Alfred ‘Bud’ Koelke
Alfred “Bud” Koelke, 75, of Clarkfield, died Dec. 31, 2003 at the Chippewa County Montevideo Hospital. Funeral services were held Jan. 5, 2004 at Clarkfield Alliance Church, Clarkfield with Pastor Carter MacFarlane officiating. Organist was KayAnn Riecke and soloist was Ross Riecke. Casketbearers were Clark Field, Jim Heisner, Marcus Schwartz, Dennis Snyder, Tony Stangeland, James TeGantvoort. Burial was in the Clarkfield City Cemetery.
Alfred “Bud” Arnold Koelke was born April 27, 1928 at Canby to parents John and Lena (Flour) Koelke.
Bud married Audrey TeGantvoort on Feb. 19, 1950. Bud had a variety of jobs from farming to truck driving. He worked the greater part of his life at A.M.P.I. in Dawson.
He is survived by his wife, Audrey, Clarkfield; daughters: Connie (and Bob) Nelson, Clarkfield, Marlene (and Bob) Turnbull, Appleton, and Darla, Montevideo; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Omer E. Pederson
Omer Pederson, 83, of Granite Falls, died Jan. 1, 2004, at the VA Hospital in Minneapolis. His funeral was held on Jan. 5, 2004 at the Granite Falls Lutheran Church with Pastor Bob Knutson and Pastor Bruce Kuenzel officiating. Organist was Rita Knutson and soloist, Gary Frederickson.
Pallbearers were Chuck Neibuhr, Vince Schenck, Larry Lestrud, Gaylord Miller, Darrold Miller and Dave Braemer. Military honors were presented by the VFW and the Granite Falls American Legion. Burial was in the Granite Falls City Cemetery.
Omer Eli Pederson was born Jan. 13, 1920, to Ole and Christine (Olson) Pederson in Ellsborough Township, Balaton. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
Omer served his country during World War II in the United States Army and was honorably discharged on Oct. 23, 1945.
He married ElDora Nelson on March 22, 1945 in Balaton. Together they farmed in the Eagle Bend area.
Omer was a member of the Granite Falls Lutheran Church and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans and was active with the VFW Honor Guard.
He is survived by his wife ElDora of Granite Falls, one sister Josie Schenck of Albert Lea and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and three brothers.

Laverne Ellyson
Laverne (Lundin) Ellyson, 94, of Ponca, NE, formerly of Newcastle, died Dec. 21, 2003 at the Elms Health Care Center in Ponca, NE. Her funeral was held Dec. 26 at the United Church of Christ in Newcastle, NE with Pastor Gary Kimm officiating.
Casketbearers were Monty Miller, Bruce Salk, Vet Beyeler, Scott Miller, Keith Addison and Bob Juhlin. Interment was in Hillcrest Cemetery of Granite Falls, MN.
Aurora Geneva Laverne Ellyson was born on Nov. 16, 1909 in Omaha, NE to Karl and Llydia Karlsson of Essex, IA Her mother died when Laverne was 18 months old and she was adopted by Andrew and Anna Lundin of Wayne, NE when she was 21 months old.
In 1913, she moved with her parents to Granite Falls where she was confirmed in 1924 and graduated from Granite Falls High School in 1928. She married George Ellyson on Aug. 6, 1944. The couple moved to South Sioux City, NE and then to Homer, NE in 1945. They resided there until 1973 when they retired and moved to Newcastle. George died in 1984. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Newcastle.
She is survived by two step-sons, step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Laverne was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one biological sister, one step-sister, three step-brothers and two step-sons.
Arrangements were by Mohr Funeral Home of Ponca, NE.
Vergil Hegna
Vergil Hegna, 76, of Montevideo, died Jan. 3, 2004, at his home. His funeral was held on Jan. 7 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Monte-video with Rev. Bill Odermann officiating. Organist was Annette Thompson and soloist, Randy Fjerkenstad.
