Author Jack Olsen

Author Jack Olsen, age 77, died at his home July 16.
He was born June 7, 1925, in Indianapolis, Ind., to Rudolph and Florence (Drecksage) Olsen.
Olsen wrote for Vanity Fair, People, Paris Match, Readers Digest, Playboy, Life, Sports Illustrated, Fortune, the New York Times Book Review and others publications.
He was the author of 31 books published in 15 countries and 11 languages. One book entitled "Slaughter the Animals, Poison the Earth" (1971) wrote about sheepherders in northwest Colorado using poisons to kill predators.
His magazine journalism appears in 13 anthologies.
Olsen was called "the dean of true crime authors" by the Washington Post and the New York Daily News, and "the master of true crime" by the Detroit Free Press and Newsday.
He is survived by his mother, Florence Mae Olsen; his wife, Su Olsen, Bainbridge Island; three sons, John R. (Diane) Olsen, Niwot, Colo., Evan Olsen, Little Rock, Ark., and Harper Olsen, Seattle; four daughters, Susan (Rich) Jetley, Boulder, Colo., Julia Olsen, Denver, Barrie (Frank) Olsen, New York City, N.Y., Emily Sara (Korum) Bischoff, Bainbridge Island; one sister, Carolyn Grentz, Havertown, Pa.; and seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jonathon Rhodes Olsen.
Remembrances can be made to the Sierra Club or to Helpline House of Bainbridge Island.

Mary Ellen (Ridings) Baird
Oct. 7, 1920 - July 22, 2002
Mary Ellen (Ridings) Baird passed away on July 22 in Montrose. She was 81. Mary was born Oct. 7, 1920, to Addison Clifford and Martha (Phillips) Ridings in Holbrook, Ariz. She spent her childhood in Meeker and was graduated from high school there. She spent 43 years in Meeker and was employed as a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 12 years. This was a job she enjoyed immensely. She also loved being in the mountains,
iking, rock collecting and picnicking. Mary enjoyed music and studied ornithology. She was a gifted, creative cook. As her physical strength decreased, Mary's spiritual strength increased. In her declining years, she believed she was left on earth to pray for others. Our comfort is that mom is at last pain-free and joyous in the arms of her Savior Jesus Christ. We will be reunited with her in Paradise.
Survivors include her four daughters, Lois Blackmom of Kernersville, N.C.; Carolyn Kendall-Wildrick of Evergreen; Deanna McKinney of Colleyville, Texas; Barbara Shults of Montrose; five grandsons, Greg Warren, Eddie Wildrick, Bret McKinney, Christopher McKinney and Clint Shults; two great-grandsons, Michael Warren and Charles Warren along with three great-granddaughters, Maclaine Shults, Aryn McKinney and Madison Shults.

Ruth C. Danielson
March 6, 1914 - July 15, 2002
Ruth C. Danielson, 88, died peacefully at the Pikes Peak Hospice Monday, July 15, 2002.
Ruth Collette Keefe was born March 6, 1914, to James Edward Keefe and Mabel Clara (Cassidy) Keefe in New Rockford, N.D. She was the fourth of five daughters: Esther Miller, Mildred Ecklund, Margaret Lucille (Jung) Friedl and Mary Katherine 'Pat' Hanson.
Ruth grew up in New Rockford and Carrington, N.D., graduating high school from New Rockford. She worked as a secretary in Bismarck, N.D.
Ruth married Roderick Warren Danielson on Nov. 1, 1937, in Cathy, N.D. They had three children, Lea Collette, Mark Giles and Judith Katherine.
Following Rod’s service as a counter-intelligence officer in WWII, they lived a year in Venezuela while he worked for Richmond Oil Co. Then they moved to Rangely — living there for 24 years while Rod worked for Chevron Oil Company. Both Rod and Ruth served the oil boom community in many ways as it grew, through helping start PTA, community concerts, scouting and their local church, St. Ignatius Catholic Church. Ruth knitted and sewed exquisitely. She and Rod also enjoyed playing bridge, hunting and fishing and prospecting for uranium. Rod served on the school board for many years. After the children were grown, Rod was transferred to Midland, Texas. They lived there about seven years. They traveled extensively. After his retirement they moved to Colorado Springs in 1978. Rod died on Aug. 3, 1988.
Ruth is survived by her daughters, Lea Dickinson of Colorado Springs and Judy Danielson of Fort Collins. Her son, Air Force Capt. Mark Danielson, was shot down on June 18, 1972, in southeast Asia and remains missing. Ruth fought tenaciously for 30 years to get her son back. Ruth and Rod made many dear friends who shared their concern for the POW/MIA issue across the country. For example, in 1991 the Pikes Peak Chapter of the Harley Owners Group 'adopted' Ruth and Mark giving her an Honorary No. 1 Lifetime Membership card and a ride through the city on the back of a Harley. In her thank you speech, Ruth declared, 'In my youth I aspired to be the belle of the ball, but now I am thrilled to be the Hag of the HOGS.' Despite excavations in 1994 of Mark’s crash site, Ruth never believed there was enough evidence to prove the death of Mark and the other 11 missing crewmen. Her feisty, spunky attitude, witty humor, hard work and strong-will will be missed by all.
Ruth is also survived by nine grandchildren: Paul Dickinson (Lori), Lisa Corboy (Chip); Mark Danielson, Jr.; Jody Willey; Amber Willey; Matthew Dickinson (Dena); Jesse Dickinson; Jula Willey and Dane Willey and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her youngest sister 'Pat' Hanson and nieces: JoAnn Kline (Dick), Lynnette Jung-Springberg (Peter), Marianne Van Oort (Arnold) and nephew Jim Hanson (Linda).
Her parents, her husband Roderick, and her three older sisters preceded Ruth in death.
A memorial service was held Friday, July 19 at 7 p.m. at the Shrine of Remembrance in Colorado Springs. Private internment was at Fort Logan National Cemetery

