TAYLOR

OAK ISLAND - Mr. James Ray Taylor, better known as "Sheriff Jim Taylor," 63, of 5817 E. Oak Island Drive, husband of Faye Lee Taylor, passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at the New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington. Mr. Taylor was born in Forsyth County Aug. 9, 1937, to the late Arthur and Frances Hiatt Taylor. He was a former sheriff of Surry County, having been elected to office in 1966 and reelected to office in 1970. In 1966, when he was elected sheriff, he was the youngest sheriff to be elected to office at that time in North Carolina. Also, when elected in 1966, he was the first Republican to be elected to any Surry County Public Office since Reconstruction after the Civil War. He was known for the Christmas parties for needy children every year. After leaving public office in 1974, he operated the Jean Ranch and Me'n Levi Stores in Mount Airy. He grew up in the Elkin area and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Elkin. Mr. Taylor was a member of various civic organizations. In 1982, he moved to Oak Island where he was owner and operator of Burlington Outlet. Survivors include his wife, Faye Lee Taylor of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Diana T. and Ken Gwyn of Mount Airy; a son, Stewart Taylor of Elkin; a daughter-in-law, Belinda Tyler of Jonesville; a special friend, Gary R. Golding of Mount Airy; three grandchildren, Amy Taylor of Jonesville, and Taylor Gwyn and Jordan Gwyn, both of Mount Airy; a brother, William Hiatt Taylor of Elkin; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 22, 2001, at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy conducted by Mr. David Beal and Mr. Joe Bill Miles. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made the Sheriff's Special Christmas Fund, c/o Sheriff Connie Watson, Surry County Sheriff's Department, P.O. Box 827, Dobson, NC 27017.

TAYLOR

STATE ROAD - Mrs. Vida "Babbs" Taylor, 84, of Clover Lane passed away Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at the Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Cen-ter. Mrs. Taylor was born March 3, 1917, in Jonestown, Pa. to James Lawrence and Grace Stall Babb. Mrs. Taylor was a member of Elkin First Baptist Church and Cedarbrook Golf Course and was also in the Garden Club. In addition to her parents, she was pre-ceded in death by her brother, Lawrence E. Babb. Survivors include her husband, Dr. Vernon W. Taylor Jr. of the home; a son, Jim Taylor of Dobson; two daughters, Susan Taylor of State Road and Bobbi Vestal of Jonesville; and three grand-children, Paul Gaither, Cory Taylor and Kelsey Taylor. A graveside service will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Crestwood Memorial Gardens by Dr. Bill Johnson and the Rev. Joe Dell Rust. A memorial service will follow at the First Baptist Church of Elkin at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 Friday evening at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. The family requests no flowers. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Elkin.

VALETOS

Mr. Arthur "Sonny" Manuel Valetos, 72, of Winston-Salem died unexpectedly Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at his home. He was born July 13, 1929, in Forsyth County to Manuel Arthur and Hilda Maude Viditto Valetos. He served in the U.S. Armed Forces and was associated in the restaurant business with his father. He was preceded in death by his father and mother; and a sister, Kathleen Hoffman of Memphis, Tenn. He is survived by three sisters and brothers-in-law, the Rev. John and Lois Calhoun of Clemmons, Dr. Duke and Carolyn Weeks of Winston-Salem, and Ben and Peggy Holder of Winston-Salem; and 10 nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, July 20, at Forsyth Memorial Park by the Rev. John C. Calhoun. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. WHEELER

Mr. William Rudolph Wheeler, 76, of Winston-Salem, died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born June 6, 1925, in Boston, Mass., to the late William R. Wheeler Sr. and Bertha Renew Wheeler. Mr. Wheeler served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was retired from Hewlett Packard. He was of the Catholic faith. Mr. Wheeler was preceded in death by his first wife, Phyllis Kremer Wheeler. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Jackson Wheeler of the home; two sons, Paul G. Wheeler and wife Patricia of Norwood, Mass., and William F. Wheeler of North Chelmsford, Mass.; two brothers, Albert Wheeler and wife Marilyn of Albemarle, and Richard Wheeler and wife Anna of Boston, Mass.; six stepchildren, Gloria J. Moore, Cheryl M. Williamson, Gary W. Moore and wife Florence, Connie M. Jones, Cathy M. Parker and husband David, and Glenn C. Moore and wife Lydia; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by Mr. Bill Teague. The family will receive friends after the service. Memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

WILLIAMS

Mrs. Phyllis Brandon Williams, 62, of 4475 Kinnamon Road, died Tuesday, July 17, 2001. She was born Dec. 17, 1938, in Yadkinville to Bob and Helen Brown Brandon. Surviving are a daughter, Deborah Poteat Campbell and husband Jack of Lexington; a son, Ralph Samuel Poteat Jr.; adopted son Zane Grey Williams; granddaughter Carmella Michael; and stepgrandson Roman Shay Campbell. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 20, 2001, at Flat Rock Baptist Church cemetery in Yadkinville. The Rev. Bill Chatman will officiate.The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to the cemetery fund at Flat Rock Baptist Church.

