Ivan Perkins, restaurant founder
Ivan P. Perkins, co-founder of Perkins family restaurants, was a colorful, innovative businessman who encouraged independence, his family recalled.
Mr. Perkins, 83, of Kenwood, died Wednesday.
Mr. Perkins and his brother, Matthew, founded the restaurant chain in 1958. Two years later they began franchising the restaurants by selling the name for use across the nation. The brothers later sold the restaurant chain, which is now based in Memphis, Tenn.
Today, the Perkins chain includes 462 restaurants in 32 states.
Mr. Perkins encouraged his family to be independent. "He always wanted us to go out and make it on our own," recalled a daughter, Helen Follmer.
Mr. Perkins founded the Perkins Bakery in Silverton in 1948 and sold packaged mixes for cakes, pie crusts, biscuits and pancakes in grocery stores under the Perkins name.
He also developed a process for freezing fresh bakery goods for transport to other stores.
Mr. Perkins was born in Fraser, Colo. and moved to Alaska in the 1930s to supervise kitchens at a gold mine. During World War II, he worked in Covington, Ky., as the superintendent of a commercial bakery.
He served as a member of Silverton City Council in the 1950s.
Mr. Perkins also leaves his wife, Cecilia Perkins; sons, Michael Perkins and Dr. Patrick Perkins, daughters, Kathleen Widup, Peggy Perkins and Marlene Sullivan; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services: Mass at 10 a.m. Saturday at All Saints Catholic Church, Kenwood.
Visitation: 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today at the Thomas-Justin Memorial, 7500 Montgomery Road, Kenwood.

Carl F. Tuke, bank executive
Carl F. Tuke, an executive with Eagle Savings and Loan, died Wednesday at the Seasons Retirement Community in Kenwood. He was 84.
The native Cincinnatian's business career focused on his family firms - Fred Tuke & Son Realtors and Eagle Savings and Loan - both founded by his grandfather, Fred Tuke, in 1883. The real estate management firm oversaw more than 3,500 properties in downtown Cincinnati during the Depression.
Mr. Tuke was instrumental in the development of Eagle Savings and Loan as a director and officer, making it the largest thrift in Hamilton County by 1966.
Three years later, he negotiated the sale of Eagle Savings and Loan to Western and Southern - at the time the largest sale of any savings and loan in Ohio. He remained a director until 1980.
He also served as an officer and director of Mayflower Savings and Loan Co. until 1979.
A World War II U.S. Air Force veteran, he was involved in one of the longest air battles of 1943, bombing Regansburg, Germany.
Mr. Tuke held degrees from Xavier University and a law degree from University of Cincinnati. He was a member of the Cincinnati Bar Association and the Cincinnati Board of Realtors. In 1995, he endowed an academic scholarship at Xavier University.
He leaves his wife, Alice Doench Tuke; son, Carl Jr.; daughter Cynthia Tuke Sheakley; five grandchildren; and brothers Robert E. Tuke and L. James Tuke, all of Cincinnati.

Russell Green, Batesville businessman
Russell W. Green, president of Union Furniture Co. in Batesville, Ind., died Friday. He was 82.
Mr. Green served as president or chief of a number of civic groups in Batesville. He was a past Grand Knight and a district deputy for the Knights of Columbus Council No. 1461; past director of the National Association of Furniture Manufacturers; and past president of Hillcrest Country Club, Batesville Junior Chamber of Commerce and Batesville Chamber of Commerce. He was a former member of the Batesville Re-Development Commission.
He also was one of the first Eagle Scouts in Batesville and later served as a scoutmaster.