Randy Joe Smith
April 21, 1959 - July 3, 2002
Randy Joe Smith of Grand Junction passed away July 3, 2002, at St. Mary’s Hospital. Randy was born April 21, 1959, to Clifton O. and Jo Ann Shaw Smith. He was graduated from Rangely High School. He was a member of the rodeo club and was a bull rider. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and attended in Palisade. Randy worked as a ranch hand, heavy equipment operator and general laborer until he retired at a very early age due to a disability.
He was a devoted father and is survived by his daughter Patricia Ann Smith and his son Ethan Wayne Smith. He is survived by his mother Jo Ann, one sister Franki B. Smith and a niece Shonte Lynn Smith all of Grand Junction. Aunts, uncles and a host of friends also survive Randy. His father and grandparents preceded him in death.
A potluck service of remembrance will be held at 3064 Sandpiper Avenue, Grand Junction on Saturday, July 13 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Mark Johnson officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan Edfast Mortuary.
Richard Barnes
Richard Barnes, 73, of Meeker passed away Jan. 10, 2004, at the Walbridge Wing. Barnes worked as a laundry worker at the State Regional Center.
Barnes is survived by sons Mark Barnes of Grand Junction, Butch 'Nelson' Stewart of Floriscent, Colo., Robert Rowe, John Rowe and Perry Rowe all of Norwood, Colo. He is also survived by daughters Loretta McCoy of Meeker, Donna Hopkins of Redvale, Colo., and Ruth Clark of Pahrump, Nev., and sisters Audra Smith of Fremont, Neb., and Edna May Kinsey of Texarkana, Texas, Barnes is also survived by 16 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Walbridge Wing, Pioneers Hospital, 335 Cleveland, Meeker, Colo., 81641. Services will be held Sat., Jan. 17, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the Martin Chapel, 734 South Seventh Street in Grand Junction. Arrangements have been entrusted to Martin Mortuary.
Thomas (Tommy) O. Stotts
August 11, 1909 ~ January 4, 2004
Thomas (Tommy) O. Stotts was born Aug. 11, 1909, in Beaver City, Okla. His childhood days were spent in Oklahoma and Texas. As a young man, due to the dustbowl, Tommy moved to California in search of work. Tommy worked on the aquaduct water project, building series of canals and siphons to bring water into the LA Basin. He then worked as a batch plant operator on the Keswick Dam and the Pit River Bridge outside of Redding, Calif. In the mid 1930s Tommy moved to Grand Junction, Colo., and worked miscellaneous jobs. He married Shirley Doolittle in 1934 and of this union, two daughters were born, Sherian and Relda. Tommy and Shirley moved back to California where Tommy started his career as a chef. He managed several restaurants in the 1940s before moving back to Colorado. Tommy and Shirley divorced and Tommy married Rowena Nelson, which added two stepsons, Terry and Tom to the family. Tommy and Rowena owned several restaurants in Colorado including the 'Texan Café' and 'Tommy’s Supper Club' in Rifle before heading back to California. They stayed in California this time for just a few years before coming to Meeker and opening up the 'Stagecoach Inn.' He eventually sold the 'Stagecoach' to his brother-in-law and opened the 'White River Restaurant and Palomino Lounge,' which was located where The Bakery is now. His final endeavor and greatest love was 'Tommy’s Supper Club and Cocktail Lounge' in Meeker. Tommy was known by all for coming out of the kitchen in full uniform and his chef’s hat and visiting with each and every customer. He was also known to join the weekend bands and play his harmonica. After retiring, he and Rowena moved to St. George, Utah. Tommy finally had time for fishing, gardening, and spending time with his pets. After Rowena’s death in 1988, he spent his summers in Meeker and his winters in St. George. In the fall of 1989, Tommy came back to Meeker and proudly donned his uniform one last time when he helped the Steiners open the 'Stagecoach.' In 1990, he married Catherine Burdick in St. George. They relocated to Cyril, Okla., for a short while before moving back to Grand Junction to be close to his daughters. He lived to be 94 years young and his last few years were spent living life to the fullest. Tommy never met a stranger, and had a way of making people laugh. Everyone Tommy encountered he befriended. He was very generous and would do anything for anyone especially his daughters, and grandchildren. Tommy is survived by his wife, Catherine, his two daughters, Sherian (Bud) Linderman of Grand Junction, Relda (Gary) Coulter of Meeker, two stepsons, Terry (Artie) Nelson of Green Valley, Ariz., Tom (Beth) Nelson of Moreno, Calif., eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren and numerous relatives and friends.
Memorial Services were Jan. 15 at 2 p.m. at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary in Grand Junction.