Casketbearers were Don Swenson; Scott and Kyle Hegna; David and Ronnie Fjerkenstad; Tim Lindquist; David Johnson, and Steve Steen. Honorary casketbearers were Bergen, Ben and Elizabeth Graff; Nathan, Chad, Sarah, Susanna and Corey Hegna; Marcie Bork and Michelle Moller. Interment was in Terrace Lawn Gardens.
Vergil Leroy Hegna was born on Oct. 24, 1927 in Hazel Run to Melvin and Theoline (Thompson) Hegna. He was baptized and confirmed at Hazel Run Lutheran and graduated from Clarkfield High School in 1946. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was awarded the Purple Heart. On June 25, 1950 he married Arlene Fjerkenstad. They lived in Boyd, Clarkfield, Montgomery and Donnelly and Sioux Falls, SD for 12 years before he retired and moved to Montevideo in 1986. He worked for GTA Feeds as a branch manager for 28 years. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran, Clarkfield American Legion Post, VFW Post #380 in Montevideo and the DAV.
He is survived by his wife Arlene; children: Susan Lucht and husband Roger of Glencoe; Duane Hegna and wife Jackie of Stafford, VI; Michael Hegna and wife Mary of Clarkfield and Debra Graff and husband Neil of Sioux Falls, SD; seven grandchildren; five brothers: Marvin (Mavis) Hegna of Clarkfield; Wayne (Carolyn) Hegna of Sun City, AZ; David (Delores) Hegna of Hesperia, CA; Larry Hegna of Brainerd, and Mal (Pat) Hegna of Hesperia, CA; six sisters: Marilyn Johnson of Berlin, WI; Maysel (Earl) Tweet of Conrad, MT; Janice (Alton) Lindquist of Madison; Pat (Wayne) Myhre of Montevideo; Kathleen (Bruce) Marsh of Glencoe, and Kathryn (Stan) Haats of Maynard; one sister-in-law, Dorrie Hegna of Granite Falls and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Jon Hegna; and three brothers: Douglas, Wesley and Dennis Hegna.

Irene Knutson
Irene Knutson, 87, of Belview, died Jan. 5, 2004 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8, at Rock Dell Lutheran Church in Swedes Forest Township north of Belview. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Redwood Valley Funeral Home in Redwood Falls and one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Irene J. Knutson was born on Dec. 22, 1916 on the family farm in Kintire Township to Fred and Emma (Danielson) Weidmann. She was baptized and confirmed at Rock Dell Lutheran. She attended country school. Irene married Henry Knutson on June 15, 1938. They lived on the Knutson family farm in Swedes Forest Township until Sept 12, 1996 when Henry died. Irene then moved into the nursing home where she has resided since. She was a lifetime member of Rock Dell Lutheran where she was active in the ladies aid. She also belonged to the Sons of Norway and was active in the Sacred Heart Senior Citizens.
She had made two trips to Norway and wintered in Texas for several years.
She is survived by her six children and their spouses: Eunice and Oliver Moldestad of Belview, Hillman and Myrtle Knutson of St. Louis Park, Hilding and Linda Knutson of Redwood Falls, Wendell and Bonnie Knutson of Chaska, Iylene and Merlin Kletscher of New London, and Milo and Sharon Knutson of Belview; 22 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren; sister Florence Iverson of Belview; two sisters-in-law: Ella Skogen and Gladys Christianson, both of Belview.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Henry and a brother Alois Weidmann.
Aloysius Schubert
Aloysius Schubert, 83, of Madison, died Jan. 1, 2004 at the Madison Lutheran Home. His funeral was held on Jan. 5 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church of Madison with Fr. Jeff Horejsi officiating. Organist was Katie Enger and special music by St. Michael’s choir.
Honorary casket bearers were Lew Shaver, Jim Harkins, Wayne Rogge, Gerald Fieber, Tony Majeres, George Loutsch and the Madison and Gary American Legion Clubs. Active casket bearers were Zachary Schubert, Jentry Jibben, Calvin Jibben, Alex Schubert, Heidi Harkins, Joie Schubert and Stephanie Schubert. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Aloysius Joseph Schubert was born June 4, 1920 in Worthington to Edward and Margaret Riley) Schubert. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. He graduated from Brewster High School in 1939. He served in the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Navy, serving his country during World War II in the North Atlantic on a U.S. destroyer and he was honorably discharged on Feb. 10, 1946.
