India Boyer, pioneering architect
India Boyer was a pioneering female architect who inspired others to meet life's challenges. Ms. Boyer, 90, of Mt. Washington, died Monday.
The Ohio State University graduate was the first registered woman architect in Ohio.
"India was our role model, our mentor, as well as a dear friend. She encouraged us all in our activities and supported us in all our challenges," said longtime friend, Helen Cooper Howe.
After graduation in 1930, she established a practice, then joined the Corps of Engineers in Cincinnati. After the Ohio River flood in 1937, she traveled throughout the state inspecting flood-control projects. During World War II she designed airports, housing, hospitals, supply depots, warehouses and special war plants.
In 1941, she was accepted as a member of the American Institute of Architects, and in 1945 she joined Vogt, Ivers and Associates in Cincinnati. She retired in 1975 and continued to work as a consultant for Hamilton County schools and park district.
She was a Distinguished Alumna of Ohio State, Outstanding Alumna of Phi Mu National Sorority and a YWCA Woman of Achievement. In 1994, the India Boyer Guild of Women Architects was established in Cincinnati.
She was a member of the Retired Engineers and Scientists of Cincinnati, Altrusa and Walnut Hills Baptist Church. She leaves a niece and several great-nieces.

Merlin Pope Jr., diversity consultant
Merlin G. Pope Jr., who headed diversity consultant firms that counseled executives of companies including Procter & Gamble, Ford, General Motors and Chevron, died Tuesday. He was 55.
In 1976, he co-founded Behavioral Science Applications Inc. In 1983, Mr. Pope began Pope & Associates Inc., which remains one of the nation's oldest diversity consulting companies. Mr. Pope's wife of 18 years, Patricia, is president of the company.
Mr. Pope and his employees provided corporate customers with training in cultural and racial diversity, to combat discrimination in the workplace. His customers included managers and employees at numerous Fortune 500 companies.
Mr. Pope attended Kent State University and was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He earned post-graduate degrees at the University of Akron and Yale University.
He also leaves his mother, Alene, a daughter and two sons. Arrangements are pending.

William Henley, was Newport police chief
Former Newport police chief William F. Henley died Tuesday.
Mr. Henley, 67, of Newport, joined the police department in 1952 and was named chief in 1979, serving about two years. He later became the head of security at the Fourth and Vine Tower in Cincinnati. He was a former member of Fraternal Order of Police and the Police Chief Association of Kentucky. He was an Army veteran of the
Korean War.
He leaves children Michael A. Henley and Pamela Jean Hall, both of Newport; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Kenneth Davis: police officer, ballplayer
No matter where he was or what he was doing, former Cincinnati police Officer Kenneth Davis found a way to make baseball a part of his life.
He played the game as a kid in Cincinnati. He followed professional teams from afar when he fought in the South Pacific during World War II. And he played in the Negro Leagues for several years after the war.
"Baseball was his No. 1 passion," recalled his son, Kenneth Davis Jr.
Mr. Davis, the father of three, died Saturday. He was 72.
After reaching the rank of sergeant with the U.S. Marines, Mr. Davis returned home from the war and signed up to play pro ball. Since Major League Baseball was still segregated, he played in the Negro Leagues for the Philly Meteors and the Homestead Grays. In 1950, Mr. Davis returned to Cincinnati and joined the police division, where he became the first African American assigned to homicide. He retired in 1979 and opened a neighborhood bar, Ken's Tavern.
When his children were growing up, he spent many years coaching Little League baseball for his sons' teams.
He also leaves son, Paul Davis and daughter, Shelley Wilson, both of Cincinnati; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Robert Jahnigen, Cincinnati Bell executive
Former Cincinnati Bell Telephone executive Robert P. Jahnigen, 76, died Monday at Twin Towers Health Center in College Hill.
Mr. Jahnigen, who began his career with the company as an installer, retired as manager of plants, grounds and buildings. He also served as the company's representative on the Cincinnati Beautiful Committee and the Queen City Tours Committee.
Mr. Jahnigen was a longtime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and served as the regional secretary and treasurer for many years. He belonged to the Oakley Methodist Church and Hyde Park Bethlehem United Methodist Church after a merger of the two churches.
He was a 50-year member of the Dan Beard Council of the Boy Scouts of America and volunteered as a tour guide at the Cincinnati Fire Museum. In 1987, he won the Jacob P. Davis Volunteer of the Year Award and donated the $10,000 prize money to the museum.
Mr. Jahnigen leaves his wife, Sue Lippman Jahnigen; sons, Robert E. Jahnigen of San Francisco, Dennis W. Jahnigen of Denver, and Rick Jahnigen of Blue Ash; sister, Ruth Connelly of College Hill; brother, Harry E. Jahnigen of Sycamore Township; and five grandchildren.