Eric L. Cross

Grace M. Cross
March 1, 1929 ~ January 2, 2004
Eric Lloyd Cross, 76, died at his home in Palisade, Colo., on Dec. 27, 2003, after a long illness. Eric was born May 11, 1927, in Kepling, Saskatchewan Canada, to George and Ida Cross. He grew up on the family farm helping raise livestock and horses.
Grace Mary Cross, 74, died at her home in Palisade on Jan. 2, 2004, after a 4 1/2-year battle with cancer. Grace was born to Charles and Julia Daku on March 1, 1929, in Kipling, Saskatchewan Canada. She grew up on the family farm helping raise livestock and herd sheep.
When Eric was 18 and Grace was 16 they went to Briercrest Bible Institute in Caronport, Saskatchewan where Eric became a minister. On Aug. 5, 1949, after being childhood sweethearts, their lives were joined together in marriage. In 1951 they moved to Ecuador as missionaries with Gospel Missionary Union (now known as Avant). In 1955 they returned to the U.S. because of a serious illness Grace had. After her recovery they went to Del Rio, Texas, where they served as missionaries for six years. In 1962 they moved the family to Alamosa, Colo., where Eric attended Adams State College earning a bachelor’s degree in special education. They also ministered to the many migrants that worked the fields of the San Luis Valley. In 1966 they moved to Palisade. Eric began working as a teacher at the Regional Center and Grace worked as a technician there.
Eric eventually became the principal of the school and Grace became a dorm supervisor. While working they remodeled their home and Eric went to night school at Western State College in Gunnison, earning his master’s degree in special education.
Eric also served as an interim minister in many churches throughout western Colorado and eastern Utah. Among them were: the Molina Baptist Church, Palisade Baptist Church and Liberty Baptist Church. Grace always accompanied Eric and was his life, his support and his sermon critic.
They cherished the many friendships they formed during these ministries, some of their closest friends helped care for Eric during his extended illness. After Eric retired he served as the coordinator of the soup kitchen and help desk for the Palisade Migrant Center. Grace was by his side cooking and cleaning. While there they used their ability to speak Spanish to benefit the migrant workers During their years of retirement they loved spending time with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were always available to baby-sit and offer words of encouragement and wisdom. They were a living example on Earth of God’s unconditional love.
Over the years they ran their own version of a 'bed and breakfast' for friends and family who came their way and loved to show them the beautiful scenery of western Colorado and eastern Utah.
Eric was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Clayton. Grace was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Irene Berglund Dew and brothers, Stan, Gus and Stephen Daku, sister-in-laws Shirley and Vi Daku, and brother-in-laws Ed Browtzke and Sine Berglund all of Canada. They are survived by two daughters, Carolyn (Dewey) Atkinson of Grand Junction, Arla (Larry) Carver; one son, Dean (Laurale) Cross of Palisade. Six grandchildren, Lance (Heather) Hill of Grand Junction; Brock (Annie) Norris of Clifton; Chad Carver of Orlando, Fla.; Tara (Aaron) Brown of Loveland; Jason Cross of Palisade; Rachel Cross of Palisade and two great-grandchildren, Patricia and Eric Hill of Grand Junction. They are also survived by Eric’s sister, Gail (Ross) Jorgensen and his sister-in-law Irene Cross, as well as Grace’s brothers Charlie (Frieda) Daku, Alex (Joyce) Daku, and Emil Daku, sister Elsie Browatzke, sister-in-law Gladys (Jim) Burke, brother-in-law Ansley Dew and many nieces and nephews, all of Canada. The sounds of Eric’s hammer and the smell of Grace’s roses will live with us forever. We will miss you both.