He married Margaret Lutz on Jan. 14, 1943. Al and Margaret raised their family and farmed in the Clarkfield area and Freeland Township for over 45 years. They retired to Madison in 1989. He served St. Michael’s Catholic Church teaching CCD and as a lector for over 20 years.
Al is survived by his wife Margaret of Madison; children, David and wife Robbie Schubert of Ames, IA; Judith and husband Lew Shaver, Mary and husband Jim Harkins, Mark and wife Bernie Schubert, all of Canby, and Daniel and wife Anna Schubert of Marshall, 15 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two sisters; Marion and husband, Wayne Rogge of Montevideo, and Margaret and husband Frank Pritchard of California.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and two sons, Michael and Patrick Schubert.

Thelma Brovold
Thelma Brovold, 89, died Dec. 29, 2003 at Bethany Home in Litchfield. Funeral services were held Jan. 2, 2004 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Boyd, with Pastor Ryan Fischer officiating. Organist was Sandy Jurgenson. Casketbearers were Travis, Trevor and Troy Brovold; Kelly Ebnet, Kerri Herker and Thomas Tanhoff. Burial was in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Boyd.
Thelma Gwendolyn Brovold was born on Aug. 19, 1914 in Sanborn, Iowa to Thomas and Florence (Kimble) Dagel. She was married to Benford Brovold on June 28, 1939 and moved to Boyd in 1945 where she lived until December of 2000 when she moved to Bethany Home, an assisted living facility in Litchfield.
Thelma was active in the community of Boyd serving as city clerk and assessor for a number of years. She served as PTA president and organized the original “Mother Singers.” At Trinity Lutheran she was church treasurer, president of the Ladies Aid and member of the church choir.
Thelma is survived by her daughter Crystal (and Ron) Ebnet of Litchfield; son Jan (and Sandra) of St. Peter; two granddaughters; three grandsons; five great grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Doris Brovold, Granite Falls, Eileen Pyle, Clarkfield, Mamie Amundson, Minneapolis; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben; her parents; and three sisters: Evelyn, Opal and Ruth.

(Thora) Johanna Brusven
(Thora) Johanna Brusven, 99, died Dec. 29, 2003 at the Madison Lutheran Home. Funeral services were held Jan. 2, 2004 at St. Lucas Lutheran Church, rural Cottonwood with Pastor Rob Kemppainen officiating. Organist was Connie Pehrson with vocal music by Mitch and Roberta Brusven. Casketbearers were Karl, Mitchell, Scott, Steve and Tom Brusven; and Loyal Weaver. Burial was in the church cemetery.
(Thora) Johanna Hanson Brusven was born July 19, 1904 at Starbuck to Iver and Eline (Johannson) Hanson. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith. In 1905 she and her parents moved to Fort Pelly, Sask. where they were until 1912 when they moved to Skime, MN. Johanna went to school at Skime for five years. In 1917 they moved to Preeceville, Sask. and in 1925 to Archerwill, Sask. She married Arnold Brusven, a farmer from Minnesota, on Sept. 2, 1921. Arnold and Johanna moved to Cottonwood to farm and raise their family.
Arnold died in 1977 but Johanna continued to live on the farm for 73 years until her health forced her to move to Brookside Manor in Monte-video in 1995 and to the Madison Lutheran Home in 1996. She was a member of St. Lucas Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid.
Johanna is survived by by her children: Anton (and Dorothy) of Clarkfield, Milo (and Velda) of Cottonwood, Ernest (and Marilyn) of Cottonwood, Sam (and Kathleen) of Browerville, and June Weaver of Canby; 24 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Mabel of Vernon, BC.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; several brothers and sisters.
