Irene G. Brisbois

FOSSTON, Minn. -- Irene G. Brisbois, 96, Fosston, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, in Midway Care Center, Fosston.

Irene G. Chilton was born March 17, 1902, the daughter of Rache and Sarah (Martin) Chilton, in Mahnomen, Minn., where she attended school. She graduated from Flandreau (S.D.) Indian School. She attended Moorhead State University and Bemidji State University, receiving her two-year teaching certificate. She taught rural schools in Mahnomen County, including Becker, Antell, Uran, Pine Bend and LaDuke, Minn. She married Leo Solomon Brisbois on June 2, 1926, in Mahnomen. She taught schools in East Grand Forks and Vineland at Mille Lacs Lake, Minn. Leo Solomon Brisbois died in 1967. She retired and in 1971, she returned to Fosston. She taught in the Indian Educational Department until retiring in 1981. She lived in Lengby, Minn., until 1994 when she moved to Midway Care Center.

She is survived by a son Gabriel "Brother B" (Mary Ann), Lengby; a daughter, June Fleskes, Hercules, Calif.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Evelyn Blaeser, Fernley, Nev.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Georgianna "Bunny" Gattenby; six brothers; and three sisters.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday in St. Anne's Catholic Church, Naytahwaush, Minn.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service in Mattson Funeral Home, Mahnomen.

Burial: St. Agnes Catholic Cemetery, Island Lake, Minn.

Betty Shimota

GARY, Minn. -- Betty Shimota, 61, Alexandria, Minn., formerly of Gary, Minn., died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, in Sioux Valley Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D.

Betty Shimota was born July 1, 1937, the daughter of Albin and Louise (Rumreich) Shimota, in Duluth. She graduated from high school in Gary in 1955. She attended Interstate Business College, Fargo. She moved to Minneapolis, where she worked for the Radisson Hotel chain. She moved to Osakis, Minn., where she worked as a comptroller for Arrowood Resort, until retiring in the mid 1990s. She moved to Alexandria in the early 1990s.

She is survived by sisters, Kathryn Ferry, Green Valley, Ariz., and Mary Lou Simon, Tucson, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Services: Will be held at a later date.

Burial: St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery, Mahnomen, Minn. (Mattson, Mahnomen).

Dale A. Hanson

BADGER, Minn. -- Dale A. Hanson, 65, Badger, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at home.

Dale Arthur Hanson was born March 28, 1933, the son of Henry and Ivadelle (Dann) Hanson, in Badger, where he attended school, graduating in 1951. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955, during the Korean War. He married Carol Blazek on April 2, 1956, in Minneapolis. They lived in Minneapolis, where he worked as a truck driver for Coca-Cola. They moved to Badger in 1970. He worked as a truck driver for various people until retiring in 1995.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Tim (Marlene), Badger; daughters, Pam (Allan) Monsrud, Badger, and Nicole Hanson; six grandchildren; a brother, Duane (Michelle), Brookings, S.D.; and sisters, Barbara (Dean) Lundby, Badger, and Janet (Robert) Hagen, White Bear Lake, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Roger.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday in Our Redeemers Lutheran Church, Badger.

Visitation: Noon to 7 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Badger City Cemetery.

Military Rites: Badger VFW. (Helgeson, Roseau, Minn.).

Angela 'Angie' Stengl

ANGUS, Minn. -- Angela "Angie" Stengl, 77, Angus, Minn., died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at home.

Angela Marek was born Oct. 2, 1921, the daughter of Frank and Albina (Sherry) Marek in Tabor, Minn., where she attended school. She worked for Armour Meat Processing in Grand Forks. She married Stanley Stengl on Oct. 29, 1946, in Tabor. They farmed for several years. She worked at the East Grand Forks Eagles.

She is survived by her husband; daughters, Shirley (Douglas) Minnick, Lester Prairie, Minn., and Carolyn (Don) Matz, Warren, Minn.; sons, Richard (Nancy), Sherack, Minn., and James (Roberta), East Grand Forks; six grandchildren; and a brother, Raymond (Sylvia), Angus.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Lawrence and Melvin.

Services: 10: 30 Tuesday, Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Tabor.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Stennes Funeral Home, East Grand Forks, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery, Tabor.

Shawntae Rose Roy

NAYTAHWAUSH, Minn. -- Shawntae Rose Roy, infant daughter of Becky Roy, Naytahwaush, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, in Dakota Heartland Hospital, Fargo.

Shawntae Rose Roy was born Jan. 14, 1999, in St. Mary's Hospital, Detroit Lakes, Minn. She was transported to Dakota Heartland Hospital shortly after her birth.

She is survived by her mother; her grandparents, David and Beth Burnette, Naytahwaush; great-grandparents, Thelma and Ronald Coleman, and Ed and Ada Burnette, all of Naytahwaush, and Ardyce McCradie, Grandin, N.D.; and great-great-grandparents, Malcolm and Opal Londo, Hendrum, Minn.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, St. Anne's Catholic Church, Naytahwaush.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in the church.

Burial: St. Anne's Catholic Cemetery, Naytahwaush (Mattson, Mahnomen, Minn.)

John Negaard

PINEWOOD, Minn. -- John Negaard, 88, Pinewood, Minn., died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999, in North Country Regional Hospital, Bemidji.

John Negaard was born April 4, 1910, the son of Oalf and Olga (Roen) Negaard, in Pinewood, where he attended school. He married Emma Traaseth on April 18, 1938, in Pinewood. He farmed and logged in Pinewood. He also worked for Beltrami County maintaining snow fencing. Emma Negaard died June 28, 1978.

