her husband, Charles Powell of Hartsville, SC; daughter and son-in-law, Carole and Tom Croft of Hartsville, SC; grandchildren, Deborah Oelze, Thomas C. Croft, Daniel C. Croft, Catharine E. Croft; great-grandchildren, Eric Oelze, Erin Oelze, Taylar Croft, Chaz Croft.
Neil Branham
WEST COLUMBIA — Services for W. Neil Branham, 18, of West Columbia, will be held at 4pm Friday in Holland Avenue Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Charles Wilson and Rev. Greg Bolton. Burial will follow at Southland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Thursday at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Mr. Branham died Wednesday, October 27, 2004. Born in Lexington, he was the son of Cleveland H. “Cleve” Branham, Jr. and Audrey Odom Branham. A lifetime area resident, he was a member of Holland Avenue Baptist Church where he was very active in the Youth Group and worked in the Nursery. Mr. Branham was a high school senior at Glenforest School and was a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Neil was a wonderful son who loved nature, outdoors, fishing, and deer hunting. On October 27, 2004, in the “twinkling of an eye,” our son Neil left us here on earth and went to meet Jesus. We were blessed to have him with us for 18 very special years. We’ll miss him but we know we’ll have a joyous reunion soon.
Surviving, in addition to his parents of West Columbia, are his brother, Mark Derrick Branham of West Columbia; maternal grandparents, Harold G. Odom, Sr. and Deloris Shealy Odom of Lexington; paternal grandfather, Cleveland H. Branham, Sr. of Columbia; aunts and uncles, Donna and Jody Medders of Gaston; Jeanne O. Shull of West Columbia; Harold “Bill” and Marilyn Odom of Prosperity; cousins, Danielle Shull of Lexington, Rebecca and Barrett Platt of Camden, and Christopher Odom of Prosperity. Mr. Branham was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Alberta L. Busques.
Faye Berry
SPARTANBURG — Faye Gertrude Berry, 69, of 833 Hayne Street, died Monday, October 25, 2004, at her home after a long illness. A native of Tucapau, Spartanburg County, she was the daughter of the late Roy Melton “Red” Berry and Edna Gertrude Cannon Berry Fisher. She was also the step-daughter of the late Ernest Amaziah “Babe” Fisher, and was the widow of Lewis M. Gainey, Sr.
Faye had retired from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control Home Health Services. She was a member of Liberty United Methodist Church and formerly a member of Carlisle Wesleyan Church. Until her failing health forced her to curtail her research, she was active in local history and genealogical circles, having edited three books, and was the longtime co-editor of Upper South Carolina Genealogy & History. She was formerly a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
She is survived by, among others, her son, Joseph Russell “Joey” Gainey of the home; and one step-brother, Dr. James William Fisher, Regents Professor and Chairman, Emeritus, Department of Pharmacology, Tulane University School of Medicine, New Orleans, LA. She was predeceased by her step-brother, Alfred Emanuel Fisher of Columbia, SC.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday, October 28, 2004, at Floyd’s North Church Street Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 29, 2004, at Floyd’s North Church Street Chapel conducted by the Rev. Alan A. Woodward and the Rev. Dr. Thomas H. Norrell. Entombment will be in Good Shepherd Memorial Park Mausoleum.

BILOXI, Miss. — A graveside service for William DuPre Lyles, 75, formerly of Chester, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, October 29th, 2004 in Evergreen Cemetery, Chester, SC. Barron Funeral Home, Chester, SC is in charge of arrangements. Born in Greenville, SC to the late Arromanus Coleman and Ella Cross Lyles, he died October 24, 2004. Until retirement he was a sales representative in several states and a restaurant operator, primarily along the Gulf Coast. Surviving are brothers, Clarence C. Lyles, M.D., and his wife, Dorothy, of Spartanburg, SC, Rev. Dr. John Lyles and his wife, Carter, of Davidson, NC; sister-in-law, Jean Lyles of Bermuda, widow of his brother, Captain A.C. Mrs. Hambright died Wednesday, October 27, 2004 at Agape Senior Community, West Columbia where she had been a resident for six years. Born in Laurens County, SC in 1909, she was the daughter of the late Allie E. Hitt Turner and Wade H. Turner. She was a graduate and a retired employee of Winthrop College, Rock Hill, SC. At Winthrop, she was employed as Assistant to the Dean of Students for 25 years. She was a former member of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, Rock Hill. Mrs. Hambright was an active member of Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church in Chester until the time of her move to West Columbia in 1998. In Rock Hill, Mrs. Hambright was a member of the Amelia Pride Book Club, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and Business and Professional Women.
Mrs. Hambright was preceded in death by husbands, Wade H. Herring and Fred R. Hambright; her parents, three sisters and four brothers. She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Rose and Tam Burgess and Gwen and Dick Shaffer, all of Lexington, SC; granddaughters, Ann Booth and her husband, Lee of Charleston, WV, Beth Paetow and her husband, Dale of Cayce, SC, Sabra Corley and her husband, Buddy of Saluda, SC, and Cindy Shaffer of Greenwood, SC; great grandchildren, Hannah, Melissa, and Paul Corley of Saluda, SC, and Ryan Paetow of Cayce.
