Glenn V. Middleton of Burlington Township
Services for Glenn V. Middleton, 88, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Sycamore United Methodist Church. The Rev. Arlene Christopherson will officiate.
Born July 14, 1910, on the family farm, he passed away peacefully Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at his home. Interment will be in South Burlington Cemetery, Ramm Road, Burlington Township.
Mr. Middleton had lived all of his life on the family farm. After graduating from Burlington High School, he began working the farmlands and soon took to raising cattle as well. A man who was born to farm and knew it, Glenn loved the land and the labor, but also enjoyed the business challenge that went hand in hand with success.
As a young man, Glenn was involved with a rural youth organization sponsored by the Kane County Farm Bureau. Ironically, he was elected president of that organization while the young lady who would become his wife was elected secretary/treasurer.
Though several years would pass before he would ask for her hand, it was clear that Johannah Kiergaard and Glenn Middleton were made for each other. On June 10, 1939, they were united in marriage on the Kiergaard family farm in LaFox. They made their home on the Middleton farm, where Glenn built his bride a lovely home on the very foundation of a house that had once stood on the family farm.
From his early years, Glenn was a cattle feeder and, true to his nature, he continued cattle farming to the very day of his death. As one of the last cattlemen in the county, his life also stands as an example of a vanishing breed of men whose word was as good as their bond and, across the country, thousands of dollars changed hands securely with little more than a handshake.
A quiet man who thought and spoke in concrete terms and who put his faith in simple truths, Glenn was also a man with vision and courage who served his community with energy and devotion.
He was a member of Sycamore United Methodist Church for 45 years, the Kane County Mutual Fire Insurance Company board of directors for20 years, the Burlington Drainage Ditch #1 Commission for 50 years, the South Burlington Cemetery
board for 40 years, the Farmers Grain and Lumber Company board of directors for 30 years, the Sycamore school board for six years, the Burlington school board for six years, the Kane County Soil Conservation Board for six years and the Kane County Farm Bureau board for six years.
Apart from his service to his fellow man, Glenn was first and foremost devoted to his family and saw to it that his children were not only well educated, but well rounded through visits to museums and travel to other parts of the country. Though he never attended college, Glenn was truly a lifelong studentof the world.
In addition to his wife, Johannah, he is survived by his children.
