Edward Burden, former lawmaker

Edward B. Burden, 72, a real estate broker and former Ohio state legislator, died Saturday at Hospice of Cincinnati.

"He was a very outspoken person, a very hardworking person," said former Ohio House Majority Leader William Mallory, who served with Mr. Burden in the Ohio House.

A graduate of Woodward High School, Mr. Burden attended Xavier University, the University of Cincinnati and Chase Law School. He served in the U.S. Navy and began selling real estate in Cincinnati in 1957. He formed the Edward B. Burden Real Estate Co. in Avondale, later renamed Edward B. Burden & Associates.

He was appointed to the Ohio House of Representatives, representing the 69th district, in Feb ruary 1970 and served out the term of then Rep. William Bowen through December 1970.

Mr. Burden, of Paddock Hills, was a trustee of the Over-the-Rhine Redevelopment Co., a past president of the Cincinnati Association of Real Estate Brokers and was on the board of directors of the Ohio Association of Real Estate Brokers.

He enjoyed gospel music and sang tenor with the Soul Stirs, an ensemble, and for six years was lead singer of the United Christian Brotherhood.

Mr. Burden leaves his wife of 50 years, Peggy; sisters, Melvina Globe of Bond Hill and Early Williams of Kennedy Heights; and brothers, Warren Burden of Bond Hill and John Burden of Silverton.

Services were at the New Prospect Baptist Church, Over-the-Rhine.

John Allen, usher for Reds

For 35 years, John Kenneth Allen lived out a sports fantasy.

Mr. Allen became an usher for the Cincinnati Reds at Crosley Field in 1962 and became an usher for the city's newest sports team - the Cincinnati Bengals - in 1968, when the team debuted.

"He loved baseball and football, and loved to be close to the games," said a grandson, Paul Gazar.

Mr. Allen, 77, of Anderson Township, died Tuesday. He had retired from ushering last year when he became ill with cancer.

He worked for 42 years at Seimens Allis in Norwood.

Mr. Allen also was a member of the American Legion Post No. 484 in Anderson Township and the Disabled American Veterans.

He was a member of Guardian Angels Church in Mt. Washington .

He is survived by his wife, Rosemary; a daughter, Barbara Allen of Eastgate; two other grandchildren and a great granddaughter.

Mass was today at Guardian Angels Church. T.P.

White and Sons Funeral Home, Mt. Washington, handled arrangements. Memorials: American Cancer Society.

Sister Marie Rose Kunkel, pastoral minister

Sister Marie Rose Kunkel, a 56-year member of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati, died June 27. She was 82.

Early in her career, she was assigned to the Villa Nazareth Orphanage in Rome. In 1957, she returned to the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and taught in southwestern Ohio.

Sister Marie Rose was a pastoral minister for 17 years at Corpus Christi Parish in Dayton, serving the sick, elderly and homebound. She was a board member of Corner Cupboard Charities in Dayton.

She leaves sisters Mary Margaret Dunigan of Indianapolis and Frieda Zugelder of Springfield, Ohio; and a brother, Joseph Kunkel of Springfield.

Memorial Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Corpus Christi Church.

Memorials: Corner Cupboard Charities, Dayton, or the Cardinal Tardini Charitable Trust for Villa Nazareth, via Sisters of Charity, 5900 Delhi Road, Mount St. Joseph, Ohio, 45051.

James Bertsch, top student and athlete

The achievements of James Francis Bertsch's young life were numerous, exceeded only by his love for family and dedication to his studies.

Class salutatorian at Newport High School in 1996, athlete and college honor student, Mr. Bertsch died Friday of injuries suffered in a farm accident.

Mr. Bertsch, 19, lived in Southgate, Ky., and was a sophomore at Thomas More College.

He was on a full scholarship at Thomas More, where he majored in mathematics and physics. He was a member of St. Therese Church.

He leaves his parents, Ronald L. and Janet Weyer Bertsch; brothers, Ron Bertsch, Ken Bertsch and Andy Bertsch; and sisters, Cheryl Spahr and Katie Bertsch.

Arrangements: Dobbling Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Memorials: James F. Bertsch Memorial Scholarship Fund, Fifth-Third Bank, Newport.
