Doris Marie Slayback, 86, of Latonia, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Latonia. A daughter, Alice Slayback, died in 1992.
Survivors include daughters, Dorothy Slayback of Latonia, Patricia Bargo of Independence and Doris Jean Bamberger of Edgewood; brothers, David Cliff of Cincinnati and Paul Cliff of Michigan; a sister, Gloria Burris of Cincinnati; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Connley Bros. Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Edward Sparks, 48, of Dayton, died Saturday at his home. He was a sales representative with Builders Specialties Hardware Co. He was a member of Kersten O'Day VFW Post No. 2899, Dayton, and the OK Horseshoe and Belmont Horseshoe clubs. He was an Army veteran of the Vietname War.
Survivors include a son, Edward Sparks of Pleasant View, S.C.; a daughter, Angela Sparks of Florence; his parents, Charles and Della Brouhard Sparks of California, Ky.; brothers, Larry Little of Clinton, Tenn., Ray Sparks and John Sparks, both of California; and sisters, Edna Govan of Silver Grove, Debbie O'Mary of Knoxville, Tenn., and Nora Jones of California.
Services will be at noon Tuesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery, Mentor.

Phyllis Stutler, 58, of Covington, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. She was a printer with Complete Printing Inc., Cincinnati.
Survivors include a son, Phil Stutler of Covington; a daughter, Laurie Stutler of Covington; her mother, Sarah Doker of Covington; a sister, Sarah Welles of Covington; and five grandchildren.

Thomas L. Winkle, 67, of Dayton, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. He was a retired employee of Pepsi Cola Co. and a member of Butler Baptist Church.
Survivors include sons, Kenneth Winkle and Thomas Winkle Jr., both of Florida, and Larry Chambers of Ft. Mitchell; a daughter, Janice Winkle of Indiana; a brother, George Winkle of Butler; a sister, Bertha Harper of Cincinnati; and several grandchildren.
Services were this morning at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Burial was in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Berry.

Basketball star Robert Naber Sr., was CovCath's first paid coach
Robert E. Naber Sr. used a basketball to thrill and to teach.
As a player at Covington Catholic High School and the University of Louisville, he performed to standing ovations.
But after his playing years, Mr. Naber kept kept using his gifts to reach out to others as Covington Catholic's first full-time basketball coach and as a baseball coach and volunteer at a swim club.
"He was my high school coach, and he was very special to me," said Ken Shields, head coach of Northern Kentucky University men's basketball team. "He was very much instrumental in my decision to want to pursue the profession."
Mr. Naber, 68, of Ft. Wright, died at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
He was a retired plant manager with Hilltop Concrete Co., Cincinnati, and a member of St. Agnes Church, Ft. Wright. He was a past president of the Standard Club, Covington, and active in the South Hills Civic Club.
After college, Mr. Naber played professionally with the Indianapolis Olympians of the National Basketball Association.
In addition to being the school's first paid basketball coach, Mr. Nabor was an athletic director and teacher at Covington Catholic. He coached and taught there until 1964.
"He was a good teacher. He understood the game, and we respected him for his knowledge. But he was also a friend of the players. You enjoyed playing for him. He made the whole process fun," Mr. Shields said.
Mr. Naber was a member of the Northern Kentucky High School Athletic Directors Hall of Fame, the Northern Kentucky Hall of Fame, and the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame. He was also a past president of Covington Catholic Alumni Athletic Association.
"There is no hall of fame he is not in," said his wife, Barbara A. Spencer Naber. She said one hall of fame proclaimed, "In modern-day lingo, he would be called the franchise man."
Mr. Naber was a tried-and-true Kentuckian, turning down out-of-state basketball scholarships.
"He could have left and gone someplace else, but he chose to stay here. Covington Catholic was the love of his life," Mrs. Naber said.
She said Mr. Naber left his teaching job for Hilltop Concrete to better support his family. Still, he kept coaching and volunteering.
"He had a wonderful career. He loved teaching. He loved being with the kids," Mrs. Naber said.
"All his old school chums remained faithful to their friendship," Mrs. Naber said. "We had a wonderful life together."
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Robert E. Naber Jr. of Covington; daughters, Terri Kunzelmann of LaVerne, Calif., and Linda Mikhail of Park Hills; a stepson, Chris Meader of Independence; a brother, Charles Naber of St. Augustine, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.
Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Agnes Church, Ft. Wright. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. A reception will follow the burial in the St. Agnes Church undercroft. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes. Association, 721 W. Mary Katheryn Banks, 75, of Bedford, died Monday at King's Daughters Hospital in Madison, Ind. She was a lab technician with Kurfee Paint Co., Louisville. A son, Robert Devon Piles, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a brother, J. C. Banks of Bedford.

Josephine Boston, 78, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died Saturday at her home. She was a member of Ninth Street Methodist Church, Covington. Her husband, Edward Boston, died in 1991.

Rose Virginia Caudill, 70, of Lakeside Park, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a housekeeper with Holiday Inn.

Teresa Brooks Dalhover, 37, of Union, died Feb. 4 as a result of injuries she suffered in an auto accident on U.S. 42 in Union. She was a homemaker.
