William M. Langdon
YONKERS — William M. Langdon, 82, of Yonkers, died Thursday, March 25, 1999, in Manhattan.

He was born Oct. 25, 1916, in Brooklyn, the son of Charles D. and Ann (Genirs) Langdon.

He married Eloise Harsnett on June 26, 1948, in Yonkers, who survives.

They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year.

He worked for CARE for more than 40 years, traveling to many different countries including Kenya, Indonesia, Egypt, India, Columbia and Bolivia. He was director of CARE's Food for Peace Program.

He was a member of St. Theresa's Catholic Church, New Berlin.

He served in the United States Army during World War II as a 1st Lt. in the 163 Field Artillery in the Philippines and New Guinea. He was a decorated veteran, receiving the Bronze Star and Air Medal for Bravery.

He was a great basketball and baseball player, playing on his Richmond Hill High School team, in Queens, as a first baseman with Phil Rizzuto, where they won the city championship. He was a man of extreme integrity, kindness, honor and exceptional devotion to his family's needs. He also had a wonderful sense of humor.

William is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Gregory "Gerard" and Jeannie Loh Langdon of Oneonta; one daughter, Heidi Langdon of Yonkers; and one granddaughter, Alexandra "Xandry" Langdon.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 1, 1999, at 10 a.m. at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, New Berlin, with Fr. Francis Case, of St. Theresa's Catholic Church, New Berlin. Interment will be in Columbus Corners Cemetery, town of Columbus, at a later date.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, March 31, 1999, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Emil Wilhelm
NEW LISBON — Emil Wilhelm, 73, of New Lisbon, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, at his home in New Lisbon.

He was born Sept. 25, 1925, in Brooklyn, the son of Emil and Marie (Grivel) Wilhelm.

He married Elfrieda Wobido on Aug. 24, 1951, in Suffolk. They had resided in New Lisbon since 1989, and were formerly of Merrick. Before moving to New Lisbon, Emil was a very active member of the Freeport Rifle and Revolver Club.

Emil is survived by his wife, Elfrieda of New Lisbon; a son, Ken Wilhelm, and his wife, Martha, of Schenevus; his sisters, Helen Self of Freeport and Mary Lou Broskin and her husband, Gerald, of Rock Hill; a sister-in-law, Ann Molloy of New Lisbon; grandchildren include Brett, Elise and Katie Wilhelm; nieces and nephews include Donna and Cynthia Gerald; and a great-niece, Amie Prescott.

Cremation took place at the Hillington Crematory in Morris. Memorial services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make donations to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in Emil's memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Reginald D. Hillis
DAVENPORT — Reginald Hillis, 90, a native of Davenport, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, at the Bennington, Vt., Care Center, after a long period of declining health.

Reginald was born Sept. 6, 1908, in Davenport, the son of Fred and Maude (Sprague) Hillis.

He graduated from the Davenport High School in 1927, and then moved to the Schenectady area, where he worked for the General Electric Co., over a period of many years.

In 1941, he married Viola, who died in 1977. Then in 1979, he married Thelma, who survives.

Reginald is also survived by two children, Nancy of  Pennsylvania and Duane of Massachusetts; as well as five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Reginald's only brother, Donald, died in 1975.

On Saturday, April 3, 1999, a prayer service will be held at 10 a.m., in the Davenport Methodist Church, where the family had been faithful members many years ago. The committal will immediately follow at the Fred Hillis Family Plot in the Davenport Cemetery.

Helen Skaza
ONEONTA — Mrs. Helen Skaza, 94, of Oneonta, died Sunday morning, March 28, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born in Germany on March 10, 1905, the daughter of Johan and Wilomina Klings.

She married George Skaza, who predeceased her.

Helen is survived by a daughter and a son-in-law, Diane and John Parks of Harleysville, Pa.; a son and a daughter-in-law, Charles and Barbara Reynolds of Franklin; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one niece.

