Dawn Wright

OTSDAWA — Dawn Wright, 40, of Otsdawa, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at M.I. Bassett Hospital following a lengthy illness.

She was born Feb. 28, 1960, in Walton, the daughter of Paul D. and Carole (Smith) Faulkner.

Dawn was a former employee of Sanyo of America in Oneonta.

She has been a lifelong area resident.

She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Carole and Gordon Finch Sr.; three children, Tonya Newell of Syracuse, Taryn and Zak Wright of Sidney; her friend, Brian Yager, of Otsdawa; a brother and sister-in-law, Gordon and Carol Finch Jr., and a sister, Barbara Cumm, both of Sidney Center; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. In addition, Dawn is survived by many close friends, including Jackie and Ron Simmons and Royce Yager.

A private memorial service will be held later at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Phyllis Kelly

BAINBRIDGE — Phyllis Kelly, 74, of 454 Ives Settlement Road, Bainbridge, N.Y., died May 9, 2000, at the Hospice of Southwest Florida, Port Charlotte, Fla.

She was born April 28, 1926, in Manchester, England, the daughter of Samuel and Sophia Frieze.

Phyllis was a legal secretary and during her career worked for Pfizer, ASCAP, Sen. Marino and others in the New York area.

She is survived by her husband, Alan Kelly, of Bainbridge (Guilford), N.Y.; her son, David Janowitz, of Long Beach, N.Y.; a sister, Muriel Wienberger, of Lake Worth, Fla.; a granddaughter, Janine Everett; and two great-grandchildren, Anthony and Andrea Everett, of  Washington, N.C.

Karl H. Kleusch

ONEONTA — Karl H. Kleusch, 89, of Oneonta, died Saturday, July 29, 2000, at Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta, following a short illness.

He was born in Germany. He and his wife, Charlotte, came to the United States from Germany in 1949. He worked on Long Island for the U.S. Aero Space Program until his retirement in 1983, at which time he moved to Oneonta.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte, of Oneonta.

A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Robert W. Ellis Sr.

SHARON SPRINGS — Robert "Bob" W. Ellis Sr., 62, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at home following a long illness.

Born in Granville, he was a 1956 graduate of Grand Gorge Central School, where he earned varsity letters in soccer, basketball and baseball and was a member of the New York State Championship soccer team from Grand Gorge. Bob also played semi-pro soccer for the U.S. Army in Germany.

He owned and operated Sharon Tavern in Sharon Springs for 20 years, retiring in 1998. Prior to that he owned Complete Boiler Service in Williamsport, Pa., for 10 years and worked in maintenance for Sheffield Dairy Farms for many years.

Bob was a member of the Sharon Springs Volunteer Rescue Squad and Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as captain of the Fire Police for many years. He served as president of the Sharon Chamber of Commerce in 1979 and he also was affiliated with the Schoharie County Fire Police Association.

Survivors include his wife, Susan A. Ellis; two sons, Robert W. Ellis, Jr., of Florida and Herbert J. Ellis of Bridgewater; a daughter, Lori J. Bartlett of Sharon Springs; his mother, Lola Ellis of Wynantskill; a sister, Mary Smith of East Greenbush; seven grandchildren and one stepgranddaughter.

Services will be held at 11a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at the Cornerstone Baptist Church, Route 10, Ames, where a reception will follow in the church hall.

Burial will be in Slate Hill Cemetery, town of Sharon.

Calling hours will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at the Lappeus Funeral Home, 32 Park St., Sharon Springs.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sharon Springs Booster Club, c/o Sharon Springs Central School, P.O. Box 218, Sharon Springs, N.Y. 13459.

Martin H. Epp Jr.

WESTFORD — Martin H. Epp Jr., 74, of county Highway 36-A, town of Westford, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at his home.

He was born on July 10, 1926, in North Hempstead, a son of Martin H. and Marguerite Marie (Tierney) Epp Sr. He married Greta Helbig on June 3, 1950, in Williston Park, Long Island. Gerta died on July 19, 1998.

Following his graduate from Mineola High School, Marty enlisted in the Army Air Corps during World War II and served as a crew chief for the A-26 Invader in the Pacific Theatre of Operations.

After his discharge from the military, he studied arts at the Pratt Institute in New York City. For most of his career, Marty freelanced as a commercial artist and as a stage set designer in New York City and throughout the United States. At one time he was employed by Archie publications outlining for the Archie comic strip and Casper the Friendly Ghost. He also had been employed as the arts director at the Fannon and Osmond Art House in New York City.

