William T. Crutchfield,
former securities official

William T. Crutchfield succeeded in business through character and perseverance.

"His success throughout his life was attributed to his underlying philosophy that there's no such word as 'can't,' " said his oldest daughter, Laurie Leonard of Indian Hill.

"He always taught us that the only thing that matters about someone is how they look at and treat other people, and that no deal is a good deal unless it is good for all parties."

Mr. Crutchfield, 76, died Saturday at his home in Indian Hill.

He was a former vice president of Thompson McKinnon Securities, a current board member of the Vulcan Corporation, and a former employee of Procter and Gamble and W.E. Hutton.

A shrewd financial analyst, Mr. Crutchfield keep running notes on the market, waking up early to keep tabs on the world before Wall Street opened.

Mr. Crutchfield graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in mechanical engineering. He passed up a football scholarship at the University of Minnesota to serve as a first lieutenant during World War II. He married his high school sweetheart, Mickey Bausch, who died in 1993.

Other survivors: daughters, Carol C. Wiggers of Indian Hill and Kathy Anderson and Amy C. Meyer, and seven grandchildren.

Services: Noon Wednesday at Norman Chapel in Spring Grove Cemetery. Memorials: Walnut Hills High School or Visiting Nurses Association. Bolton and Lunsford Funeral Home in charge of services.

William Mussey was
legislator, publisher

William H. Mussey, 86, a former Ohio state legislator and retired publisher for the Clermont Sun, died Friday.

Mr. Mussey was elected to the Ohio House of Represenatives in 1965 and served for six years, then served six years in the Ohio Senate. He lived in Gallipolis, Ohio, but formerly lived in Batavia.

Services: 1 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church of Batavia. Visitation: 11 a.m. today at church. Cremeens Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Clement Hils, former FBI agent

Clement L. Hils, a retired FBI agent and former chief U.S. federal probation officer in Cincinnati, died Monday.

Mr. Hils, 73, lived in Edgewood, Ky.

He was also former chairman of the Cincinnati chapter of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI and was a World War II veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Janet Darbro Hils; sons, Steve Hils of Cincinnati and Andrew Hils of Lexington, Ky; daughters, Carrie Hanscom of Walton, Ky., and Gretchen Hils of Madison, Wis.; sisters, Ellen May Goeke of Fort Wright, Ky., Ann Welch of Indianapolis, Joan Schulte of Fort Mitchell, Ky., Mary Rose Hils and Joyce Blanchet, both of Crestview Hills, Ky.; brothers, Jude Hils of Crescent Springs, Ky., Dave Hils of Cincinnati and Martin "Mote" Hils of Erlanger, Ky, and four grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Pius X Church, Edgewood. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Thursday. Memorials are suggested to St. Xavier High School Scholarship Fund, 600 North Bend Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45224; or Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI Education Fund, P. O. Box 1027, 715 Broadway, Quantico, Va. 22134. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Ralph Lloyd Poore was a family person

Ralph Lloyd Poore made sure his family members were taken care of. If they needed anything, he made sure they had it.

"Ralph was just a family person," said his wife of 61 years, Jewel Justice Poore. "His family always came first."

Mr. Poore, 76, of Walton, Ky., died Monday at Grant Manor Nursing Home, Williamstown.

He was a retired truck driver with Roadway Express and a member of Gum Lick Baptist Church. A Mason for more than 50 years, Mr. Poore was a member of the Crittenden Masonic Lodge, his wife said.

David M. Fiala, lawyer, volunteer

David M. Fiala, an attorney and a volunteer, died Monday after a short illness. He was 53.

A private practice attorney, Mr. Fiala volunteered at public broadcasting station WCET for many years.

A graduate of University of Cincinnati and Chase College of Law, he went on to specialize in individual tax, estate planning and administration.

"He gave a lot of his time. He did a lot of pro bono work informally that a lot of people didn't know about," said his wife, Nancy Stewart Fiala.

"A lot of his older clients, he would drive to their house."

Mr. Fiala began volunteering at WCET in 1969 after watching an Action Auction and eventually served on the board of trustees, including four years as chairman. He received a Key to the City of Cincinnati for his involvement.

He was also a trustee of Junior Achievement of Greater Cincinnati and a former member of the advisory committee of the American Culinary Federation, the executive committee of the Contemporary Dance Theatre and the executive committee of the Mental Health Services West Board.

"He really genuinely enjoyed people," Mrs. Fiala said. "I loved him very much." Mr. Fiala is also survived by his son Michael Fiala McGowen, of Western Hills, and his sister, Elaine Rosales, of Brecksville, Ohio. Services private. In lieu of flowers, memorials to WCET, 1223 Central Parkway, Cincinnati, 45214.

ROBERT L. NEU, 85, of Hamersville, Ohio, died Wednesday. He worked for the Ohio Valley Antique Machinery Association, and he was a school bus driver for the Hamersville and Western Brown school districts. Vera Poe, 81, lent helping hand

Vera D. Poe didn't just talk about lending a helping hand, she put her words in to action, says her husband of 57 years, Leonard Poe.

"She was warm and friendly; she never saw a stranger," he said.

He noted, for example, that Mrs. Poe helped people at church get their cancer treatments and formed close relationships with two widows who were in her adult Sunday school class.

"She promised them they wouldn't be alone," Mr. Poe said. "We took them every place they wanted to go."

Mrs. Poe, 81, of Erlanger, Ky., died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence, Ky. She was a retired clerk for Lazarus and an active member of Fort Mitchell Baptist Church.

Other survivors: sons, James T. Poe of Erlanger and Thomas R. Poe Sr. of Florence; a sister, Ruth E. Hammond of Brooksville, Fla.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery, Stamping Ground. Memorials: Fort Mitchell Baptist Church, 2323 Dixie Highway, Fort Mitchell, Ky. 41017.