WORRELL

Mrs. Norma Huie Wiles Worrell, 88, died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Springwood Care. She was born in Wilkes County on March 9, 1913, to the late Robert Emery Huie and Mamie Morgan Huie. She was a faithful member of Pleasant View Baptist Church. Mrs. Worrell lived most of her life in Forsyth County and retired from Hanes Knitware. Surviving are two sons, Steve Wiles and wife Lori of Kernersville, and Larry Wiles and wife Donna of Winston-Salem; and a daughter, Delores Humphrey and husband Wilbert of Clemmons; eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Monroe Huie and wife Ruth, Fred Huie and wife Sara, and the Rev. J.M. Huie, all of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Ora Harrell of Wilkes County, Rosalee Barnette and husband Sanford, and Evelyn Hatcher and husband Ed of Winston-Salem. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Pleasant View Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. B. A. Carroll. Interment will be in Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel, Friday 7-9 p.m.

JONESVILLE - Master William Henry Ball, 2, son of Deana Ashley Ball, died July 27 at Hugh Chatham Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete at this time. Mackie-Reavis Funeral Home of Yadkinville is serving the family.

CONRAD

LEWISVILLE - "A beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend has taken flight to be with our Lord." The Rev. James Edward Conrad Sr., 82, of 8622 Concord Church Road, passed away on Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons in Clemmons, following a period of illness. He was born on Feb. 10, 1919, in Lewisville, to the late Orange and Nellie Anthony Conrad. The Rev. Conrad was a retired minister of the Western North Carolina AME Zion Conference where he pastored the following churches, Steward's Chapel AME Zion Church, Chapel Hill AME Zion Church, Benbow Chapel AME Zion Church, Artis Chapel AME Zion Church, Bethany AME Zion Church, Smith Grove AME Zion Church and Mainville AME Zion Church. He is survived by his children, local preacher Dorothy (Robert Sr.) Kelley, James E. Conrad Jr., the Rev. William (Emma) Conrad and Bobby L. Conrad; 12 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sisters Frances Flow, Virginia Alford and Lillian Howell; brothers John (Doretha) Conrad and Walter (Dorothy) Conrad; two sisters-in-law, Ola Conrad and Nancy Conrad; a brother-in-law, Howard Hawkins (Thomasina), a devoted friend, Corrie Young; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 30, 2001, at the New Hope AME Zion Church with the Rev. Alvin Damon officiating and the Rev. William Conrad as eulogist. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the church. (Russell)

CROMER

Miss Maryetta Agnes Cromer, 100, formerly of Carrie Avenue, went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 27, 2001, at Village Care of King. One of 17 Cromer children, she was born Aug. 7, 1900, in Stokes County to Wilburn Franklin and Phoebe Frances Kiser Cromer. She lived and worked in Stokes County for 31 years and was a faithful member of Mount Olive Baptist Church while in that community. She then lived in Winston-Salem for over 35 years and was a faithful member of Crestwood Baptist Church. She enjoyed farming, cooking and entertaining. Miss Cromer is survived by four sisters, Georgia Young of Waterburg, Conn., Katherine Bovender of Winston-Salem, Elsie Caudle of Rural Hall, and Evelyn Fulp of Walkertown; a brother, Floyd "Pete" Cromer of Winston-Salem; and a large number of nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. A funeral to celebrate her life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Crestwood Baptist Church with the Revs. David Wood and J. Marion Rector officiating. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park. GRIST