Marty enjoyed many interests during his life, including aviation and sports car racing. As a member of the Sports Car Club of America, he was a nationally ranked driver, scoring several wins at Bridge Hampton, Watkins Glen and Lime Rock, as well as other tracks on the East Coast. For two consecutive years Marty was the Eastern Motor Racing Association's Sports Car Champion.

Above all else, Marty enjoyed being the life of the party.

He attended Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown and was a charter member of the Madison Avenue Sports Car Drivers and Chowder Society in New York City.

Marty is survived by a son, Brian Epp, and his wife, Kathleen Marie, of Durango,  Colo.; a brother, Robert Epp, and his wife, Mary, of Stuart, Fla.; a sister, June Coleman and her husband, Doug, of Port St. Lucie Fla.; two grandchildren, Chris and Renny Young, of Durango,  Colo.; his mother-in-law, Anna Helbig, of Cooperstown; a sister-in-law, Trudi Shanahan, of Monroe, Conn.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a daughter, Karen G. Epp, who died Nov. 29, 1974.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Canon George F. French, rector emeritus of Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Westville Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from noon until the time of the service, when the family will in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Central New York Chapter, 1508 Genesee St., Utica, N.Y. 13502.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

George Terpenning

STROUDSBURG, Pa. — George L. Terpenning, 87, of Stroudsburg, Pa., died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at his residence. He was the husband of Virginia (Bresee) Terpenning, who survives, at home.

Born on Nov. 10, 1912, in Oneonta, he was a son of the late George H. and Myrtle M. (Anderson) Terpenning. A graduate of the University of Michigan with an MBA, he was a retired executive with General Motors Corp.

Surviving in addition to his wife are his children, Mrs. Adrian (Diane) A. Thoman of Columbia, S.C., Mrs. Rodney (Linda) C. Gunn of Philadelphia; a sister, Ella Rutan of Sebring, Fla.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother-in-law, Jack Bresee and his wife, Janet, of Oneonta and a sister-in-law, Jeanne (Bresee) Bates and her husband, Clyde, of Madison, Conn.

Graveside services and burial will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta, with the Rev. John Dawson, Catskill Area Hospice chaplain, officiating.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Martin H. Epp Jr.

COOPERSTOWN — Martin H. Epp Jr., 74, of County Highway 36-A, Town of Westford, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at his home.

Marion L. Dudley

MERIDIAN — Marion L. Dudley, 78, of Meridian, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at Community General Hospital, Syracuse, after a lengthy illness.

She was born on April 19, 1922, in Lysander, the daughter of Glen and Grace (Marvin) Blakeman.

She married Edwin G. Dudley on Feb. 1, 1947.

She received a bachelor's degree in music education from Syracuse University and took post-graduate studies in music and history from Columbia University, State University College at Oswego, Auburn Community College and Cooperstown Seminars in American History.

She taught vocal music at Cato-Meridian Central School from 1945-1947. She returned to teaching in 1967 as a seventh-grade social studies teacher, retiring in 1983. Since 1984, she has served as historian for the town of Cato and village of Meridian.

She was the organist and choir director for 52 years at the Meridian Baptist Church, accompanist for the Red Creek Community Players during the 1980s and pianist for the Milt Doty-Bob Cole Dance Band, the Lee Sisters and the Cato Chapter 234 Eastern Star. Throughout her life Marion helped countless high school students prepare for and perform at New York State School Music Association solo competitions.

Her interests included genealogy, the life of Thomas  Jefferson, New York state history, antique auctions and classical music, which she pursued with enthusiasm. She was a member and past clerk of the Meridian Baptist Church, Civic Heritage of Cato, the New York State Historical Association, and during the 1960s, the New York State Farm Bureau.

She was predeceased by her husband, Edwin, in 1998.

Survivors include her constant companion, Squeaker; four children and their spouses, Paul (Kathryn) Dudley of Meridian, Martha (Michael) Gerrety of Baldwinsville, Joan (Jeffrey) Baker of Fair Haven and Ruth (Brian) Wilson of Oneonta; six grandchildren, Todd Dudley of Liverpool, Jennifer (Todd) Cerio of Baldwinsville, Glen Dudley of Meridian, Holly and David Gerrety of Baldwinsville and Jerry Wilson of Oneonta. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Arlene Blakeman of Phoenix, and several cousins. She followed with devotion the lives of her 10 nieces and nephews, their spouses and children.

A memorial service will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at the Meridian Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tom Cornell officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Meridian Baptist Church or Civic Heritage.

Arrangements are by Greenleaf Funeral Home, 503 W. Onondaga St., Syracuse., N.Y. 13204.

Charles Youmans

OVIEDO, Fla. — Dr. Charles L. Youmans Jr., a resident of Oviedo, Fla., and Glendale,  Calif., passed away Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, after a short illness.

