Barbara J. Murphy
Barbara J. (Connolly) Murphy, 78, of Arlington, formerly of Belmont, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000. She was the wife of the late Francis G. Murphy. She was born in Boston. Prior to retirement, she worked for the FBI as an administrative assistant. Mrs. Murphy is survived by a sister, Helen Callanan of Belmont; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was also sister of the late James M. Connolly. The funeral will take place today, Nov. 9 at 9 a.m., from the Stanton Funeral Home, 786 Mt. Auburn St., Watertown, with a funeral Mass in St. Jerome's Church, Lake St., Arlington, at 10 a.m. There are no visiting hours. Interment will be in Cambridge Cemetery. Rebecca S. Foster
Rebecca S. (Stoy) Foster, 103, of Belmont, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, at the Belmont Manor Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Richard Andros Foster. Born in McCook, New Brunswick, she was a Belmont resident for over 70 years. She was a 1922 graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music and a member of the Alumni Association. She taught at the conservatory for many years and was a contralto singer for more than 18 years. Mrs. Foster was predeceased by three brothers, Harold, Howard and Maxwell Stoy, and a sister, Miriam A. Stoy. A memorial service will be held in the All Saints' Episcopal Church, Common and Clark streets, Belmont, today, Nov. 9 at 9 a.m. Interment will be in Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Short, Williamson & Diamond Funeral Home, Belmont.
Daniel Katz
Daniel Katz of Belmont died suddenly October 22, 2000, at Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge. He was the husband of Myrna Kesselman. He was born and raised in Denver, Colo. He received a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Colorado at Boulder. After relocating to Cambridge in 1972, Mr. Katz attended the Art Institute of Boston and Boston University's School of Art. Mr. Katz, owner of Katz Cartoon Studio, was a self-employed cartoonist/caricaturist and began drawing as a young child. He drew political and commercial cartoons and caricatures in print for both large and small companies, and with other colleagues, did caricatures at various private and corporate events in the New England area. His legendary wit and humor expressed itself in his single line captions accompanying many of his cartoons. He formerly served on the Belmont Cultural Council and was a member of the Graphic Artists Guild and the Watertown-Belmont Chamber of Commerce. A funeral was held on Oct. 25 at the Goldman-Fisher Funeral Chapel in Malden, and burial was in Sharon. A scholarship fund to benefit a needy art student has been established in memory of Mr. Katz. Karen Kaufman Becker
Karen Kaufman Becker of Belmont, a nurse practitioner for two decades at the Brigham Internal Medicine Associates practice at Brigham and Women's Hospital, died suddenly Monday night, Oct 23, 2000, apparently of a heart attack, en route to Mt. Auburn Hospital. She was 53. According to Dr. Phyllis Jen, medical director of the ambulatory practice at the hospital, Ms. Kaufman, as she was known professionally, was titled "the rock" by her co-workers, for her steadfastness and commitment to the highest standards of patient care and education. She shared patients and worked closely with hundreds of residents who trained in internal medicine at the hospital. Over the years, her practice extended to thousands of Boston-area residents. Ms. Kaufman was born in Rochester, N.Y., Oct. 5, 1947. She earned her bachelor of science degree in nursing at Boston College, graduating magna cum laude in 1978. She received her master of science degree in nursing from Simmons College in 1980. She married Don Becker of Belmont in 1990, and they enjoyed long walks with their yellow labrador, Baxter. During her 20s, she traveled the world like a vagabond. She and her husband continued these travels, and they enjoyed a summer house in Truro, Mass. where she loved long walks along the beach and sharing time with family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Don Becker of Belmont; her sister, Linda Kliment of Webster, N.Y., and her nephew, David Kliment. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Karen Kaufman Fund, Brigham and Women's Hospital Development Office, 116 Huntington Avenue, 5th Floor, Boston, MA 02116. The fund is being established for patient care and education.
Eugenie Sarikechichian
Eugenie (Ibrahim) Sarikechichian, 71, a longtime resident of Belmont, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000, at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center East, Boston.
Born in Turkey, she was a member of the Armenian Ladies Guild and the Mount Auburn Hospital volunteer staff.
Mrs. Sarikechichian is survived by a son, Sam Ibrahim and his wife Maria; and three grandchildren. She was also sister of Victor Jelalian, Anoush Tavitian, Megerditch Kantardjian and the late Boghos and Garo Kantardjian.
