Johnson
Ethel Johnson , 89
Funeral services for Ethel Mae Johnson , 89, of Saline were held June 13 at the Strange Methodist Church with the Rev. Albert Wayne Johnson officiating. Burial followed in the Strange Cemetery
in Readhimer.
Mrs. Johnson died June 11 at Fountain View Nursing Home.
Born July 15, 1913 in Bienville, she was a homemaker.
She is survived by her daughter, Peggy Ann Crowder and husband Cecil of Saline; son, Richard M. Johnson and wife Jackie of Springhill; brother, Huey P. Burch of Minden; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Rick Johnson , Randall Johnson , Eric Crowder, J.H. Weaver, Eddie Burch, Wayne Harrison, James Teague, Terry Malone and Robert Roy Weaver.
Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.
Holleman
Lois Holleman, 89
In the early morning hours of Saturday, June 14, 2003 at Bon Secours Maria Manor in St. Petersburg, Fla., Lois Holder Holleman went home to be with her Heavenly Father. She was born in Dubach on Dec. 18, 1914. Mrs. Holleman, a long-time resident of Simsboro, had spent the last four years in Tampa, Fla.
Visitation will be at the Southern Funeral Home in Jonesboro on Wednesday, June 18, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Celebration services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, June 19 at First Baptist Church in Simsboro with the Rev. Wilton Wall officiating. interment will be in the Simsboro Cemetery.
A graduate of Dubach High School, Mrs. Holleman attended Louisiana Tech. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Simsboro where she served in numerous capacities, but she especially loved her Sunday School Class that she taught for many years. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and sister, she will be missed by her family and friends, who will long remember her loving and caring spirit and her wonderful sense of humor.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Cliff Holleman; her father, William Daniel Holder; her mother, Bernice Jones Holder; a brother, Donald Greer Holder; a sister, Alice Holder Joiner; and a son, Stephen Frederick Holleman.
She leaves to cherish her memory and to celebrate her homecoming, three sons and two daughters, John William Holleman of Palm Springs, Calif., Kaye Holleman Gassie of Dallas, Robert Alexander Holleman and wife Georgia of Travelers Rest, S.C., Clifton Wayne Holleman and wife Pam of Midland, Texas and Deborah Lynn Weir and husband David of Tampa; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers and two sisters, William Daniel Holder of Jonesboro, John Felix Holder of Shreveport, Pauline Holder Perry of Shreveport and Jo Anne Holder Spigener of Minden; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Lyles
Mary Lyles, 85
Funeral services for Mary Mildred Lyles, 85, of Ruston were held June 15 at the Ansley Union Church with the Revs. Bill Stokes and William Sanderson officiating. Burial followed in the Ansley Cemetery.
Mrs. Lyles died June 13 at Pinehill Nursing Home.
Born July 25, 1917 in Hodge, she was a retired nurses aid from Lincoln General Hospital.
She is survived by daughters, Robbie Ramsey and husband Harvey of Shreveport and Shirley Walsworth and husband Paul of Quitman; sons, Royce Allen Lyles of Waynesboro, Miss., Bobby Lyles and wife Sharon of Jonesboro, Delmas Lyles of Ruston and Marshall E. Lyles of Quitman; sister, Iva Norred of Quitman; brother, Guy Farley of Shreveport; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were her grandsons.
Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.
Lewter
Margie Lewter, 72
Margie M. Lewter, 72, died in her home in Elephant Butte, N.M. on June 16. Mrs. Lewter was born in Jonesboro on April 2, 1931, the daughter of John Elmer Ferguson and Ethel Mae ( Smith) Ferguson.
Mrs. Lewter was a homemaker and a resident of Elephant Butte since 1969.She is survived by her husband, Huey Lewter of the family home; a son, Ronnie W. Lewter of Clovis, N.M.; two daughters, Peggy L. Scott of Los Lunas, N.M. and Blenda S. Helms and husband Rick of Houston; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held in Jonesboro. The time and date will be announced.
Springfield
Kenneth Springfield, 73
Funeral services for Kenneth Dale Springfield, 73, of Hodge were held June 12 at the Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Tom McCurley and Dwayne M. Boudreaux officiating. Burial followed in the Midway Cemetery.
Mr. Springfield died June 10 at Glenwood Medical Center.
Born Aug. 29, 1929 in Old Vernon, he was a retired oiler for Stone Container. He was also a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Kimble Springfield and mother, Neza Hammett.