Born in Yonkers, N.Y., Dr. Youmans was a clinical psychologist in private practice for almost 50 years.

A 1945 graduate of Dartmouth College, he completed his master's and doctoral studies at Tulane University in New Orleans and Columbia University in New York.

He was the son of the late Charles and Edna Huott Youmans.

He was an Air Force bomber pilot in World War II, completing more than 40 combat missions. He retired from the Air Force Reserve as a lieutenant colonel in 1973.

He married the former Phyllis Anne Kloeti in 1947, and settled in Oneonta, N.Y., where he was first a professor of psychology and later department chairman at Hartwick College in Oneonta.

Dr. Youmans remained in private practice in Oneonta for more than 30 years. He was actively involved in the community, serving on numerous boards and committees, including the Oneonta school board and Kiwanis.

An avid traveler, Dr. Youmans traveled to more than 200 countries around the world. After his first wife passed away, he met and later married another world traveler, the former Joan C. Shimmel of Glendale,  Calif. Together they visited more than 100 countries together.

He is survived by his wife, Joan C.; and four children and their spouses, Charles L. III and Betty of New Hartford, N.Y., Cory and Julie of Winter Springs, Fla., Christine Allen and Scott of Michigan City, Ind., and Bob and Kathy of Apopka, Fla. He also leaves six grandchildren, Jenny and CJ Youmans, Megan, Kelli and Jamie Allen and Sara Youmans. Dr. Youmans leaves two sisters, Joan Cozens of Nantucket, Mass., and Janine Todaro of Gainesville, Ga. He also leaves numerous nephews and nieces.

He was a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church in Winter Springs.

Charlie Youmans will be remembered for his sense of humor and his great love for his family.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Christian Sharing Center Program, 950 North Central Blvd., Oviedo, Fla. 32765.

Richard E. Hildebrandt

COOPERSTOWN — Richard E. Hildebrandt of Lakeview Drive, Cooperstown, passed away Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Hildebrandt was born in New York City, the son of Henry and Claire (Siebeneichen) Hildebrandt.

He was a graduate of City College with a degree in geology and received his graduate degree from Columbia University.

On July 19, 1933, he was married to Helen Dalton Hildebrandt.

A World War II veteran, he served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy's Air Section of the Hawaiian Sea Frontier from 1943 to 1945.

He started his career in education as a teacher and as an assistant principal at Clark Jr. High School in New York followed by several years teaching at Anderson School in Westchester County.

Mr. Hildebrandt is survived by four grandchildren, Kristin H. and Marlon A. Shields of Glastonbury, Conn., V. Jeannie and Brian R. Maitland of Windsor, Conn., Richard R. and Paula V. Erickson of South Glastonbury, Conn., and David J. Erickson of Newport; seven great-grandchildren, Katie, Alex, Matthew, David, Cameron, Chase and Nina.

He was predeceased by his wife, Helen; his only child, Valerie H. Erickson; his brother, Albert H. Hildebrandt; and his sister, Claire A. Shaw.

A private family memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at 1 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with Fr. John Rosson, pastor of St. Mary's Church "Our Lady of the Lake," officiating.

Burial will be at a later date at the convenience of the family in Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be sent to the MS Society at 1155 Silas Deane Highway, Wethersfield, Conn. 06109.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

James V. Monahan

BAINBRIDGE — James V. Monahan, 77, of 32 Juliand St., Bainbridge, a beloved father, grandfather and friend, passed away Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at his home, following a short illness.

He was born Aug. 7, 1922, in Afton, the son of Ralph and Grace (Lord) Monahan.

He was married to Arlene Orth on June 26, 1943, in Deposit. Mrs. Monahan passed away Jan. 1, 1999.

Mr. Monahan was a lifelong Bainbridge resident, formerly owned and operated a plumbing, electrical and heating business in Bainbridge, was a retired building trade teacher with BOCES in Binghamton and a former Bainbridge village trustee and former mayor of the village of Bainbridge.

He enjoyed woodworking, building clocks and was an avid walker.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Gary LeFever of Unadilla; two sons and a daughter-in-law, William and Cathy Monahan of Bothell, Wash., and Larry Monahan of Norwich; a sister, Alice Wearne of Afton; his grandchildren, Jamie, Shawn, Todd and Trevor LeFever and Joshua and Melissa Monahan; and his great-grandchildren, Kasey and Cassie O'Hara.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla, with Pastor Wayne Burnett of Bainbridge officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 1 p.m. until service time, when the family will be in attendance.

Relatives and friends are invited to the Monahan residence at 32 Juliand St., Bainbridge, following the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Chenango County, Norwich, or the American Cancer Society.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.