A service to celebrate the life of Helen Skaza will be held on Friday, April 9, 1999, at 7 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Richard Breuninger officiating. Burial will be at the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Iva M. Saxton
COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Iva M. Saxton, 93, of the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home and formerly of Delaware Street in Cooperstown, died Monday morning, March 29, 1999, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born on Feb. 18, 1906, in Cooperstown, a daughter of Lester and Maude (Chamberlain) McRorie.

She married the Rev. Harold J. Saxton on Aug. 24, 1926, in Albany. The Rev. Saxton died on April 19, 1988.

A lifelong resident of Cooperstown, Mrs. Saxton graduated from the Cooperstown High School in 1923. She worked as a cashier at the New York Telephone Company office and the New York State Electric and Gas Corp. office, both in Cooperstown. She and her husband operated Saxton's Grocery Store on Beaver Street in Cooperstown, where she served as cashier until the store was sold in 1963.

Mrs. Saxton was a member of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, the Ellen Littell Missionary Circle, the Cornell Cooperative Extension, and the Otsego-Hartwick Chapter No. 201, Order of the Eastern Star, in Cooperstown.

Iva is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Douglas C. and Edna (Perrie) Saxton of West Oneonta; two granddaughters and their husbands, Constance and Ed Gross Jr. of Wells Bridge and Kathryn and Anthony Weagley of Union, N.J.; one great-granddaughter, Jessica Gross; three stepgrandsons and their wives, Richard and Robin Wright, Mark and Colleen Wright and David and Geraldine Wright; four stepgreat-grandsons; one stepgreat-granddaughter; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Leona Oxley of Rensselaer, Mrs. Mary Elisabeth (Betty) McRorie of Cooperstown and Mrs. Evelyn McRorie of Mesa, Ariz.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 1, 1999, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Jeff Hale, pastor of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, and the Rev. William A. Highfield, former pastor of the Cooperstown Methodist Church, co-officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Westville Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening, Wednesday, March 31, 1999, when Mrs. Saxton's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Doris E. Christiana
COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Doris E. Christiana, 84, of Fernleigh Drive in Cooperstown, died Sunday evening, March 28, 1999, at her home.

She was born on March 9, 1915, in Plattsburgh, a daughter of George and Edith (Walsh) Weir.

She first married Edward R. Rawls on June 18, 1943, in New York City. Mr. Rawls died on Feb. 12, 1963. She then married William G. Christiana on April 3, 1982, in Cooperstown. Mr. Christiana died on March 3, 1991.

Mrs. Christiana was raised in Plattsburgh, graduating from high school there in 1933. In 1937, she received a bachelor of literary interpretation degree from Emerson College. She later attended Columbia University, where she did her post graduate work. While living in New York City she worked as a copywriter. She later lived in Mount Vision and Morris. In the early 1960s she moved to Cooperstown and in 1967, she opened The Little Red Shop on Hoffman Lane with Mrs. John Logan.

She was a very active and devoted member of the Lake and Valley Garden Club and was also a member of the Leatherstocking Golf Club, Cooperstown Country Club, Friends of Bassett and the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown. An avid traveler, she had toured extensively throughout the world. In recent years she spent the winter months in Florida and St. Martins, as well as St. Simons Island.

Mrs. Christiana will be missed by her many friends and relatives.

Doris is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Marion B. and Charles Currier of Wellesley Hills, Mass.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 2, 1999, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Stephen J. Quinlan, co-pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Lakewood Cemetery.

At the request of the family there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to Friends of Bassett, 1 Atwell Rd., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326; or the Lake and Valley Garden Club Tribute Fund, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Bernard McClintock
EDMESTON — Bernard F. McClintock, 71, of Edmeston and formerly of Unadilla Forks, died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at St. Lukes Hospital in Utica.

He was born Aug. 20, 1927, in Earlville, the son of James and Bess (Tarbell) McClintock.

He married Mary E. Whitcomb at her family's home in Unadilla Forks on July 17, 1948.

Bernie was a lifetime employee of Bendix-Lucas Aerospace, where he was a participant in the components used in the space module. He also was an active member of the fire company in Unadilla Forks until retirement. Bernie loved the outdoors, and was very pleased that this past fall he was able once again to go hunting.