Marguarette Ann Shively
February 18, 1916 ~ December 31, 2003
Marguarette Shively, 87, was born Feb. 18, 1916, in Denver to Charles R. and Mary E. (Cameron) Jones. Their family moved to 12-Mile Mesa in 1919 and then lived in Anaconda, Mont., from 1925-1929. They returned to Craig and she was graduated from high school in 1934.
Shively married Charles A. Shively on April 19, 1936, in Craig. They lived in Bear River, Colo., Oakland, Calif., Rangely and Baggs, Wyo., however, they always considered Craig their home.
They moved to Meeker in 1996 to be near their daughter and son-in-law, Jo and Bob Tucker. Marguarette was very fond of her three granddaughters.
She enjoyed helping others, visiting with family and friends, knitting and crocheting. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Craig and attended Holy Family Catholic Church in Meeker while residing there. Marguarette was a lovely lady with an enormous capacity to give of her talents and share her love with other people.
Shively is survived by a daughter, Jo Tucker, married to Robert Tucker of Meeker, grandchildren Shelette Gustafson, married to Rick Gustafson, Bobbie Jo Tucker, and Erin Tucker, all of Denver and by numerous nieces and nephews.
Shively was preceded in death by husband, Chuck; parents; sisters, Marie Hanson and Agnes Miles and brothers, Charles Jr. and Jack Jones.
Kathryn L. Anderson