He is survived by sisters, Wanda Thames and husband Alvin of West Monroe and Nelda Hammons and husband Lynn of West Monroe; brother, Elwyn G. Springfield and wife Nellie of West Monroe; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Bobby Brinson, Bobby Joe Folks, Doug Stokes, Edward Hughes, Bobby Schmidt and Robert Gaulden.
Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.
Thrasher
Lessie Thrasher, 94
Funeral Services will be held at the chapel of Edmond’s Funeral Home on Wednesday June 18 at 4 p.m. for Mrs. Lessie Lorine Cathey Thrasher of Jonesboro. Officiating will be Pastors Elton Gunter, Gene Cumpton, and Randy Lee. Ms. Lessie was born on October 12, 1908 in Bienville Parish, Louisiana . She Passed away quietly at 10 p.m. on Monday evening after a lengthy illness at the home of her niece and nephew, Bobby and Melba Murphy of Jonesboro. Mrs. Thrasher was 94. Mrs. Lessie had a passion for life and for the work of God. Until she became challenged by her health, Mrs. Thrasher was an active and devout member of Ebenezer Baptist Church of Jonesboro. Ms. Lessie enjoyed her involvement in community affairs — whether participating in voicing her opinion on political issues during Federal, State or Local elections, or through her donations to various charities and to those who are disabled and disadvantaged, including St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
Mrs. Thrasher enjoyed a long and fruitful life, and she enjoyed the company of all people — most especially her friends and family. Survivors include one brother, Emory Cathey of Jonesboro, two sisters, Mrs. Agnes Irvin of Jonesboro and Mrs. Lucille Sutton of Ruston. As well, she is survived by her caregivers — a special niece and nephew, Bobby and Melba Murphy and family of Jonesboro. She is survived, as well, by another special niece, Mrs. Martha Louise Goza and husband Fred of Shreveport. Mrs. Thrasher was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. John Thrasher of Jonesboro, as well as by her mother, three sisters, and one brother. She was employed by Bellsouth for over 40 years, having retired in 1963. She regularly attended meetings for Bellsouth retirees, where she frequently received recognition for being the oldest living retiree from the Bellsouth system. The family would like to offer their sincere gratitude to Ms. Lessie’s faithful caregivers and special friends, Mrs. Jan Meek, Mrs. Serona Plunkett, and Mrs. Gwen Paggett, all of whom stayed by her side both day and night to ensure that she received the best of care during her last days. Pallbearers will be Travis Ables, D.J. Allen, Donald Johns, Randy McKinney, Aylon Pate and Billy Ray Peters
interment will be in the Jonesboro Cemetery

Mott
Steven Mott, 19
Funeral services for Steven Wayne Mott, 19, of Chatham were held June 11 at The Fishnet Church with the Revs. Russell Rhodes and Sherwood Smith officiating. Burial followed in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Mott died June 9.He is survived by his parents, Gerald and Barbara Mott of Chatham; sister, Stacy Mott of Chatham; paternal grandmother, Doris Mott of Chatham; maternal grandparents, Carl and Ruby Pool of Chatham; uncles, John Mott of West Monroe and Michael Pool of Eros; aunt, Kathryn Mosley of Chatham; great-grandmother, Minnie Mott of West Monroe; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers were Joshua Palmer, Joseph Johnson , Stevie Myers, Ricky Smith, Mike Watson and Eugene Harper.
Services were under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Jonesboro.
Oliver
Laverne Oliver, 84
Funeral services for Laverne D. Oliver, 84, of Jonesboro were held June 5 at the Jonesboro Cemetery
with Henry Glen Jordan officiating. Mrs. Oliver died June 4 at St. Francis Medical Center.
Born July 17, 1918 in Dodson, she was a long-time resident of Jonesboro and retired from the Continental Can Bag Mill of Hodge.
She is survived by a son, Jesse F. Oliver and wife Mona of Monroe; grandson, Kevin M. Oliver of Monroe; and niece, Joann Barnes of Miami, Fla.
Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.
Simpson
James Simpson, 79
Funeral services for James E. “Tip” Simpson, 79, of Farmerville were held June 6 at the Evergreen Baptist Church in Farmerville with the Revs. Mickey Bounds and Harvey Hoffman officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Cemetery.
Mr. Simpson died June 4 in Farmerville.