Bernard is survived by his wife, Mary; his son, Kenneth of Casey Creek, Ky.; two daughters, Joan Talbot of Edmeston and Barbara Green of Burlington Flats; three sisters; one sister-in-law; one son-in-law; one daughter-in-law; 10 grandchildren, Debra, James, Carrie, Jason, and Daniel McClintock, Jamie and Justin Backus and James, Jennifer, and Michael Talbot; and five great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one brother, four sisters, and his grandson, David Talbot.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 2, 1999, at 10 a.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. Charles Fitch officiating. Interment will follow at Unadilla Forks Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday, April 1, 1999, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the American Kidney Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Pauline V. Mumbulo
EDMESTON — Pauline V. Mumbulo of Edmeston died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at her home.

She was born Nov. 6, 1911, in Plainfield, the daughter of Erastus and Mattie (Tuller) Van Deusen.

She married Lewis Mumbulo in November of 1933. He predeceased her in 1982.

Pauline was a member of the Second Baptist Church, Edmeston. She was also very active with the Edmeston Free Library.

Pauline is survived by her daughter, Marie Bloom of Edmeston; her two grandchildren, Melissa and Mark Thieda of Vienna, Va., and Christopher Bloom of St. Louis, Mo.; her great-grandson, Alexander Thieda; two nieces and sons-in-law, Edward and Merle Leahy of Norwich, and Edward and Lois McNulty of Liverpool.

A memorial service to celebrate Pauline's life will be held on Friday, April 2, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the Second Baptist Church, Edmeston, with the Rev. John Buskey officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to either the Edmeston Emergency Squad or the Edmeston Free Library.

Arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Robert R. Rottman
ALBANY — Robert R. Rottman, 69, died Sunday, March 21, 1999.

Mr. Rottman was born in West New York, N.J., the son of the late Emil and Anna Leonhardt Rottman.

He had worked for Stoehr and Lawton Manufacturing, New Jersey.

He then lived in the Oneonta area, for almost 40 years, before moving to Eden Park Nursing Home in Albany, to be closer to his family.

He was the brother of Doris Shafer of Albany, Amabel Stoehr of Oneonta and Joyce Zink of Cranberry, N.J.; and uncle of George Stoehr of Oneonta and Darlene Curtis of Troy.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a graveside service at Stamford Cemetery, Stamford, on Thursday, April 1, 1999, at 1:30 p.m.

Arrangements are by McVeigh Funeral Home, Albany.

Florence Strong
WESTVILLE — Mrs. Florence Wood Strong, 91, of Westville, died Tuesday evening, March 30, 1999, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.

Florence was born June 26, 1907, in the town of Middlefield, a daughter of Arthur and Nina (Strong) Wood.

Florence married Milo Strong April 2, 1926, who predeceased her in 1976.

During World War II she worked at the Mica Plant in Oneonta and was an employee of New York Telephone for many years.

Florence was treasurer of the Administrative Board of the United Methodist Church of Westville, served as a church trustee as well as a lifelong member of the church. She was a member of the Westville Cemetery Association, a member of Westville Grange No. 540, Senior Citizen of Milford, AARP, and was a Telephone Pioneer.

Florence enjoyed crocheting, knitting mittens for her grandchildren for Christmas every year and knitting bandages for the Telephone Pioneers.

Florence is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Arthur Charles and Bernice Strong of county Highway No. 35 Maryland; two daughters, Edna Ruth Schaffer of Oneonta and Helen Mae Strong of county Highway No. 35 Maryland; nine grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn Schaffer of Oneonta; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a brother, Edwin Wood, and a sister, Elsie Whitney.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, April 3, 1999, at the United Methodist Church in Westville at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Nancy Kozlowski, pastor, officiating.

Calling hours will be from noon to 1 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of Westville on Saturday, April 3, 1999, when the family will be in attendance. Burial will be later in the spring at Westville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations in Florence's name may be made to the United Methodist Church of Westville, care of the Rev. Nancy Kozlowski, North Main Street, Milford, N.Y. 13807.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