Funeral services will be held for Kathryn L. Anderson Saturday, Jan. 10 at 11 a.m. at the Evangelical Free Church of Chico, Calif. She died Dec. 30, 2003 of cancer.
Anderson was born in Grand Junction, Colo. and was raised on a sheep and cattle ranch in Meeker. She was graduated from Meeker High in 1963 with honors and received a scholarship to the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley where she majored in elementary education and minored in music. She was graduated in 1967 and moved west to work with a Christian organization in California where she met her husband Paul. They were married in June of 1970 and settled in Chico.
Anderson began teaching at Chico Christian School at its inception and taught there for 17 years. She retired from full-time teaching to care for her elderly parents, Henry and Alice Jacobs. During this time, she tutored elementary and junior high students.
Anderson continued her music by playing her clarinet in both church and the university orchestras. She was an avid seamstress and spent many happy hours making beautiful quilts and apparel for relatives and friends.
Anderson is survived by her husband Paul of Chico; daughters Karen Berryhill of St. Joseph, Mich. and her husband Jason, Kristin Caywood of Rio Lindo, Calif. and her husband Fred; foster daughter Robyn Young of Chico; father Henry Jacobs of Chico; grandson Ethan Berryhill and granddaughter Harley.
Joseph Charles Orris, Jr.
February 5, 1929 ~ December 20, 2003
Joseph Charles Orris, Jr. passed away Dec. 20, 2003, at his home in Fruita, Colo. He was 74 years of age.
Visitation was from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at Martin Mortuary Chapel. Funeral Services were on Dec. 24, 2003, at Martin Mortuary. Graveside committal services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at Veterans Memorial Cemetery
of Western Colorado.
Joseph was born Feb. 5, 1929, to Joseph C. and Anne Lilley Orris at East Millsboro, Penn., where he was graduated from Brownsville High School. He attended Pierce College at Woodland Hills, Calif., where he received his associates in agriculture. On Dec. 23, 1959, he married Mary (Lil) Orris at Tarzana, Calif.
Joseph served his country in the U.S. Air Force and retired as a master sergeant after 23 years of service. Joseph and Mary lived in Meeker for 25 years, where he was self employed, until moving to Fruita 6 1/2 years ago. Most importantly he was a Wal-mart greeter which he enjoyed immensely.
Joseph was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Grand Junction, the Eagles and V.F.W. He enjoyed his grandchildren, greeting people at Wal-mart and was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. People is what he enjoyed the most.
Surviving Joseph are his wife, Mary (Lil) Orris of Fruita; son, Joseph C. Orris, III of Grand Junction; daughters, Judy Bingham (Billy) of Craig, Maxine Frick (Mike) of Loma; brothers, John 'Jay' (Carmen) Orris of Meeker; sisters, Pauline (Jack) Izett of Brownsville, Penn., Ann Meikle of Monongahela, Penn.; five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Clarence V. Messenger
June 23, 1923 ~ December 18, 2003
Clarence V. Messenger, 80, of Grand Junction and formerly Rangely resident passed away Dec. 18 at St. Mary’s Hospital.
Born to Charles and Phiana Messenger on June 23, 1923, in Brighton, Iowa, he was the youngest of 11 children. He worked for the U.S. B.O.R. and retired from Flaming Gorge Dam, Utah, as a control room operator in 1984. He was proud to have served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII as a mechanic.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Viola and three daughters, Linda Blanchard (Warren) of Dutch John, Utah; Barbara of Grand Junction and Joan of Colorado Springs. Two sisters, Wilma and Osie of Washington, Iowa; 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. After retirement, they enjoyed working as camp ground hosts in Colorado, Utah, Arizona and Oregon. They attended Clifton Christian Church.
There was a private viewing Monday, Dec. 22 at 11 a.m. at Martin Mortuary at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Karl R. Cox
October 24, 1929 ~ December 19, 2003
Lifelong Rio Blanco County resident Karl R. Cox, 74, died Dec. 19, 2003, at his ranch home south of Meeker.
Karl was born Oct. 24, 1929, on the family ranch, the son of Luther Orson and Effie Ellen (Gillaspie) Cox. He attended Meeker schools and in 1951 was inducted into the United States Army. Following his discharge he returned to Meeker where he resumed the ranch work he loved and was admired for throughout his life. He will long be remembered for be a man of deep integrity with a true sense of honesty.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy (Rienau) Cox of the family home, three daughters, Ellen (Lester) Jerome and Ruth Ann Cox, both of Meeker, Mary (David) Brown of Rangely; eight grandchildren, Karl R. (Caron) Wakefield and Karolyn Wakefield, both of Meeker; Bo (Cory) Cox of Fruita; Jerry Cox and Krystal Wakefield, both of Meeker; Hollie Brueggeman of Rangely, Kyle Brueggeman of Fruita and Michael Parker of Rangely. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Jazzmyne, Ambriel, Pauton, Joelle and Anna, two sister-in-laws, Shirley Cox of Rangely, Doris Valora of Tijeras, N.M., and his nieces and nephews, Wade and Dean Cox of Rangely, Jack Valora of Cheyenne, Wyo., June Valora of Greeley and Donna Valora of Albuquerque, N.M.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 22 from the Meeker Ward Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Interment was made in the Highland Cemetery
of Meeker under the direction of Cochran Memorial Chapel.
Mildred LaVerne McCarver
November 19, 1931 ~ December 17, 2003
Mildred LaVerne Mc-Carver, 72, long time resident of Rangely, currently living in Fruita, passed away Dec. 17.
Services were held at the First Baptist Church of Rangely on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003. Interment followed in the Rangely Cemetery.
Mildred was born to Ida Belle and Edward Nitzschke in Limestone County, Texas, on Nov. 19, 1931. She married Howard Franklin McCarver on Jan. 24, 1954, in Marlin, Texas, at the United Methodist Church. Howard preceded her in death on Dec. 21, 1988. Mildred was graduated from Marlin High School at the age of 16 and then enrolled in a business school, earning a certificate of completion one-year later. After marriage Mildred followed Howard to Colorado, where he resided and worked for Chevron Pipeline Company.
Mildred had various bookkeeping jobs before having children. She returned back to work several years later and was employed at the accounting office in Rangely where she worked from 1968 to 1990. Mildred, also known as Millie, served as the church secretary and treasurer for the First Baptist Church in Rangely, and donated her time and talents to the Rangely Cemetery
District. Millie enjoyed time with her family and friends, reading, watching sports, sewing, fishing and gardening.
Mildred is survived by two daughters; Karen Harper (Gregg) of Loma, Colo., Melissa Strickler (Robert) of Katy, Texas, two sisters; Norma Cuviello (Patrick) of Corsicana, Texas, Jo Sommerville (Tom) of Graham, Texas, six grandchildren; Quentin Harper, Amanda Orr, Austin Harper, Taylor Harper, Tessa Strickler and Maxwell Strickler, three great-grandchildren; Cali Harper, Cheyanne Harper, and Carly Orr. Millie also leaves behind her beloved dog, Andy Busch.