He is survived by a daughter, Opal (Dennis) Maravec, Bemidji; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sisters, Doris (Eddie) Olson and Charlotte (Vernon) Forde, both of Bemidji, and Bernice (Goodwin) Traaseth, Bagley, Minn.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Janette; a brother, Oscar; and sisters, Ellen Babich, Margaret Cimmpermann, Irene Treider, Avis Blashill and Norma Nelson.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Buzzle-Osterdalen Lutheran Church, Buzzle Township, Beltrami County, Minn.

Burial: Church Cemetery (Olson-Schwartz, Bemidji).

Signe Friberg

ROSEAU, Minn. -- Signe Friberg, 95, Roseau, died Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, in Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis.

Signe Lundberg was born April 12, 1903, the daughter of John and Anna (Lund) Lundberg, in Milaca, Minn., where she attended school. She married Eric Friberg on April 20, 1933, in Milaca. They moved to Roseau County, Minn., and farmed in Falun Township until 1962, when they moved to Minneapolis.

She is survived by a son, Emery, Minneapolis; a daughter, Edna (Clifford) Johnson, Hacienda Heights, Calif.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Linnea (William) Astbury, of Maine.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Bethel Covenant Church, Roseau.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Falun Cemetery (Helgeson, Roseau).

Olaf H. Solvik

WARREN, Minn. -- Olaf H. Solvik, 57, formerly of Warren, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, at home.

Olaf H. Solvik was born Sept. 3, 1941, the son of Edie and Alice (Wimpfheimer) Solvik, in Warren, where he attended school. He served in the U.S. Marines from 1959 to 1963. He married Carol (Karstens) Worthley on Dec. 17, 1982, in Fairmont, Minn. They lived in Fairmont until moving to Olathe, Kan., where he worked as an elevator manager. He later became regional manager for the cattle division of Louis-Dreyfus Corp. They lived in Omaha, Denver, and Sioux City and Denison, Iowa. In the fall of 1994, they moved to Spencer, Iowa, where he worked for the U.S. Postal Service.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Gary (Becky) Worthley, Westminster, Colo.; a daughter, Shari Worthley, Spencer; a stepfather, Bardof Pederson, Thief River Falls; brothers, Edward (Gwen), Thief River Falls, and Lawrence (Sandra), Warren; and sisters, Ruth (Roger) Helm, Portland, Ore., Muriel (Otto Jr.) Kaml, Badger, Minn., June (Leslie) Seward, Park Rapids, Minn., Sandra (Thomas) Schmidt, Shakopee, Minn., and Donna (Michael) Gallagher, Warren.

He was preceded in death by a grandson; and a stepson, Beau.

Services: 11 a.m. today, Milford (Iowa) Baptist Church.

Burial: Cedar Hills Cemetery, Trimont, Minn. (Turner, Milford).

Francis 'Frank' Hedger

GUTHRIE, Minn. -- Francis "Frank" Hedger, 79, Guthrie, died Monday, Feb. 9, 1999, in North Country Regional Hospital, Bemidji.

Francis Sherman Hedger was born Aug. 23, 1919, the son of Wingate and Mary (Stuart) Hedger, in Montgomery County, Ky. He married Millie Whitney on Oct. 6, 1957, in Gettysberg, Pa. They lived in Bethesda, Md., where he worked as a salesman, managed parking garages and serviced sewing machines. They moved to Guthrie, where he repaired sewing machines.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Helen Ward, of Ohio; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters.

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, United Methodist Church, Bemidji.

Burial: Guthrie Cemetery, Hubbard County, Minn. Memorials are suggested to United Methodist Church Building Fund or charity of donor's choice (Olson-Schwartz, Bemidji).

Minnie Johnson

HALSTAD, Minn. -- Minnie Johnson, 97, Halstad, formerly of Hendrum, Minn., died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, in Halstad Lutheran Home, where she had lived since September 1991.

Minnie Dyrendahl was born April 29, 1901, the daughter of Christian and Emilie (Stegavig) Dyrendahl, in Hendrum, where she attended school. She worked as domestic help in the Hendrum area. She married Ernest Johnson on Nov. 30, 1924, in Ada, Minn. They lived in Hendrum until 1930, when they moved to Elm River Township, Traill County, N.D. They later rented land to farm. In 1942 they returned to Hendrum. In 1945 they purchased the farm and worked the land until 1962. Ernest Johnson died April 12, 1969. In 1989 she moved to Halstad.

She is survived by sons, Harry and Duane "Dewey" (Myra), Hendrum; daughters, Beverly (Frank) Todd, Hendrum, and Glendora, Calif., and Shirley Johnson, White Bear Lake, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Alfred, Emil and David; and a sister, Alma Lura.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Saturday, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hendrum.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, Fredrikson Valley Funeral Home, Halstad.

Burial: Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery.

Bergit Guynn

CLIMAX, Minn. -- Bergit Guynn, 104, Minneapolis, formerly of Washington, D.C., and Climax, died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998.

Bergit Steenerson was born Nov. 7, 1894, the daughter of Levi Steenerson and Sigri Ostby, in Climax, where she attended school. She graduated from Moorhead Normal School and George Washington University. She taught school in Minnesota and Montana. In 1919, she moved to Washington, D.C. She married Ray Guynn in 1922, in Alexandria, Va. They lived in Washington D.C. She worked for the U.S. Department of States as a GS9 intelligence research analyst for Central American countries. She retired in 1958. They spent summers in Woodlawn, Va. She moved to Minneapolis.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Norman Ray; and her husband.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday in Arlington (Va.) National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Friendship Village Employee Appreciation Fund, 8100 Highwood Drive, Bloomington, Minn., 55438, or the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. (Arlington Funeral Home).