Ann Traylor Grist, 78, passed away Saturday, July 28, 2001, at her daughter's home in Winston-Salem. She was born Oct. 27, 1922, to the late Charles Mumford and Kathlyn Jackson Kopp. She was a 1943 graduate of Women's College in Greensboro. Upon graduation, she taught school briefly in Portsmouth, Va., where she met and married her husband, Kermit Traylor, on July 22, 1944. Dr. Traylor preceded her in death Feb. 4, 1974. Mrs. Grist was a longtime member of First Christian Church, where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and held various offices. She was a member of the Child Study Club and worked for the Board of Elections in her precinct. In 1975, she moved to Washington, N.C., where she married Samuel Latham Grist Jr. in 1977. He also preceded her in death July 16, 1992. She was an active member of First Christian Church, where she was an elder and an active member of the Co-Workers' Sunday School Class. While living in Washington, N.C., she was a member of the Stratford Book Club, a volunteer with the Pamlico-Tar River Foundation, and a member of the PEO Sorority. Mrs. Grist is survived by two children, Dan Traylor and his wife Patsy, and Kathy Sink and her husband Mike; two stepchildren, Sam Grist III and his wife Lucy, and Randy Lassiter and husband Bernie; three granddaughters, Debbie Traylor, Rebecca Sink, and Emily Wilson; and five stepgrandchildren, Michelle Redinger, Elizabeth Martin, Hugh David Grist, Lydia Beth Grist, and Samuel Grist. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at First Christian Church in Winston-Salem with the Rev. James P. Cobb officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. Interment will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Oakdale cemetery in Washington, N.C. The family requests memorials be made to First Christian Church, 2320 West Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.

HAIRSTON

Mr. Levar Antwain Hairston, 23, of 2365 Riley Forest Drive passed away Thursday, July 26, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was a native of Winston-Salem, born March 15, 1978, to Stephen and Iona Bristow Hairston. Levar was a graduate of Robert Glenn High School, Class of 1996, where he was a member of the National Honor Society. Levar was a Crosby Scholar, a member of Who's Who of National High School Students, and was a senior at Wake Forest University. He was a member of the New Trinity Baptist Church, where he served on the Usher Board and the Youth Choir. Levar is survived by his loving parents, Stephen and Iona Bristow Hairston of the home; his sister, Stephanie Hairston, and his brother, Stephen Hairston, both of the home; his maternal grandmother, Margaret Bristow; his paternal grandmother, Virginia Hairston; and many devoted uncles, aunts, cousins, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 30, at Mount Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Samuels officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Monday at Mount Zion Baptist Church. (RUSSELL)

KARAGIORGIS

Our beloved husband, father, and grandfather Stavros Evangelos Karagiorgis departed this life on July 27, 2001. Stavros was a longtime resident of Winston-Salem and member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Winston-Salem. In addition, he was a member of the Evrytanian Association of American and the Velouchi Association. He was born on Sept. 8, 1925, in the village of Viniani, Evrytania, Greece, to Evangelos and Vasiliki Serpanos Karagiorgis. He immigrated to the United States on Jan. 20, 1967, with his wife and three sons to Winston-Salem. He was employed in the restaurant business in Winston-Salem until his retirement. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Demetrios Karagiorgis. He is survived by his loving wife, Eleftheria "Libby" Karanikas Karagiorgis; three sons and daughters-in-law, Angelo and Fotoni Karagiorgis, Nick and Anastasia Karagiorgis, and Greg and Helen Karagiorgis; four grandchildren, Eleftheria Angelo, Stavros Angelo, Stavros Nick and Vasiliki Nick Karagiorgis, all of Winston-Salem; a sister, Margarita Karagiorgis Rodis of Lamia, Greece; a brother-in-law, Loukas Rodis; a sister-in-law, Mercina Karagiorgis of Washington, D.C.; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church, with a Trisagion Service at 7:30 p.m. in the Greek Orthodox Church. A 2 p.m. funeral service will be held on Monday, July 30, in the Greek Orthodox Church led by Fathers Demetri Kangelaris, George Kiricoples and Dennis Canavos. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Research for Progressive Supra Nuclear Palsy SPSP Inc., Woodholme Building, Suite 515, 1838 Greene Tree Road, Baltimore, MD 21208; or to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

LEMONS

CLEMMONS - Mrs. Dorothy Baker Lemons, 76, passed away Friday, July 27, 2001. She was born to George T. and Viola Feldmeyer Baker on Dec. 14, 1924, in Erie County, N.Y. She married Paul E. Lemons on April 22, 1943, in Buffalo, N.Y. He preceded her in death Sept. 30, 1978. Mrs. Lemons was a longtime member of Woodland Baptist Church and a member of its Faithful Followers Sunday school class for more than 32 years. She was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. She is survived by six children, Paul M. Lemons and his wife Barbara, Kathryn Lemons, Diane Tucker and her husband Harold, Michele Pennell and her husband Gary, Jo Ann Mendenhall and her husband J.B., and Beverly Riddle and her husband David; 12 grandchildren, Theresa Brown, Deirdre Stevens, Mark Tucker, Danielle Peddycord, Shelly Redmond, Donald Brown, Derek Lemons, Jimmy Mendenhall, Melissa Earnhardt, Amanda Abbott, Jeremy Mendenhall and Jason Redmond; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Milton Baker. Her children will rise up and call her blessed. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, July 30, 2001, at Woodland Baptist Church. Mrs. Lemons will lie in state at the church an hour prior to the service. The Rev. R. Zeno Groce and the Rev. Tim Gammons will officiate. Interment will follow at Waughtown cemetery. McMICHAEL