Timothy Leonard Smith

Timothy Leonard Smith, 38, of Sidney, Neb., passed away Dec. 15 at Memorial Health Center in Sidney. Timothy was born April 13, 1965 in Rangely to Leonard William and Doris Mae (Koch) Smith.
Timothy loved music, his family, God, going to church and taking communion, his dog Snuggles and playing ball. He was in the BOCES program in Rangely and worked at the Office of Human Development in Sidney.
Timothy touched people’s lives in many different ways, and will be greatly missed by family and friends. He was preceded in death by brothers, Timothy William and Neal William Smith, father Leonard William Smith, grandparents Vernon and Nina Koch, and Harvey and Mary Smith.
He is survived by his mother, Doris Mae Smith of Boulder and sister Natalie Smith of Corona Del Mar, Calif.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Dec. 18 at 10 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sidney, Neb. with Pastor Bradley Heinecke officiating. Graveside service and burial followed at 2 p.m. in the Haxtun Cemetery, Haxtun Colo. Services were directed by Baucke Funeral Home of Yuma, Colo. Memorial contributions may be made in Timothy’s name and sent to Doris Mae Smith at 4309 Clay Commons Court, Boulder, Colo., 80303.
Elizabeth 'Betty' P. Young

Elizabeth 'Betty' P. Young, 74, of Rangely, died Dec. 19, 2003, in the Long Term Care Unit of the Rangely District Hospital.
Young was born Feb. 8, 1929, in Durango, the daughter of Otto and Pearl (McClendon) Garner. On Nov. 5, 1946, she was united in marriage to Willis Young in Aztec, N.M. The couple resided in Durango where Mrs. Young managed the cafeteria at Durango High School.
Young loved to work in her flowerbeds and was known for her prize-winning roses. In 1994 the Young’s moved to Rangely to be near their daughter and her family.
In addition to her husband, Willis, of the family home, she is survived by her daughter Jackie (George) Fortunato of Rangely, one son, Dennis (Karen) Young of Durango, four grandchildren, Lisa, Brian and Paul Fortunato and Deck Schaline and six great-grandchildren, Jacob, Brendan, Madeline, Corra, Mason and Kayla. She is also survived by one sister, Louise Hankins and one brother Larry Garner, both of Ignacio.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 22 from St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Rangely. Interment was made in the Rangely Cemetery.
Cochran Memorial Chapel was entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
Ellen LeVone Boren Robbins

She was born April 15, 1910, in Vernal to Leonard and Flossie Richins Boren.
She married Floyd J. Robins April 5, 1928, that union was later sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple Sept. 4, 1953. They were married 71 years and received a Commendation from Governor Michael J. Leavitt for their long and faithful marriage and family life.
They had four children Opal Robbins (Jarrell) Massey of Meeker; Veyon Robbins (Vern) Wagner of Hartsel; Floyd Gary (Uldene) Robbins of Delta; Marva Jean Robbins Leatham of Logan, Utah.
Their first home was in Davis Ward. During the depression they moved to Meeker where Floyd worked on the Big Beaver Ranch for W.K. Starbird and later for Dell Owens and Mr. Lockwood. They purchased a ranch up Dry Fork Canyon during WWII, then sold out and moved back to Meeker on the Fred Winslett Ranch. After which they returned to make their home in Vernal until Floyd’s death in 1999.
She lived a good life, and was devoted to her family, husband and her home. She raised a beautiful garden and always had some type of handiwork that she loved to do. She crocheted many afghan’s and embroidered many pillowcase and dresser scarves. She was a good housekeeper and very devoted to her family.
She is survived by 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 36 great great grandchildren.
Funeral Services were held on Dec. 23, 2003, at the Vernal 1st Ward LDS Chapel at 1 p.m. Friends had a viewing on Monday from 6-8 p.m. at Thomson-Blackburn Vernal Mortuary and Tuesday at the church one-hour prior to the services. Burial was in the Vernal Memorial Park under the direction of Thomson-Blackburn Vernal Mortuary.