Mr. Simpson was retired from the D.O.T.D. and a member of Evergreen Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Larene B. “Jo” Simpson of Farmerville; son, Eddie Joe Simpson and wife Marcie of Jonesboro; daughters, Rean and Dean Simpson, both of Farmerville; granddaughters, Lindsey, Shelby and Jolea Grace Simpson of Jonesboro; sisters, Clovis Bing of Shreveport, Letha Holder of Shreveport, Faye Rogers of Bernice and Bettye Holloway of Houston.
Honorary pallbearers were Glynn Tucker, Bill Jinks, Clifford Simpson, Anthony Yakaboski and the walking group at First Baptist Church.
Pallbearers were Greg Clary, Johnny Holder, Donnie Gates, Doug Simpson, Roger Simpson, Bruce Patton, C.E. “Shorty” Aulds, Frank Hutson (honorary) and Mickey Fontana.
Memorials can be made to the Evergreen Baptist Church.
Services were under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Farmerville.
Taylor
Andrew Taylor , 60
A.Jack Taylor , age 60, beloved husband and cherished father, of Jonesboro, La., went to be with the Lord on June 7, 2003. Services were held in his honor, Monday, June 9, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church with interment following in the church cemetery. Officiating the memorial services were Rev. Randy Lee, Rev. Marty Wright and Rev. Truman Leach.
Mr. Taylor was born February 18, 1943 in Dodson, La. He graduated from Dodson High School and later obtained a Master’s Degree from La. Tech University. Following graduation he pursued a career as a teacher and coach at Winnfield Jr. High School before transferring to Weston High School. He later obtained occupation as a farmer and residential building contractor.
In addition to his work, his many accomplishments include but are not limited to the following: Former state President of the La. Poultry Grower’s Association, former Jackson Parish School Board member, Deacon of Ebenezer Baptist Church for 22 years, former Sunday School teacher, and served on numerous church committees and organizations.
Mr. Taylor is preceded in death by his daughter, Danielle T. Nardone, his father-in-law, Basil H. Conn, and best friend and brother-in-law, Tommy H. Conn. He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Eileen C. Taylor , of Jonesboro, La.; daughter, Carrie B. Taylor , of Atlanta, Ga.; son-in-law, Jeff Nardone, of Duluth, Ga.; mother and father Flora and H.J. Taylor of Gansville, La.; sister Shirley Tubbs and husband Ernest of Gansville, La.; mother-in-law, Margaret Conn of Jonesboro, La.; sisters-in-law, Nancy Harberson and husband Dennis of Ruston, La., Sandra Hale and husband Duane of El Dorado, Ark., Debbie Conn Parker and husband Roy of Jonesboro, La. and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.
Serving as pallbearers were Mike Staples, Jimmy Walker, Donald Wyatt, Rudolph Tarver, Delwyn Peters and Ricky Peel. Honorary pallbearers were Phil Milstead and Bobby Smith.
The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the many churches and friends who have supported, prayed and encouraged them during such a trying time. They ask for your continued prayers in the following days and months for peace and understanding. They know that Jack will be missed, but realize that Heaven is as blessed with his presence as was his former home here on earth.

Barry Tolar, 51
Funeral services for Barry C. Tolar, 51, of Choudrant were held June 6 at the Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston with the Rev. Larry L. Jinks officiating. Burial followed in the Sibley Cemetery
in Choudrant.
Mr. Tolar died June 3 in Shreveport after a lengthy illness.He is survived by his wife, Sherry Tolar of Choudrant; daughters, Christine Gift of Alvin, Texas and Katelyn Tolar of Choudrant; sons, Justin Tolar and Jonathan Tolar, both of Choudrant; step-children, Brian Traweek of Calhoun and Michelle Freeman of West Monroe; mother, Viola Pardue of Chatham; grandmother, Lydia Brewster of Choudrant; siblings, Lynn Tolar of Winnfield; Gloria Tucker of Ruston, Larry C. Tolar of Ruston, Nina Robertson of Arcadia, Sharon Hott of Ruston, Ester Spears of Quitman, Theresa Norman of Choudrant and Loresea Tolar of West Monroe; three grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Honorary pallbearers were L.J. Freeman and James Brewster.
Pallbearers were Brian Traweek, Nathan Spears, Shayne Norman, Steven Trevillion, Toby Trevillion and Chad Tolar.