MADISON - Dalton Larkin McMichael Sr., 87, of 505 W. Murphy Street died Friday, July 27, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 30, at Madison Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Don Mimbs and the Rev. Dr. Jean Rodenbough officiating. Interment will follow in Woodland cemetery. Mr. McMichael was born March 10, 1914, in Wentworth, and was the youngest of seven boys. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1938. He was involved in the textile industry throughout his career including founding Madison Throwing Co., MacField Inc., Vintage Yarns, and Mayo Yarns. He was a member of Madison Presbyterian Church. He served as chairman of the Madison School Board of Education and then the consolidated Madison-Mayodan School Board of Education for 15 1/2 years. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Ragsdale McMichael, to whom he was married for 53 years and with whom he had four children who survive him: Gail M. Drew and husband Richard of Durham; Flavel M. Godfrey and husband John of Jacksonville, Fla.; Dalton L. McMichael Jr. and wife Susan of Stoneville; and Louise M. Miracle of Stoneville. He also is survived by six grandchildren and a great-grandchild; his second wife, Hanne Andersen McMichael and her children, Jens Andersen, Henrik Andersen, Eva Anderson, and Peter Andersen; and six grandchildren, all of Copenhagen, Denmark. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, July 29, at Ray Funeral Home in Madison. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dalton L. McMichael Fund, Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Medical Center Blvd., Winston-Salem, NC 27157; or to the Dalton L. McMichael Fund, Madison-Mayodan Recreation Department, P.O. MILLER

Mrs. Luther Mae Miller of 2017 Lincoln Ave., the wife of the late Robert Miller, passed away Friday, July 27, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was a native of Lillington, where she was a 1934 graduate of Shawtown High School. Mrs. Miller received her nursing training in South Carolina and her cosmetology training in Winston-Salem. She was the first black woman to own her own business in downtown Winston-Salem. Mrs. Miller was a member of New Birth Worship Center in East Bend. She also was a member of the Kimberly Park Senior Citizens. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Camille Miller-Allen, and Mrs. Sandra Miller Jones (Lafayette), both of this city; three grandchildren, William Phillips Jr. (Tammy), Jon Derrick Miller (Charlene), and Bridgette Miller Jones, all of this city; five great-grandchildren; several cousins, among them a devoted cousin, William Murchison of this city; and a devoted family friend, William Phillips Sr. of this city. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, at New Birth Worship Center, Reynolda Road Extension/Highway 67 in East Bend. Pastor James L.E. Hunt will officiate and interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the services, from 12:30 to 1 p.m., at the Worship Center. The remains may be viewed from 2:30 to 7 p.m. Monday at Clark S. Brown and Sons Funeral Home. The family may be contacted at the residence. RAGAN-MILLER

SANTA CRUZ Calif. - Regina Ragan-Miller, 50, died June 19, 2001, at her home in Santa Cruz, Calif., after a period of declining health. She was born in Franklin to Claude "Jack" Ragan and Kathryn Younce Ragan on Aug. 7, 1950. Regina graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School, and attended the College of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City, and the University of California at Santa Cruz. "Aunt Gina" was a free spirit whose broad interests led her to a variety of professions. She worked as a flight attendant for Piedmont Airlines and as a booking agent for Goose Creek Symphony and Alice Cooper. Later she spent many years teaching drama to middle- and high-school students at the Bear Theatre in Santa Cruz, Calif. She was a juvenile parole officer for Santa Cruz County, and a volunteer coordinator for Santa Cruz Cannabis Pharmaceuticals. Before her death she was a group facilitator for the American Chronic Pain Association, Santa Cruz Chapter. Her energy and compassion were limitless for those who were in constant pain, as she was. She was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church in Santa Cruz, Calif. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, and her sister, Claudia Ragan Cameron. Surviving are her sister Angela Ragan Long and brother-in-law Richard P. Long of Winston-Salem; two nephews whom she loved dearly, Benjamin Ragan Long of Winston-Salem, and John Ragan Taylor of Virginia Beach, Va.; her husband and friend, Clark Henry Miller of Santa Cruz, Calif.; and very dear friends, Robert Klein and Chris Van DeVere, both of Santa Cruz, Calif. Services were held on the shore of the Pacific Ocean at Davenport, Calif., on July 8, 2001. Memorials can be made to the American Chronic Pain Association, P.O. Box 850, Rocklin, CA 95677.