Funeral services were held at St. Stephen's Armenian Church, Watertown, Thursday, Nov. 2, with interment in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
Memorial gifts in her memory may be made to St. Stephen's Armenian Church, 38 Elton Ave., Watertown.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Aram Bedrosian Funeral Home, Inc., Watertown.
Margaret Mullin
Margaret Mullin, 88, of Belmont, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at Belmont Manor Nursing Home. Born in County Galway, Ireland, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Julia (Kelly) Mullin. Prior to retirement she was employed by Boston City Hospital. She is survived by a sister, Catherine Crotty of Belmont; and a brother, William J. Mullin of Ireland. A sister, Ann Roche, died before her. Funeral services and interment, under the direction of the Stanton Funeral Service, Watertown, were private.
Jeanne Marie McKiernan
Jeanne Marie (Foley) McKiernan, of Belmont, died Nov. 6, 2000. She was the wife of the late John Joseph McKiernan.
Mrs. McKiernan was the daughter of William H. and Mary T. Foley. She was a graduate of North Cambridge Catholic High School, Class of 1968. She graduated from Mount Auburn Nursing School and had recently been elected chairman of St. Joseph Parish Counsel in Belmont.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her children, Patrick Andrew McKiernan and Katie Anne McKiernan; and five sisters, Mary Morgan, Deborah Foley, Tricia Unger, Anne Marie Foley, and Paula Foley.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Nov. 9, in St. Joseph Church.

Gladys Haines
Gladys (Bartlett) Haines, 82, formerly of Belmont and Waltham, died Oct. 10, 2000. She was the wife of Melvin Haines of Naples, Maine. Mrs. Haines was a 1936 graduate of Belmont High School. Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Richard Haines of Charlottesville, Va.; a daughter, Shirley Brace of Harrison, Maine; a sister, Esther Thomas of Belmont; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Services were held Oct. 13 in the United Methodist Church in Naples. Burial was in Edes Fall Cemetery, Naples.
Leo J. Cannon
DALLAS, Texas - Leo J. Cannon, formerly of Belmont, died Oct. 31, 2000, in California while on a business trip. Mr. Cannon was born in Belmont, the son of the late Dr. M. Leo and Marietta (McDonald) Cannon. He graduated from M.I.T. in 1961. Mr. Cannon was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a retired senior partner at Price, Waterhouse, Coopers following 37 years of service. He is survived by a daughter, Cindy Leigh Cannon-Aiena and her husband Michael J. of Waltham. Graveside services were held Nov. 10, in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Watertown. A celebration of Mr. Cannon's life was held Nov. 11, in the Westin Hotel. Robert R. Brown, MD
MANCHESTER, N.H. - Robert Russell Brown, MD, 82, formerly of Nashua, N.H. and Belmont, died Nov. 9, 2000. He was the husband of Norma Lee (Rutter) Brown. He was born in Belleville, N.J. on July 16, 1918, the son of the late Robert W. and Edna M. (Kansteiner) Brown. Prior to living in Manchester, he lived in Nashua for 14 years and in Belmont for more than 40 years. He also wintered in New Port Richie, Fla., for 12 years. Following graduation from high school, Dr. Brown received a bachelor's degree from Rutgers University in 1937, and then graduated from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathy in 1941. Dr. Brown had a family practice in Belmont for 48 years prior to his retirement in 1991. He also had been on the staff of Santa Maria Hospital and Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, and had been the medical director of the former Massachusetts Osteopathic Hospital in Jamaica Plain. While at his practice in Belmont, he had been appointed by the late Governor Christian Herter to the Massachusetts Board of Medicine for seven years. He was the original founder of the University of New England, College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, Maine, and had been on the school's Board of Trustees. In addition, Dr. Brown had taught at the University of New England for a short time. He held membership in and had been president of both the Massachusetts Osteopathic Association and the Belmont Rotary Club. He also had been a member of the Masonic fraternity of Belmont. Dr. Brown had been a member of Plymouth Congregational Church in Belmont and had taught Sunday School for 10 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Deborah L. Bulkley and her husband Craig of Derry, N.H.; a sister, Elizabeth Hill of Pompano Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also the father of the late Randell W. Brown, who died in 1995, and the brother-in-law of the late William R. Hill. A Service of Remembrance in his honor will be celebrated Saturday, Nov. 18, at 2 p.m. at Plymouth Congregational Church in Belmont. Friends are invited to attend. Interment in Mt. Auburn Cemetery will be private.
